  • Characteristics and integration of undrained response of silty soils
  • 1989
  • In: Numerical models in geomechanics. - London : Elsevier. - 1851663460 ; , s. 195-203
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Constitutive behaviour of silt is discussed with emphasis on undrained response. Triaxial undrained tests performed on silt shows contractant behaviour at small strains but dilatant behaviour at higher strains, whereafter the soil fails. A constitutive model for silt based on elastoplacticity is proposed and numerically investigated

  • Eating problems and nutritional status during hospital stay of patients
  • 1989
  • In: Journal of the American Dietetic Association. - 0002-8223 .- 1878-3570. ; 89:6, s. 1092-6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Eating problems and nutritional status were studied in a consecutive series of patients who had had strokes. From this cohort, 32 subjects (mean age 73 years) with a hospital stay of 21 days or more are described. Eating problems were identified by direct participant observations of the patients' eating behavior, interviews on admission, inspections of the mouth, and discussions with the patients. Nutritional status was assessed by weight, triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), arm muscular circumference (AMC), plasma albumin, serum transferrin, and plasma prealbumin on admission and then weekly. Eating problems were identified in 27 patients. In a general linear hypothesis program, poor nutritional status 3 weeks after admission was found to be associated with (in decreasing order) low self-care performance, poor nutritional status on admission, male sex, intravenous energy-containing fluids, advanced age, paresis of the right arm, and eating problems. Factors other than eating problems seem to be important for undernutrition in patients with strokes during hospital stay. AD - Department

  • Direct evidence for the cytomembrane derivation of Birbeck granules: the membrane-sandwich effect
  • 1985
  • In: Acta Dermato-Venereologica. - 1651-2057. ; 65:2, s. 157-160
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Digitonin, which is known to cause extensive damage to cytomembranes in general, was found to have a most remarkable effect on epidermal Langerhans' cells. Thus, it generates a membrane-sandwiching process resulting in the formation of large discs which except for the differences in size have the same morphology as ordinary Birbeck granules. This demonstrates that the cytomembrane of the Langerhans' cell has the inherent ability to superimpose upon itself, leaving little doubt that the normal Birbeck granules derive from the cytomembrane.

  • Immune functions in melanoma patients during treatment with interferon [HuIFN-alpha (Le)] alone or in combination with cimetidine
  • 1985
  • In: Anticancer research. - 0250-7005. ; 5:2, s. 197-204
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • While leukocyte interferon was found therapeutically ineffective in a series of 20 patients with metastatic malignant melanoma, subsequent combination treatment with interferon and cimetidine induced 5 complete and 1 partial tumour remissions. Prior to interferon therapy initiation, regressor patients demonstrated a significantly greater ability to mediate antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity than progressor patients and also tended to have higher natural killer-cell activity. These differences were more pronounced following in vitro exposure of effector cells to interferon alone or in combination with cimetidine. During therapy the differences decreased to statistically nonsignificant levels. The number of immunoglobulin producing cells and lymphocyte proliferative responses to Con A were found to increase in both patient groups after interferon therapy initiation; but this augmentation vanished gradually upon combined treatment with cimetidine. A gradual decrease of the number of T lymphocytes and granulocytes was also recorded. None of the demonstrated alterations in the activities of circulating lymphocytes appears to be a relevant correlate to the efficacy of combined therapy compared to interferon alone.
