    • This theoretical and methodological paper discusses the emerging theoretical framing and methodological considerations in our efforts to develop a theoretical approach supporting instructional design for teaching and learning statistics and mathematical modelling. From an instructional design point of view aligned with the goals in governing curricula documents and real classroom constraints, we argue for the integration of the models and modelling perspective on teaching and learning mathematics with a data-modelling approach to facilitate students’ learning statistics and mathematical modelling. An application of the framework is given and future research discussed.

  • Informell Statistisk Inferens i modelleringssituationer : En studie om utveckling av ett ramverk för att analysera hur elever uttrycker inferenser

    • Syftet med denna studie är att bidra med ökad kunskap om lärande och undervisning i informell statistisk inferens. I studien användes en kvalitativ forskningsstrategi inriktad mot prövning och generering av teorier med inspiration av grounded theory. Studiens kunskapsfokus är riktad mot karakterisering av statistiska processer och begrepp där system av begreppsramverk om informell statistisk inferens och modellering utgör en central del av forskningen. För att erhålla adekvat empiri utformades en undervisningssituation där elever engagerades med att planera och genomföra en undersökning. Studien genomfördes i en normal klassrumssituation där undervisningen inriktades mot ett område inom sannolikhet och statistisk där bland annat lådagram och normalfördelning med tillhörande begrepp introduceras. Det empiriska materialet samlades in genom videoinspelning och skriftliga redovisningar. Materialet analyserades genom ett sammansatt ramverk om informell statistisk inferens och modellering. Resultatet av analysen visar exempel på hur elever kan förväntas uttrycka aspekter av informella statistisk inferens då de genomför statistiska undersökningar. Vidare utvecklades ett ramverk som teoretiskt beskriver informell statistisk inferens i modelleringssituationer. Studien pekar på att ISI-modellering har potential att användas för att analysera hur informell statistisk inferens kan komma till uttryck och att identifiera potentiella inlärningsmöjligheter för studenter att utveckla sin förmåga att uttrycka informella statistisk slutledning och att identifiera potentiella inlärningsmöjligheter för elever att utveckla sin förmåga att uttrycka informella inferenser.

  • Genetic studies of body mass index yield new insights for obesity biology.

    • Obesity is heritable and predisposes to many diseases. To understand the genetic basis of obesity better, here we conduct a genome-wide association study and Metabochip meta-analysis of body mass index (BMI), a measure commonly used to define obesity and assess adiposity, in up to 339,224 individuals. This analysis identifies 97 BMI-associated loci (P < 5 × 10(-8)), 56 of which are novel. Five loci demonstrate clear evidence of several independent association signals, and many loci have significant effects on other metabolic phenotypes. The 97 loci account for ∼2.7% of BMI variation, and genome-wide estimates suggest that common variation accounts for >20% of BMI variation. Pathway analyses provide strong support for a role of the central nervous system in obesity susceptibility and implicate new genes and pathways, including those related to synaptic function, glutamate signalling, insulin secretion/action, energy metabolism, lipid biology and adipogenesis.

Att enbart genom ekonomiska åtgärder höja pensionsåldern är inte långsiktigt hållbart, skriver 54 forskare.DEBATT | PENSIONForskning visar att cirka var fjärde har en diagnos eller skada orsakad av sitt arbete. Detta gör arbetsorsakad sjukdom och skada till ett betydelsefullt folkhälsoproblem. Att då enbart genom ekonomiska åtgärder höja pensionsåldern för samtliga (yrkes)grupper utifrån deras kronologiska ålder är inte långsiktigt hållbart när individers biologiska ålder är så olika bland annat till följd av arbetslivet. Detta är en demokratifråga. Forskning om äldre i arbetslivet och hållbart arbete visar att man då främst flyttar individer från pensionssystemet till sjukförsäkringssystemet och ökar klyftorna i samhället.Debatt Det här är en argumenterande text med syfte att påverka. Åsikterna som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Vi är 54 forskare som nu gemensamt har skrivit denna debattartikel. Anledningen är att vi är oroade över att cirka var fjärde blir sjuk av sitt arbete samtidigt som man i det förslag som ligger om att senarelägga ålderspensionen i princip utgår ifrån att arbetskraftsdeltagande enbart styrs av ekonomin. Vi vill trycka på betydelsen av åtgärder i arbetslivet för att komma tillrätta med ohälsan, det vill säga inte enbart ekonomiska restriktioner som tvingar folk som inte kan, vill och orkar att stanna kvar i arbetslivet till en högre kronologisk ålder.Pensionssystemet bygger på att vi ska arbeta en viss del av våra liv för att förtjäna möjligheter till pension. Vi bör dock inte enbart utgå ifrån antalet år sedan en person föddes, då korttidsutbildade generellt träder in på arbetsmarknaden tidigare än långtidsutbildade. De har alltså varit en del av arbetskraften från en yngre ålder. Människor med kortare utbildning har oftare ett arbete som innebär påfrestningar som kan inverka negativt på hälsotillståndet och som till och med kan påskynda det biologiska åldrandet. Dessutom lever korttidsutbildade generellt sett inte lika länge som långtidsutbildade, vilket delvis även avspeglar skilda livs- och arbetsvillkor.Den svenska sjukförsäkringsreformen 2008 avsåg att få tillbaka människor i arbete. Men studien fann att den faktiskt bidrog till att fler gick i tidig ålderspension av dem som var i åldern 55–64 år. Ökningen var störst bland korttidsutbildade. Mer än 5 procent fler gick i tidig ålderspension då det blev svårare att få sjukpenning och sjukersättning. Vi kan notera att det är vanligare att manliga chefer tar ut tidig ålderspension, jämfört med kvinnliga maskinskötare inom tillverkningsindustrin. I vissa yrken är det dessutom vanligare att människor, trots pension, både orkar och faktiskt ges möjlighet att arbeta vidare om de har en specialkompetens som efterfrågas. Om vi endast kombinerar ekonomiska morötter med piskor finns en stor risk att vi ökar klyftan mellan grupper som både kan och vill fortsätta att yrkesarbeta och personer som av olika skäl inte längre kan eller orkar.Ta nytta av den forskning som vi har tagit fram. Ett hållbart och acceptabelt pensionssystem måste utformas utifrån personliga förutsättningar och förhållanden i arbetslivet. Ett hållbart arbetsliv för allt fler i vår åldrande befolkning fordrar att vi samtidigt beaktar faktorer som relaterar till biologisk/kroppslig ålder, mental/kognitiv ålder samt social ålder/livsloppsfas och våra attityder som är kopplade till ålder. Vi måste ta större hänsyn till olika förutsättningar och varierande funktionsförmåga och utifrån detta anpassa de åtgärder som gör att arbetslivet blir möjligt och hållbart för allt fler även i högre ålder.”Morötter” är viktigare för en god arbetshälsa och hög produktivitet än en piska i form av oron för en dålig ekonomi.Forskning visar att pedagogik som bygger på ”morötter” oftast är betydligt bättre än ”piskor” för att nå framgångsrika och långsiktiga mål. ”Morötter” i samhället, för organisationer, företag och individer är därför viktiga för god arbetshälsa och fortsatt produktivitet och kan bidra till ett längre arbetsliv även för grupper som tidigare inte ens klarat av att arbeta fram till pensionsåldern. Genom forskning inom området har bland annat swage-modellen utarbetats. Detta är ett verktyg som visar på komplexiteten i ett hållbart arbetsliv och tillsammans med systematiskt arbetsmiljöarbete, handlingsplaner och åtgärder syftar till ett mer hållbart arbetsliv. Morötter är enligt forskningen i detta sammanhang åtgärder för en god fysisk och mental arbetsmiljö, avpassad arbetsbelastning, stödjande teknik, att man kan anpassa arbetstakten, alternativa arbetstidsmodeller vid behov. Det är viktigt att man känner sig trygg och förväntas och tillåts vara delaktig, att man blir sedd av chefen och arbetskamraterna. Att de egna arbetsuppgifterna upplevs som meningsfulla och behövda av andra skapar självförverkligande och tillfredsställelse i arbetet. Att man känner att ens arbetsuppgifter och man själv är viktig för organisationen och företaget. Att man trots högre ålder inkluderas i olika nysatsningar och får tillgång till kompetensutveckling och inte blir åsidosatt eller åldersdiskriminerad. Utvärderingar visar att de äldre medarbetarna som fick några av dessa anpassningar och möjligheter var mer effektiva, utvilade, stimulerade när de var på arbetet samtidigt som sjukfrånvaron minskade. Vilket i sin tur bidrar till ett längre arbetsliv för grupper som tidigare inte klarat av att arbeta fram till pensionsåldern. I organisationer som bygger på en deltagar- och lärandekultur rustas de anställda för att klara omställningar, nya arbetsuppgifter och vid behov även yrkesbyten.Med en åldrande befolkning där allt fler lever allt längre behöver vi arbeta till en högre ålder i framtiden för att pensionssystemet ska hålla. Men ”morötter” är viktigare för en god arbetshälsa och hög produktivitet än en piska i form av oron för en dålig ekonomi. Det kräver också att vi ändrar våra attityder och förhållningssätt till äldre på arbetsmarknaden, vilket vi bäst gör genom att organisationer och företag får incitament till och erbjuder mer individanpassade arbetsvillkor, särskilt för personer i högre ålder. Låt oss därför använda den framtagna kunskapen i praktiken för att göra arbetslivet friskt och hållbart för alla åldrar.

Att höja pensionsåldern för alla yrkesgrupper, utan konkreta åtgärder för att minska ohälsan, är därför problematiskt och mycket oroande. Det är, enligt forskarna, inte långsiktigt samhällsekonomiskt lönsamt att utan andra åtgärder höja pensionsåldern för alla. Vi – 54 forskare – är mycket oroade över konsekvenserna av att, som föreslagits, senarelägga ålderspensionen.Förslaget utgår i princip från arbetskraftsdeltagande i princip enbart styrs av ekonomin, medan forskningen visar att det bara är en av flera faktorer som styr hur länge och hur mycket människor väljer att arbeta.Det här sättet att lösa problemet med en åldrande befolkning och ett sviktande pensionssystem är inte samhällsekonomiskt lönsamt på lång sikt, utan riskerar bara att flytta runt folk mellan olika ersättningssystem. Pensionssystemet bygger på att vi ska arbeta en viss del av våra liv för att tjäna in vår pension. Vi bör dock inte enbart utgå ifrån ålder eller antalet år sedan en person föddes då korttidsutbildade generellt träder in på arbetsmarknaden tidigare än långtidsutbildade. Andra aspekter är arbetsinnehåll, hur meningsfulla och stimulerande arbetsuppgifterna är, balansen mellan arbete och familjesituation och fritidsaktiviteter. Organisationskultur, ledarskapet, stöd i arbetet och kompetens har stor betydelse för om vi ska kunna och vilja arbeta till en högre ålder. Vi måste ta större hänsyn till olika förutsättningar och varierande funktionsförmåga och utifrån detta anpassa de åtgärder som gör att arbetslivet blir möjligt och hållbart för allt fler även i högre ålder.Ett hållbart och acceptabelt pensionssystem måste därför utformas utifrån personliga förutsättningar och förhållanden i arbetslivet.   • Epigenetic methylation profiles of CD4 T cell signature loci from patients with urinary bladder cancer

    • Urinary bladder cancer (UBC) is one of the most frequent cancer diseases with 380 000 new cases diagnosed worldwide and about 150 000 deaths yearly. To dissect the role of T helper (Th) cell responses in UBC we investigate the T helper cell subpopulations; Th1, Th2, Th17 and T regulatory cells (Tregs) and their lineage commitment in draining (sentinel) and non-draining lymph nodes and blood from patients subjected to transurethral resection of the bladder (TUR-B) and/or Cystectomy. By analyzing methylation in signature genes IFNG, IL13, IL17a and FOXP3 we measure the epigenetic stability of these T helper cells.In most patients IFNG is more demethylated in sentinel nodes compared to non-sentinel nodes and blood, suggesting a Th1 activation in nodes in contact with the tumor. Aside from that, the distribution of subpopulations in all tissues investigated is highly variable in between patients. All subsets are represented, although there seem to be no or little Th17 cells in nodes. After neoadjuvant treatment (given in between the TUR-B and cystectomy) a temporary increase in methylation of IFNG locus is seen in blood, which could suggest a translocation of activated Th cells from the blood to the tumor area, but also de novo synthesis of Th cells.By analyzing the intra-patient variations in distribution and relative amount of Th cell subpopulations in blood and sentinel nodes we hope to draw conclusions on differences in outcome. The long-term goal is to be able to identify which patients could respond well to immune modulatory treatments.

  • Increased CD4+ T cell lineage commitment determined by CpG methylation correlates with better prognosis in urinary bladder cancer patients

    • BACKGROUND: Urinary bladder cancer is a common malignancy worldwide. Environmental factors and chronic inflammation are correlated with the disease risk. Diagnosis is performed by transurethral resection of the bladder, and patients with muscle invasive disease preferably proceed to radical cystectomy, with or without neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The anti-tumour immune responses, known to be initiated in the tumour and draining lymph nodes, may play a major role in future treatment strategies. Thus, increasing the knowledge of tumour-associated immunological processes is important. Activated CD4+ T cells differentiate into four main separate lineages: Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg, and they are recognized by their effector molecules IFN-γ, IL-13, IL-17A, and the transcription factor Foxp3, respectively. We have previously demonstrated signature CpG sites predictive for lineage commitment of these four major CD4+ T cell lineages. Here, we investigate the lineage commitment specifically in tumour, lymph nodes and blood and relate them to the disease stage and response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.RESULTS: Blood, tumour and regional lymph nodes were obtained from patients at time of transurethral resection of the bladder and at radical cystectomy. Tumour-infiltrating CD4+ lymphocytes were significantly hypomethylated in all four investigated lineage loci compared to CD4+ lymphocytes in lymph nodes and blood (lymph nodes vs tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes: IFNG -4229 bp p < 0.0001, IL13 -11 bp p < 0.05, IL17A -122 bp p < 0.01 and FOXP3 -77 bp p > 0.05). Examination of individual lymph nodes displayed different methylation signatures, suggesting possible correlation with future survival. More advanced post-cystectomy tumour stages correlated significantly with increased methylation at the IFNG -4229 bp locus. Patients with complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy displayed significant hypomethylation in CD4+ T cells for all four investigated loci, most prominently in IFNG p < 0.0001. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy seemed to result in a relocation of Th1-committed CD4+ T cells from blood, presumably to the tumour, indicated by shifts in the methylation patterns, whereas no such shifts were seen for lineages corresponding to IL13, IL17A and FOXP3.CONCLUSION: Increased lineage commitment in CD4+ T cells, as determined by demethylation in predictive CpG sites, is associated with lower post-cystectomy tumour stage, complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and overall better outcome, suggesting epigenetic profiling of CD4+ T cell lineages as a useful readout for clinical staging.

  • A new 3 mm band receiver for the Onsala 20 m antenna

    • A new receiver for the Onsala 20 m antenna with the possibility of being equipped with 3 mm and 4 mm bands has been built and the 3 mm channel has been commissioned during the Spring 2014. For single-dish operation, the receiver uses an innovative on-source/off-source optical switch. In combination with additional optical components and within the same optical layout, the switch provides two calibration loads (for the 3 mm and 4 mm channels), sideband rejection measurement, and tuning possibilities. The optical layout of the receiver employs all cold (4 K) offset elliptical mirrors for both channels, whereas the on-off switch employs flat mirrors only. The 3 mm channel employs a sideband separation (2SB) dual polarization receiver with orthomode transducer (OMT), 4-8 GHz intermediate frequency (IF), x? 2pol x? upper and lower sidebands (USB? +? LSB). The cryostat has four optical windows made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with anti-reflection corrugations, two for the signal and two for each frequency band cold load. The cryostat uses a two-stage cryocooler produced by Sumitomo HI? RDK? 408D2 with anti-vibration suspension of the cold-head to minimize impact of the vibrations on the receiver stability. The local oscillator (LO) system is based on a Gunn oscillator with aphase lock loop (PLL) and four mechanical tuners for broadband operation, providing independently tunable LO power for each polarization. This paper provides a technical description of the receiver and its technology and could be useful for instrumentation engineers and observers using the Onsala 20 m telescope.

  • SEPIA - A new single pixel receiver at the APEX telescope

    • Context. We describe the new Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX (SEPIA) receiver, which was designed and built by the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in collaboration with ESO. It was installed and commissioned at the APEX telescope during 2015 with an ALMA Band 5 receiver channel and updated with a new frequency channel (ALMA Band 9) in February 2016. Aim. This manuscript aims to provide, for observers who use the SEPIA receiver, a reference in terms of the hardware description, optics and performance as well as the commissioning results. Methods. Out of three available receiver cartridge positions in SEPIA, the two current frequency channels, corresponding to ALMA Band 5, the RF band 158-211 GHz, and Band 9, the RF band 600-722 GHz, provide state-of-the-art dual polarization receivers. The Band 5 frequency channel uses 2SB SIS mixers with an average SSB noise temperature around 45 K with IF (intermediate frequency) band 4-8 GHz for each sideband providing total 4 × 4 GHz IF band. The Band 9 frequency channel uses DSB SIS mixers with a noise temperature of 75-125 K with IF band 4-12 GHz for each polarization. Results. Both current SEPIA receiver channels are available to all APEX observers.

  • Bedömningsstöd för familjehemsplacerade barns umgänge : En utvärdering ur socialarbetares perspektiv

    • FoU Södertörn och Södertörns högskola har under år 2017, på uppdrag av Socialstyrelsen, utvärderat ett bedömningsstöd för familjehemsplacerade barns umgänge med föräldrar, andra anhöriga och närstående. Bedömningsstödet har utvecklats av FoU Södertörn i samarbete med barn- och familjehemssekreterare från nio Södertörnskommuner. Stödet utgår från erfarenhetskunskap hos personal inom familjehemsvården. Erfarenheter från placerade barn har också funnits med som en grund genom att organisationen Knas hemma har bidragit med erfarenheter från barn. Forskare i socialt arbete och juridik har lämnat synpunkter som har utvecklat bedömningsstödet.Utvärderingen har genomförts genom att barn- och familjehemssekreterare har prövat att använda bedömningsstödet i ärenden som under en period om sex veckor år 2017 var aktuella för nyplacering, övervägande, omprövning eller umgängesbegränsning. Handläggarnas erfarenheter av att använda bedömningsstödet har inhämtats genom en enkätstudie och genom fokusgruppsintervjuer. 76 personer har deltagit i enkätundersökningen. De har svarat på enkäter efter att ha använt bedömningsstödet vid bedömningar av umgänge för totalt 144 barn. Deltagarna kommer från 27 olika kommunala socialtjänstenheter i landet. 26 personer har deltagit i intervjuer.Resultaten visar att barn- och familjehemssekreterarna upplever ett behov av någon form av stöd i arbetet med att bedöma familjehemsplacerade barns umgänge. Bedömningen av umgänge upplevs som en svår fråga och ett viktigt utvecklingsområde. I enkätstudien har deltagarna fått svara på frågan om de upplever att bedömningsstödet har underlättat deras arbete med att göra en bedömning av umgänget i enlighet med barnets bästa. Resultaten visar att tre av fyra svar är att det stämmer mycket bra eller ganska bra. I en lika stor andel svar har bedömningsstödet bidragit till en mer rättssäker handläggning av umgängesfrågan och varit en hjälp för att samla in information på ett systematiskt sätt. I majoriteten av svaren har bedömningsstödet också bidragit till att barnets inställning till umgänge har blivit belyst.Av intervjuer och kommentarer i enkätstudiens fria svar framkommer att handläggarna anser att bedömningsstödet fungerar särskilt bra i nya ärenden, komplexa ärenden samt när ett ärende har ny handläggare. De tar upp att bedömningsstödet skulle behöva komma in tidigare i processen då det inte endast är relevant för familjehemsenheterna utan även för utredningsenheterna inom den sociala barnavården. I intervjuer beskriver deltagare att handläggare vid utredningsenheter och familjehemsenheter kan ha skilda uppfattningar i umgängesfrågan. När ett ärende kommer till familjehemsenheten har redan handläggare vid utredningsenheten gjort en bedömning av umgänget som handläggare vid familjehemsenheten ibland upplever att det av olika skäl är svårt att genomföra. Bedömningsstödet skulle kunna vara till hjälp i de båda enheternas samverkan med att göra en bedömning av vad som är barnets bästa i umgängesfrågan.I drygt 80 procent av svaren i enkätstudien uppges att handläggaren avser att fortsätta använda bedömningsstödet även efter utvärderingsperioden. I mer än 90 procent av svaren skulle handläggaren rekommendera andra professionella att använda bedömningsstödet.Korstabeller visar att arbetserfarenhet har betydelse för deltagarnas svar. De som har kortare erfarenhet av arbete inom familjehemsvården har genomgående upplevt en större nytta av bedömningsstödet medan de som har längre erfarenhet har gjort det i lägre grad. Några handläggare med lång erfarenhet menar att de redan arbetar på ett rättssäkert sätt och att de följer den systematik som bedömningsstödet utgör. Men det finns även handläggare med lång erfarenhet som har upplevt att bedömningsstödet har varit till hjälp, till exempel genom att vara bekräftande i den meningen att de har kunnat stämma av att de inte har missat väsentliga saker som är relevanta för bedömningen. Barn- och familjehemssekreterare beskriver att bedömningsstödet har bidragit till att de har känt sig mer säkra på sin bedömning, vilket har bidragit till att de också har kunnat vara tydligare i samtal med barn och föräldrar samt i samband med rättsliga processer.

Stödet utgår från erfarenhetskunskap hos personal inom familjehemsvården. Erfarenheter från placerade barn har också funnits med som en grund. Utvärderingen har genomförts av FoU Södertörn och Södertörns högskola på uppdrag av Socialstyrelsen. Utvärderingen bygger på en enkätundersökning och på fokusgruppsintervjuer med barn- och familjehemssekreterare som under en avgränsad period har prövat att använda bedömningsstödet i sitt arbete med att göra bedömningar av barnets bästa i umgängesfrågan.

    • Although the productive fishing grounds had long attracted the Crown and the Church to northern Sweden, it was not until the sixteenth century that the judicial and fiscal powers of the Swedish Crown were exercised in full. Records show that the regular fishing in interior lakes formed a prominent enterprise among coastal farmer communities. This paper examines the social and economic context of farmers engaged in interior fishing with respect to the internal organization of village communities, principles of private and collective ownership, land-use strategies and inter-community relations. There are no a-priori assumptions about the coastal population being “Swedish”. Instead of applying ethnonyms, the terms “farmer” and “coastal” are used throughout the paper. The main area of investigation includes the coastal area of northernmost Sweden and the western parts of Finnish Lapland. The study shows that interior lakes fitted into village resource areas, long sanctioned by usage, and that usufruct belonged to village members collectively. A large part of the fishing lakes are situated in interior Sámi territory. Fishermen were internalizing Sámi place names, implying close relations between the groups. Archeological investigations point to subsistence strategies including systemic interior lake fishing being established before AD 1200. The authors propose that coastal and interior communities should be perceived as two economic strategies representing indigenous and pre-colonial land-use schemes.

    • During the course of the 14th century the Swedish Crown and the Catholic Church made robust attempts to include the areas beside the Bothnian bay within their central fiscal and clerical organization. Salmon fishing in the productive river rapids became major targets for external commercial interests. Written records inform us about the situation from the perspective of the exploiters. However, there is a story running in parallel – that of the local population already occupying the lands and the fishing grounds. The study aims to analyse the significance of hunting and fishing to the overall subsistence of coastal communities in northern Sweden during the period AD 500–1600. The social context is of particular interest, specifically in relation to the successive conformation by the local communities to the Swedish fiscal system. The study draws on archaeological records and on historical records from the 14th to the 17th century, in addition to ethnographic accounts for hunting and fishing. We conclude that the legal cultures embraced by the indigenous population and that of the Swedish central powers were in essence incompatible. The acquisition of land and fishing rights was never settled between two equal parties, but one-sidedly enforced by the party holding the pen.

    • ContextLoss and fragmentation of semi-natural grasslands has critically affected many butterfly species in Europe. Habitat area and isolation can have strong effects on the local biodiversity but species may also be strongly affected by the surrounding matrix.ObjectivesWe explored how different land cover types in the landscape explained the occurrence of butterfly species in semi-natural grasslands.MethodsUsing data from 476 semi-natural grasslands in Sweden, we analysed the effect of matrix composition on species richness and occurrence. Additionally, we analysed at which spatial scales butterflies responded to matrix types (forests, semi-natural grasslands, arable land and water).ResultsForest cover showed the strongest positive effect on species richness, followed by semi-natural grasslands. Forest also had a positive effect on red-listed species at local scales. Responses to matrix composition were highly species-specific. The majority of the 30most common species showed strong positive responses to the amount of forest cover within 200-500m. There was a smaller group of species showing a positive response to arable land cover within 500-2000m. Thirteen species showed positive responses to the amount of semi-natural grasslands, generally at larger scales (10-30km).ConclusionsOur study showed that surrounding forest is beneficial for many grassland butterfly species and that forests might mitigate the negative effects of habitat loss caused by agricultural intensification. Also, semi-natural grasslands were an important factor for species richness at larger spatial scales, indicating that a landscape consisting mainly of supporting habitats (i.e. forests) are insufficient to sustain a rich butterfly fauna.

    • Non-contractible quality dimensions are at risk of degradation when the provision of public services is privatized. However, privatization may increase quality by fostering performance-improving innovation, particularly if combined with increased competition. We assemble a large data set on elderly care services in Sweden between 1990 and 2009 and estimate how opening to private provision affected mortality rates – an important and not easily contractible quality dimension – using a difference-in-difference-in-difference approach. The results indicate that privatization and the associated increase in competition significantly improved non-contractible quality as measured by mortality rates.

  • Tailoring CBT-treatments delivered via the internet : Some examples from a Swedish context

    • Introduction: In mental health comorbidity is common, both physical and psychiatric. Normally studies on cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) protocols do not exclude comorbid patients but leave the comorbidity to improve without being addressed, or remain unchanged without being identified. since most cognitive behavior treatment protocols are diagnosis-specific. Based on the idea that several problems can be targeted at once, individually tailored CBT protocols have developed. Including patients’ specific symptom profile and preferences, and the knowledge from established disorder-specific programs these protocols opens for individualization both before and during treatment based on individual progress. Tailoring can also be done to target different age groups and include for example the interface of the treatment program and the clinical examples used.Methods: Most programs have been tested in randomized controlled trials against active waitlist conditions. Specific symptom measures served as primary outcome measures and measures of life quality as secondary. Some studies also included economic evaluations of cost- effectiveness and ratings of therapeutic alliance. Our samples have been both self-recruited and referred by health care professionals. Most of the studies have measure-points not only directly at post treatment, but also at one- and two-year follow-up.Results: Taken together the tailored programs show, on average, a medium to large effect size (Cohen’s d) on primary outcome measures regarding both anxiety and depressive symptoms, and small effect sizes on life quality measures. Effects were sustained at follow-up. The tailored treatment proved to be cost-effective administered in regular care. We also found patient ratings of therapeutic alliance to correlate with outcome.Discussion: Individually tailored internet-administered CBT show promising results. Based on the available data, it might be a feasible approach in treating anxiety and depression. Acceptability, for whom it is most beneficial, and if some components are more powerful than others, are questions left to be answered.

    • Butterfly conservation in Europe is mainly focused on well-defined grassland habitat patches. Such anapproach ignores the impact of the surrounding landscape, which may contain complementary resourcesand facilitate dispersal. Here, we investigated butterfly species richness and abundance in a habitatnormally regarded as unsuitable matrix: production forestry clear-cuts. Butterflies were recorded in 48clear-cuts in southern Sweden differing with regards to the time since clear-cutting and land-use history(meadow or forest based on historical maps from the 1870s). All clear-cuts had been managed as productionforests for at least 80e120 years. A total of 39 species were found in clear-cuts of both land-usehistories, but clear-cuts with a history as meadow had on average 34% higher species richness and 19%higher abundance than did clear-cuts with a history as forest. No effect of the time since clear-cuttingwas found, irrespective of land-use history, which was likely due to the narrow timespan sampled (<8years). The absence of temporal effect suggests that clear-cuts may provide butterflies with valuableresources for 10e15 years. Assuming a 100 year forest rotational cycle, this means that 10e15% of thetotal forested area are made up by clear-cuts valuable to butterflies, which corresponds to an area aboutfour times as large as that of species-rich semi-natural grasslands. The study illustrates the importance ofconsidering land-use legacies in ecological research and question the landscape-ecological view thatclear-cuts make up an unsuitable matrix for butterflies. Moreover, forest conservation management withspecial attention to land-use history may increase the quality of the landscape, thus facilitating butterflymetapopulation persistence. Given their large area and assets of nectar and host plant resources, clearcutsmust be considered as a butterfly habitat in its own right. Being a man-made environment withshort history, we might call it a neo-habitat.

    • Purpose: To investigate whether neonatal exposure to fractionated external gamma radiation and co-exposure to radiation and nicotine can affect/exacerbate developmental neurotoxic effects, including altered behavior/cognitive function and the susceptibility of the cholinergic system in adult male mice. Materials and methods: Neonatal male Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice were irradiated with one 200 mGy fraction/day and/or exposed to nicotine (66 μg/kg b.w.) twice daily on postnatal day (PND) 10, 10–11, 10–12 or 10–13 (nicotine only). At 2 months of age the animals were tested for spontaneous behavior in a novel home environment, habituation capacity and nicotine-induced behavior. Results: Fractionated irradiation and co-exposure to radiation and nicotine on three consecutive days disrupted behavior and habituation and altered susceptibility of the cholinergic system. All observed effects were significantly more pronounced in mice co-exposed to both radiation and nicotine. Conclusions: The fractionated irradiation regime affects behavior/cognitive function in a similar manner as has previously been observed for single-dose exposures. Neonatal co-exposure to radiation and nicotine, during a critical period of brain development in general and cholinergic system development in particular, enhance these behavioral defects suggesting that the cholinergic system can be a target system for this type of developmental neurotoxic effects.

    • Background: Radiological methods for screening, diagnostics and therapy are frequently used in healthcare. In infants and children, anaesthesia/sedation is often used in these situations to relieve the patients' perception of stress or pain. Both ionising radiation (IR) and ketamine have been shown to induce developmental neurotoxic effects and this study aimed to identify the combined effects of these in a murine model. Methods: Male mice were exposed to a single dose of ketamine (7.5 mg kg(-1) body weight) s.c. on postnatal day 10. One hour after ketamine exposure, mice were whole body irradiated with 50-200 mGy gamma radiation (Cs-137). Behavioural observations were performed at 2, 4 and 5 months of age. At 6 months of age, cerebral cortex and hippocampus tissue were analysed for neuroprotein levels. Results: Animals co-exposed to IR and ketamine displayed significant (P <= 0.01) lack of habituation in the spontaneous behaviour test, when compared with controls and single agent exposed mice. In the Morris Water Maze test, co-exposed animals showed significant (P <= 0.05) impaired learning and memory capacity in both the spatial acquisition task and the relearning test compared with controls and single agent exposed mice. Furthermore, in co-exposed mice a significantly (P <= 0.05) elevated level of tau protein in cerebral cortex was observed. Single agent exposure did not cause any significant effects on the investigated endpoints. Conclusion: Co-exposure to IR and ketamine can aggravate developmental neurotoxic effects at doses where the single agent exposure does not impact on the measured variables. These findings show that estimation of risk after paediatric low-dose IR exposure, based upon radiation dose alone, may underestimate the consequences for this vulnerable population.

    • Synanthedon vespiformis L. (Lepidoptera:Sesiidae) is considered a rare insect in Sweden, discoveredin 1860, with only a few observations recorded until a sexpheromone attractant became available recently. This studydetails a national survey conducted using pheromones as asampling method for this species. Through pheromonetrapping we captured 439 specimens in Southern Sweden at77 sites, almost tripling the number of previously reportedrecords for this species. The results suggest that S. vespiformisis truly a rare species with a genuinely scattereddistribution, but can be locally abundant. Habitat analyseswere conducted in order to test the relationship betweenhabitat quality and the number of individuals caught. InSweden, S. vespiformis is thought to be associated with oakhosts, but our attempts to predict its occurrence by theabundance of oaks yielded no significant relationships. Wetherefore suggest that sampling bias and limited knowledgeon distribution may have led to the assumption that thisspecies is primarily reliant on oaks in the northern part ofits range, whereas it may in fact be polyphagous, similar toS. vespiformis found as an agricultural pest in Central andSouthern Europe. We conclude that pheromones canmassively enhance sampling potential for this and otherrare lepidopteran species. Large-scale pheromone-basedsurveys provide a snapshot of true presences and absencesacross a considerable part of a species national distributionrange, and thus for the first time provide a viable means ofsystematically assessing changes in distribution over timewith high spatiotemporal resolution.

    • Being highly attentive to details can be a positive feature. However, for some individuals, perfectionism can lead to distress and is associated with many psychiatric disorders. Cognitive behavior therapy has been shown to yield many benefits for those experiencing problems with perfectionism, but the access to evidence-based care is limited. The current study investigated the efficacy of guided Internet-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (ICBT) and predictors of treatment outcome. In total, 156 individuals were included and randomized to an eight-week treatment or wait-list control. Self-report measures of perfectionism, depression, anxiety, self-criticism, self-compassion, and quality of life were distributed during screening and at post-treatment. Intention-to-treat were used for all statistical analyses. Moderate to large between-group effect sizes were obtained for the primary outcome measures, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, subscales Concerns over Mistakes and Personal Standards, Cohen’s d = 0.68-1.00, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) [0.36-1.33], with 35 (44.9%) of the patients in treatment being improved. Predictors were also explored, but none were related to treatment outcome. In sum, guided ICBT can be helpful for addressing problems with clinical perfectionism, but research of its long-term benefits is warranted.

    • Many saproxylic species are threatened in Europe because of habitat decline.Hollow trees represent an important habitat for saproxylic species. Artificial habitats mayneed to be created to maintain or increase the amount of habitat due to natural habitat decline.This study investigated the extent to which saproxylic beetles use artificial habitats in woodenboxes. The boxes were placed at various distances (0–1800 m) from known biodiversityhotspots with hollow oaks and studied over 10 years. Boxes were mainly filled with oak sawdust, oak leaves, hay and lucerne flour. In total, 2170 specimens of 91 saproxylic beetlespecies were sampled in 43 boxes. The abundance of species associated with tree hollows,wood rot and animal nests increased from the fourth to the final year, but species richnessdeclined for all groups. This study shows that wooden boxes can function as saproxylicspecies habitats. The artificial habitats developed into a more hollow-like environment duringthe decade long experiment with fewer but more abundant tree hollow specialists.

The groups did not differ in terms of the change in the scores for the primary outcome (p=0.17) of pain-related disability between the experimental group (median: 2.5, Q1-Q3: -2.5-14.25), and the control group (median: 0, Q1-Q3: -5-6). Further, there were also no significant differences found for the secondary outcomes except for sickness-related absence, where the exercise-based physiotherapy group had more days of sickness-related absence three months before treatment (p= 0.02), and at the 10-year follow-up (p=0.03).Discussion: The beneficial effects favouring tailored behavioural medicine treatment that observed post-treatment and at the two-year follow-up were not maintained 10 years after treatment.

    • III-Nitride semiconductors are very promising in both electronics and optical devices. The ability of the III-Nitride semiconductors as light emitters to span the electromagnetic spectrum from deep ultraviolet light, through the entire visible region, and into the infrared part of the spectrum, is a very important feature, making this material very important in the field of light emitting devices. In fact, the blue emission from Indium Gallium Nitride (InGaN), which was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, is the basis of the common and important white light emitting diode (LED).Quantum dots (QDs) have properties that make them very interesting for light emitting devices for a range of different applications, such as the possibility of increasing device efficiency. The spectrally well-defined emission from QDs also allows accurate color reproduction and high-performance communication devices. The small size of QDs, combined with selective area growth allows for an improved display resolution. By control of the polarization direction of QDs, they can be used in more efficient displays as well as in traditional communication devices. The possibility of sending out entangled photon pairs is another QD property of importance for quantum key distribution used for secure communication.QDs can hold different exciton complexes, such as the neutral single exciton, consisting of one electron and one hole, and the biexciton, consisting of two excitons. The integrated PL intensity of the biexciton exhibits a quadratic dependence with respect to the excitation power, as compared to the linear power dependence of the neutral single exciton. The lifetime of the neutral exciton is 880 ps, whereas the biexciton, consisting of twice the number of charge carriers and lacks a dark state, has a considerably shorter lifetime of only 500 ps. The ratio of the lifetimes is an indication that the size of the QD is in the order of the exciton Bohr radius of the InGaN crystal making up these QDs in the InGaN QW.A large part of the studies of this thesis has been focused on InGaN QDs on top of hexagonal Gallium Nitride (GaN) pyramids, selectively grown by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). On top of the GaN pyramids, an InGaN layer and a GaN capping layer were grown. From structural and optical investigations, InGaN QDs have been characterized as growing on (0001) facets on truncated GaN pyramids. These QDs exhibit both narrow photoluminescence linewidths and are linearly polarized in directions following the symmetry of the pyramids.In this work, the neutral single exciton, and the more rare negatively charged exciton, have been investigated. At low excitation power, the integrated intensity of the PL peak of the neutral exciton increases linearly with the excitation power. The negatively charged exciton, on the other hand, exhibits a quadratic power dependence, just like that of the biexciton. Upon increasing the temperature, the power dependence of the negatively charged exciton changes to linear, just like the neutral exciton. This change in power dependence is explained in terms of electrons in potential traps close to the QD escaping by thermal excitation, leading to a surplus of electrons in the vicinity of the QD. Consequently, only a single exciton needs to be created by photoexcitation in order to form a negatively charged exciton, while the extra electron is supplied to the QD by thermal excitation.Upon a close inspection of the PL of the neutral exciton, a splitting of the peak of just below 0.4 meV is revealed. There is an observed competition in the integrated intensity between these two peaks, similar to that between an exciton and a biexciton. The high energy peak of this split exciton emission is explained in terms of a remotely charged exciton. This exciton state consists of a neutral single exciton in the QD with an extra electron or hole in close vicinity of the QD, which screens the built-in field in the QD.The InGaN QDs are very small; estimated to be on the order of the exciton Bohr radius of the InGaN crystal, or even smaller. The lifetimes of the neutral exciton and the negatively charged exciton are approximately 320 ps and 130 ps, respectively. The ratio of the lifetimes supports the claim of the QD size being on the order of the exciton Bohr radius or smaller, as is further supported by power dependence results. Under the assumption of a spherical QD, theoretical calculations predict an emission energy shift of 0.7 meV, for a peak at 3.09 eV, due to the built-in field for a QD with a diameter of 1.3 nm, in agreement with the experimental observations.Studying the InGaN QD PL from neutral and charged excitons at elevated temperatures (4 K to 166 K) has revealed that the QDs are surrounded by potential fluctuations that trap charge carriers with an energy of around 20 meV, to be compared with the exciton trapping energy in the QDs of approximately 50 meV. The confinement of electrons close to the QD is predicted to be smaller than for holes, which accounts for the negative charge of the charged exciton, and for the higher probability of capturing free electrons. We have estimated the lifetimes of free electrons and holes in the GaN barrier to be 45 ps and 60 ps, in consistence with excitons forming quickly in the barrier upon photoexcitation and that free electrons and holes get trapped quickly in local potential traps close to the QDs. This analysis also indicates that there is a probability of 35 % to have an electron in the QD between the photoexcitation pulses, in agreement with a lower than quadratic power dependence of the negatively charged exciton.InN is an attractive material due to its infrared emission, for applications such as light emitters for communication purposes, but it is more difficult to grow with high quality and low doping concentration as compared to GaN. QDs with a higher In-composition or even pure InN is an interesting prospect as being a route towards increased quantum confinement and room temperature device operation. For all optical devices, p-type doping is needed. Even nominally undoped InN samples tend to be heavily n-type doped, causing problems to make pn-junctions as needed for LEDs. In our work, we present Mg-doped p-type InN films, which when further increasing the Mg-concentration revert to n-type conductivity. We have focused on the effect of the Mg-doping on the light emission properties of these films. The low Mg doped InN film is inhomogeneous and is observed to contain areas with n-type conductivity, so called n-type pockets in the otherwise p-type InN film. A higher concentration of Mg results in a higher crystalline quality and the disappearance of the n-type pockets. The high crystalline quality has enabled us to determine the binding energy of the Mg dopants to 64 meV. Upon further increase of the Mg concentration, the film reverts to ntype conductivity. The highly Mg doped sample also exhibits a red-shifted emission with features that are interpreted as originating from Zinc-Blende inclusions in the Wurtzite InN crystal, acting as quantum wells. The Mg doping is an important factor in controlling the conductivity of InN, as well as its light emission properties, and ultimately construct InN-based devices.In summary, in this thesis, both pyramidal InGaN QDs and InGaN QDs in a QW have been investigated. Novel discoveries of exciton complexes in these QD systems have been reported. Knowledge has also been gained about the challenging material InN, including a study of the effect of the Mg-doping concentration on the semiconductor crystalline quality and its light emission properties. The outcome of this thesis enriches the knowledge of the III-Nitride semiconductor community, with the long-term objective to improve the device performance of III-Nitride based light emitting devices.

    • Development of the brain includes periods which can be critical for its normal maturation. The present study investigates specifically vulnerable peri-/postnatal periods in mice which are essential for understanding the etiology behind radiation induced neurotoxicity and functional defects, including evaluation of neurotoxicity between sexes or commonly used laboratory mouse strains following low/moderate doses of ionizing radiation (IR). Male Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice, whole body irradiated to a single 500 mGy IR dose, on postnatal day (PND) 3 or PND 10 showed an altered adult spontaneous behaviour and impaired habituation capacity, whereas irradiation on PND 19 did not have any impact on the studied variables. Both NMRI and C57bl/6 male and female mice showed an altered adult spontaneous behaviour and impaired habituation following a single whole body irradiation of 500 or 1000 mGy, but not after 20 or 100 mGy, on PND 10. The present study shows that exposure to low/moderate doses of IR during critical life stages might be involved in the induction of neurological/neurodegenerative disorder/disease. A specifically vulnerable period for radiation induced neurotoxicity seems to be around PND 3-10 in mice. Further studies are needed to investigate mechanisms involved in induction of developmental neurotoxicity following low dose irradiation.

    • Background: There is an unmet clinical need for better prognostic and diagnostic tools for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods: Human Protein Atlas data resources, including the transcriptomes and proteomes of normal and malignant human tissues, were searched for RCC-specific proteins and cubilin (CUBN) identified as a candidate. Patient tissue representing various cancer types was constructed into a tissue microarray (n = 940) and immunohistochemistry used to investigate the specificity of CUBN expression in RCC as compared to other cancers. Two independent RCC cohorts (n = 181; n = 114) were analyzed to further establish the sensitivity of CUBN as RCC-specific marker and to explore if the fraction of RCCs lacking CUBN expression could predict differences in patient survival. Results: CUBN was identified as highly RCC-specific protein with 58% of all primary RCCs staining positive for CUBN using immunohistochemistry. In venous tumor thrombi and metastatic lesions, the frequency of CUBN expression was increasingly lost. Clear cell RCC (ccRCC) patients with CUBN positive tumors had a significantly better prognosis compared to patients with CUBN negative tumors, independent of T-stage, Fuhrman grade and nodal status (HR 0.382, CI 0.203-0.719, P = 0.003). Conclusions: CUBN expression is highly specific to RCC and loss of the protein is significantly and independently associated with poor prognosis. CUBN expression in ccRCC provides a promising positive prognostic indicator for patients with ccRCC. The high specificity of CUBN expression in RCC also suggests a role as a new diagnostic marker in clinical cancer differential diagnostics to confirm or rule out RCC.

    • Aims. Our aim is to explore the gas dynamics and the accretion process in the early phase of high-mass star formation.Methods. The inward motion of molecular gas in the massive star forming region G34.26+0.15 is investigated by using high-resolution profiles of seven transitions of ammonia at THz frequencies observed with Herschel-HIFI. The shapes and intensities of these lines are interpreted in terms of radiative transfer models of a spherical, collapsing molecular envelope. An accelerated Lambda Iteration (ALI) method is used to compute the models.Results. The seven ammonia lines show mixed absorption and emission with inverse P-Cygni-type profiles that suggest infall onto the central source. A trend toward absorption at increasingly higher velocities for higher excitation transitions is clearly seen in the line profiles. The J=3←2 lines show only very weak emission, so these absorption profiles can be used directly to analyze the inward motion of the gas. This is the first time a multitransitional study of spectrally resolved rotational ammonia lines has been used for this purpose. Broad emission is, in addition, mixed with the absorption in the 1_0−0_0 ortho-NH_3 line, possibly tracing a molecular outflow from the star forming region. The best-fitting ALI model reproduces the continuum fluxes and line profiles, but slightly underpredicts the emission and absorption depth in the ground-state ortho line 1_0−0_0. An ammonia abundance on the order of 10^{−9} relative to H_2 is needed to fit the profiles. The derived ortho-to-para ratio is approximately 0.5 throughout the infalling cloud core similar to recent findings for translucent clouds in sight lines toward W31C and W49N. We find evidence of two gas components moving inwards toward the central region with constant velocities: 2.7 and 5.3 km s^{−1}, relative to the source systemic velocity. Attempts to model the inward motion with a single gas cloud in free-fall collapse did not succeed. The inferred mass accretion rates derived rises from 4.1×10^{−3} to 4.5×10^{−2} M⊙ yr^{−1}, which is sufficient to overcome the expected radiation pressure from G34.26+0.15.

  • APEX Millimeter Observations of Methanol Emission Toward High-mass Star-forming Cores

    • We present 247 GHz molecular line observations of methanol (CH3OH) toward 16 massive star-forming regions using the APEX telescope with an angular resolution of 25 ''. The sample covers a range of evolutionary states, including warm molecular cores (WMCs), hot molecular cores, and ultracompact H II regions. The hot cores, all of which include UC H II regions, show rich molecular line spectra, although the strength of different species and transitions varies from source to source. In contrast, the warm cores do not show significant molecular line emission. Multiple methanol transitions are detected toward nine of the hot cores; eight of these had enough transitions to use the rotation diagram method to estimate rotational temperatures and column densities. The temperatures lie in the range of 104-190 K and column densities from 3 x 10(16) to 7 x 10(18) cm(-2). Using the average methanol line parameters, we estimate virial masses, which fall in the range from 145 to 720 M-circle dot and proved to be significantly higher than the measured gas masses. We discuss possible scenarios to explain the chemical differences between hot cores and WMCs. One of the observed methanol lines, 4(2)-5(1)A(+) at 247.228 GHz, is predicted to show Class II maser emission, similar in intensity to previously reported J(0)-J(-1)E masers at 157 GHz. We did not find any clear evidence for maser emission among the observed sources, however, a weak maser in this line may exist in G345.01+1.79.

Programmet syftar till att ytterligare stärka värdet av pedagogiska meriter och samtidigt bidra till lärosätets fortsatta och fördjupade utveckling av utbildningarna och organisationen. De tydligaste riskerna som har identifierats med befintliga pedagogiska meriteringsmodeller är att de kan skapa ett A- och B-lag (mellan en karriär som forskare och en karriär som lärare). Dessutom är det ofta oklart hur personer som har utnämnts till excellenta lärare ska kunna bidra till organisationens och utbildningens utveckling ur ett kortsiktigt såväl som ett långsiktigt perspektiv. En tydlig svaghet med befintliga pedagogiska meriteringsmodeller är att de inte explicit nog ger emfas till aktivt och relevant utvecklingsarbete, utan fokuserar på egenhändigt skrivna pedagogiska portföljer som sällan är framtidsinriktade. KTH:s högskolepedagogiska excellensprogram siktar på att försöka möta dessa risker och svagheter. KTH har, alltjämt sedan det nationella obligatoriet om 15 hp Högskolepedagogik infördes, kvarhållit detta obligatorium. Stora satsningar har gjorts på den högskolepedagogiska verksamheten. Ett gediget utbud av fortbildningsmöjligheter samt arenor för nätverkande har utvecklats. Samtidigt råder svagheter i systemet gällande prövande och tillvaratagande av pedagogisk skicklighet, och det är tydligt att KTH behöver ytterligare utveckling i området. Författarna menar också att i och med att de utmaningar vi står inför gällande pedagogisk meritering ser relativt lika ut vid landets lärosäten, bör ett stärkt nationellt samarbete och nätverkande inom landets ingenjörsutbildningar främjas inom området. Artikelförfattarna representerar KTH:s övergripande ledning, utbildningsledning samt ledningen för den högskolepedagogiska verksamheten.

    • Systemic autoimmune diseases are characterized by the overexpression of type I IFN stimulated genes, and accumulating evidence indicate a role for type I IFNs in these diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms for this are still poorly understood. To explore the role of type I IFN regulated miRNAs in systemic autoimmune disease, we characterized cellular expression of miRNAs during both acute and chronic type I IFN responses. We identified a Tcell-specific reduction of miR-31-5p levels, both after intramuscular injection of IFN and in patients with Sjogren's syndrome (SjS). To interrogate the role of miR-31-51p in Tcells we transfected human CD4(+) Tcells with a miR-31-5p inhibitor and performed metabolic measurements. This identified an increase in basal levels of glucose metabolism after inhibition of miR-31-5p. Furthermore, treatment with IFN- also increased the basal levels of human CD4(+) T-cell metabolism. In all, our results suggest that reduced levels of miR-31-5p in Tcells of SjS patients support autoimmune T-cell responses during chronic type I IFN exposure.

    • QuestionsCan signs of 19th century grassland management, which can be observed in the flora immediately (2-4yrs) after clear-cutting in boreonemoral Sweden, still remain 4yrs later? Do the effects from the time since clear-cutting differ between forest and grassland plant species? LocationProvince of ostergotland, southern Sweden. MethodsTwelve contemporary clear-cut areas that were once meadows and 12 that were once forests were selected using land-use maps from the 1870s. Grasses and herbaceous plants were surveyed twice, once in 2009 and once in 2013 (2-4 and 6-8yrs after clear-cutting, respectively). Plant presence was recorded within 100 circular sample plots (radius 1m) placed evenly throughout each respective clear-cut area along transects spaced 25-m apart. The number of sample plots in which a species was present was taken as a measure of that species frequency. Random effects meta-analysis, odds ratios and ANCOVA were used to analyse species responses to clear-cutting over time. ResultsA total of 170 plant species were found in the study, of which 33 were classified as grassland indicator species and 31 as plants primarily confined to forests. Clear-cut areas with a history as meadowland had, on average, up to 64% higher total species richness and 110% more grassland indicator species than did clear-cut areas with a history as forest. The time since clear-cutting had no effect on total species richness. However, the odds of finding a grassland indicator species decreased with the time since clear-cutting, whereas the odds of finding a forest species increased. ConclusionsWe concluded that land-use history plays an important role in explaining the flora found in Swedish clear-cuts, and that its effects on species richness remain for a minimum of 8yrs after harvest (conservative estimate). This phenomenon highlights the importance of acknowledging land-use legacies in ecological research and conservation. Future studies should investigate various options for the promotion of grassland plants in clear-cuts with a history of grassland management while also acknowledging the potential conflicts between conservation and production. The results may pertain to other countries with similar land-use histories.

    • The Bergslagen ore province in south central Sweden is one of the most metallogenetically diverse of the classic mining regions in the Fennoscandian shield. Although most prolific with regards to iron and base metal production, Bergslagen was also the first place where hard-rock mining for extraction of rare earth elements (REE) took place, and exploration for them is ongoing. Major deposit types hosting REE minerali-sation are apatite-iron oxide (Kiruna-type) ores, Bastnas type magnetite-skarn mineralisations and rare metal-enriched granitic pegmatites. These deposits represent a variety of geological processes that led to the formation of a diverse suite of REE minerals over a total time span of some 100 M.y., from early orogenic and syn-volcanic intrusive related as well as hydrothermal processes, to late-orogenic intrusive-related ones.

    • We present a review of the properties of Class I methanol masers detected in low-mass star forming regions (LMSFRs). These masers, henceforth called LMMIs, are associated with postshock gas in the lobes of chemically active outflows in LMSFRs NGC1333, NGC2023, HH25, and L1157. LMMIs share the main properties with powerful masers in regions of massive star formation and are a low-luminosity edge of the total Class I maser population. However, the exploration of just these objects may push forward the exploration of Class I masers, since many LMSFRs are located only 200-300 pc from the Sun, making it possible to study associated objects in detail. EVLA observations with a 0.2″ spatial resolution show that the maser images consist of unresolved or barely resolved spots with brightness temperatures up to 5 × 105 K. The results are marginally consistent with the turbulent model of maser emission.

    • 2,2'-Biindolyl has been condensed with aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and products featuring 10-membered rings have been obtained. Thus, benzaldehyde gave compound 24a as the primary product, which readily underwent transannular oxidative coupling to 25a. The structures of both compounds were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The product from 2,2'-biindolyl and formaldehyde under strongly acidic conditions was slightly different leading to compound 11, whose structure also was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In this case, two molecules of 2,2'-biindolyl reacted with six molecules of formaldehyde.

    • This study uses crop stable nitrogen isotope analysis of charred grain to explore manuring practices in arable production at the affluent regional center Uppåkra and a set of smaller surrounding sites, dating to the first millennium AD in southern Sweden. The isotopic analysis focuses on hulled barley, the principle crop in the Scandinavian Iron Age, and the minor crops: bread wheat, emmer wheat, rye and oat, are included to compare manuring practices in cultivation of other crop species during this period. A field experiment was first conducted to establish relationships between manuring and δ15N values in modern grain from known growing conditions. The data formed an interpretive framework to reconstruct past agricultural practices and manuring intensity in the archaeological study area. Our results from the ancient grains have demonstrated that barley from the early phase in the study area (AD 0–200) varies widely in its δ15N values, reflecting mixed manuring regimes. In the following periods (AD 200–1000), isotopic values are relatively high overall, indicating systematic input of manure. In this paper, we explore whether the isotopic data that indicates sustained and high manuring levels could reflect the wealth of Uppåkra and its surrounding areas by showing prosperity also in its agricultural production, since intensive manuring would have required more resource and labor investments. The new crop nitrogen isotopic data shed light on the agricultural practices of a long-lived Iron Age center and its surrounding areas.

    • This paper presents a study of the chronological setting of hearths registered in FMIS (digital register containing records of all known ancient monuments in Sweden) in the provinces of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, Northern Sweden. A total of c. 1500 hearths are known in the area, mainly situated north of the river Skellefteälven. Within a study area of 107 x 94 km, 32 hearths were randomly selected for excavation, each site embracing 1-14 hearths. The sites were scanned using a metal detector and nearly all artifacts found were from the period AD 1600-1900. 14C-datings of charcoal and burned bones corroborated that most hearths were used during this period, with a large number dating to the 19th and 20th centuries. Many hearths contained bones from mature reindeer, indicating that the hearths were related to reindeer herding. We suggest that most hearths are related to nomadic Sami reindeer herders using coastal areas for winter pasture, possibly resulting from the breakdown of the “lappskatteland” (taxation lands) system and an increase in reindeer numbers.

We also examine the dust opacity exponent β for spatial and/or temporal variations. Methods. Using mapping observations of the very dense ρ Oph A core, we examined standard 1D and non-standard 3D methods to analyse data of far-infrared and submillimetre (submm) continuum radiation. The resulting dust surface density distribution can be compared to that of the gas. The latter was derived from the analysis of accompanying molecular line emission, observed with Herschel from space and with APEX from the ground. As a gas tracer we used N2H+, which is believed to be much less sensitive to freeze-out than CO and its isotopologues. Radiative transfer modelling of the N2H+ (J = 3-2) and (J = 6-5) lines with their hyperfine structure explicitly taken into account provides solutions for the spatial distribution of the column density N(H2), hence the surface density distribution of the gas. Results. The gas-to-dust mass ratio is varying across the map, with very low values in the central regions around the core SM 1. The global average, = 88, is not far from the canonical value of 100, however. In ρ Oph A, the exponent β of the power-law description for the dust opacity exhibits a clear dependence on time, with high values of 2 for the envelope-dominated emission in starless Class -1 sources to low values close to 0 for the disk-dominated emission in Class III objects. β assumes intermediate values for evolutionary classes in between. Conclusions. Since β is primarily controlled by grain size, grain growth mostly occurs in circumstellar disks. The spatial segregation of gas and dust, seen in projection toward the core centre, probably implies that, like C18O, also N2H+ is frozen onto the grains.
