  • Entering the Holy Place in Syriac Orthodox Liturgy : A Ritual and Theological Analysis
  • 2021
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Questions concerning sacred spaces and their relationship to ritual is of interest to historians of religion and others as well. How sacred spaces emerge and are constructed and what relationship they have to rituals are some of the areas that are dealt with in this study in relation to Syriac Orthodox liturgy. The purpose of this study is to create a better understanding of how the Sedrō of Entrance has been practiced in earlier periods and architectural contexts and to investigate what role the entrance rite may have had in constructing the sanctuary as sacred space and the worshipping community as church. The Sedrō of Entrance is a prayer employed during the rite of entrance into the altar in Syriac Orthodox Eucharistic liturgy. This study uses ritual theory to frame the rite of entrance and studies the intersection of ritual text, action and place. Two research questions are addressed: a) How is the rite of entrance into the altar, in the Syriac Orthodox liturgy, performed during the 9th-13th centuries? b) How does the rite of entrance construct the sanctuary as sacred space and the worshipping community as church? The study builds on historical material, manuscripts from the 9th to the 13th centuries, architecture, and other historical textual material. The rite of entrance is framed with ritual theory. Theological analysis is also used to support the ritual theory. The themes of the dissertation include, among others, the relationship between ritual process, ritual place, and the ritual body. It also explores the role of language in the ritual process.

  • Religious Change in Northern Europe. : The Case of Sweden
  • 2004
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2004
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2010. - 1
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This is an overview of the relationship between welfare regimes and majority churches in eight selected countries in Europe. It shows that there is a connection between the evolution of the respective welfare regime and the religious organisation prevalent in the country studied. It also shows that a changing role of the welfare state and of religious institutions give religious organisations both an innovative role and a voice in the public debate on solidarity values.

  • En katolsk liturgi för en katolsk kyrka : Yngve Brilioths liturgiska reformsträvanden 1914–1942
  • 2016
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • During the 20th century a wave of liturgical renewal swept through the Churches in the West. Its beginnings are to be found in Rome with Pope Pius X and e.g. in England through the impact of the Oxford Movement from 1833 and onward. This liturgical renewal also reached the far North – Sweden, but much later. When the theologian Yngve Brilioth (1891–1959) was young, the celebration of the Eucharist was infrequent, to say the least, in fact almost eradicated in the life of the Church of Sweden. In this dissertation my aim is to study the interaction between ecclesiology and liturgy expressed in the liturgical reforms Yngve Brilioth advocated. Brilioth, the son in law of Archbishop Nathan Söderblom (1866–1931) stands out in the process of liturgical renewal within the Church of Sweden. In 1919 he went to Oxford, England. His experience of the Church of England was most influential for his liturgical and ecclesiologial development, as expressed in his book Eucharistic Faith and Practice Evangelical and Catholic. When Brilioth came back from England it was with the “vision of the glory of the sacrament” – this vision gave him incentive to work for an ecclesiologically motivated liturgical renewal in the Church of Sweden. At the center of his vision was Christ’s ongoing incarnation within the Church, particularily through the celebration of the Eucharist. Brilioth reckoned that when the mass was celebrated in the Catholic tradition and order, the catholicity of the Church became visible. The result of my study is that Brilioth through his liturgical reforms advocated a Catholic liturgy for a Catholic Church.

  • Feminism och liturgi - en ecklesiologisk studie
  • 2001
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The core of the thesis consists in a collection of liturgies celebrated in Sweden during The Ecumenical Decade Churches in Solidarity with Women 1988-1998, conducted by the World Council of Churches. The liturgies are seen as a Swedish example of what has become known internationally as the feminist liturgical movement. The overarching aim of the thesis is to show how a feminist ecclesiological perspective can be of help to the feminist liturgical movement in handling the dilemmas with which it is confronted in its practice. The discussion is conducted within an overarching interpretive framework of feminist ecclesiology, while the liturgies are analysed from the following perspectives: liturgical tradition, gender theory and ecclesiology. Liturgy, gender and church are themselves treated as interrelated constructions undergoing constant change and adaptation. The basic dilemma confronting the feminist liturgical movement lies in the frequent requirement to choose between a Christian and a feminist identity. The dilemma can only be resolved conclusively through a transformation of both church and society. Feminist liturgies are understood as attempts to handle this dilemma in the short term. To this end a number of different strategies are put to use. The thesis concludes by suggesting that the movement described would benefit from a more explicit self-understanding both as a feminist movement for liturgical renewal, and as church. This kind of ecclesiological framework might mitigate the consequences of choice, consequences which threaten the richness of both feminist and Christian identity.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Readjustment – and then? The Effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Church Services and Parish Life in the Church of SwedenThis article studies the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on church life in Sweden, and especially the liturgical life of Church of Sweden. During the first year of the pandemic (spring 2020 – spring 2021) local services were increasingly replaced by worship in front of the computer screen. Eucharist was celebrated less frequently and church buildings were for extended periods of time closed not only for services, but also for visitors. The article discusses ecclesiological challenges related to two aspects of these changes. The first aspect concerns the exploding amount of locally shaped varieties and types of worship, when parishes were encouraged to celebrate ”in a way that is possible”. The author relates this to a longer development that may be observed since the early 1970:s, and which has been summarized by theologian Marie Rosenius as ”autonomization”. Parishes have gradually become more separated from each other on a horizontal axis, while simultaneously being dissociated from their dioceses vertically. The effects of the pandemic seem to intensify this development, in turn challenging the ecclesiological idea of the Church of Sweden as defined by a liturgy that is recognizable from one week to the next and from one parish to another. This relates to the second aspect studied here, which concerns the tension between embodiment and disembodiment of church life. Digitalization of liturgical life clearly taps into the latter trend, challenging the ecclesiological idea of the local gathering as the primary expression of the church
