  • Governance of and by Philanthropic Foundations
  • 2021
  • In: European Review. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 1062-7987 .- 1474-0575. ; 29:5, s. 672-698
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Philanthropic foundations have become increasingly important in present-day societies. In relation to governance, they represent some specific features. Like corporations, they are subject to regulation, but they differ by having neither owners nor customers. This makes the governance of foundations an important issue for study. At the same time, governance by foundations is likewise of importance. It includes the role of foundations in corporate governance based on their ownership in corporations and their role in resource allocation based on the returns of their assets. Against this background, this article addresses three research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of the governance of foundations? (2) What role do foundations play for corporate governance? (3) What role do foundations play for resource allocation? In order to contribute to answering these questions this article provides an analysis of the first centenary (1917−2017) of a major Swedish philanthropic foundation, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. It is concluded that successful foundation governance is characterized by (1) rule compliance, (2) loyalty to the founders, and (3) legitimacy among prospective grantees. Additional conclusions are that the larger, the more concentrated, and the more long-term the asset portfolio, the more significant will be the role a foundation may play in corporate governance, and the more successful asset management and the more careful project selection, the more significant will be the role a foundation may play in resource allocation. In addition, the article demonstrates the reciprocal relationships between foundations, corporations, and grantees.

  • 2022
  • In: Econ Journal Watch. - : Institute of Spontaneous Order Economics. - 1933-527X. ; 19:2, s. 283-290
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • My commentary on Eva Forslund and Magnus Henrekson (2022) supports and extends their arguments. The issue is the increasing tendency of non-English institutions and individuals to use English in publishing and teaching. I elaborate on a number of problems associated with this development in terms of research problems addressed, student understanding, and collaboration with society.

  • In: Internationalization in Higher Education and Research. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783031473340 ; , s. 203-218
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This is the final concluding chapter in an edited volume on internationalization of higher education and research. The chapter brings together the conclusions from the three earlier sections of the book. As for Perspectives, the chapter elaborates on definitions of internationalisation, role models and the role of rankings. In terms of Obstacles, it points to the significance of language, challenges of mobility and environmental concerns. Regarding Alternative Modes, the chapter discusses internationalisation at home, distance education and bransch campuses. Looking ahead, the chapter points out that internationalization of higher education and research is in flux not least as a result of political changes in the world towards more authoritarian and nationalistic leadership challenging openness and academic freedom.

  • The Future of Universities
  • 2020. - 1
  • In: Missions of Universities. - Cham, Switzerland : Springer Nature. - 9783030418335 ; , s. 193-207
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In discussing the future of universities, the chapter first points to the significance of the historical development portrayed in the early chapters of the book as well as the fact that universities have been extremely resilient over time. For the future, the chapter revisits the challenges discussed in the later chapters and from present-day voices that are expressing concern about the future of universities. Against this background, the chapter returns to the governance model presented in Chapter 1, thereby providing a discussion of future issues in relation to Regulators, Market Actors and Scrutinizers as well as the Institutions themselves. In relation to Regulators, future universities are expected to face increasing efforts of governance in the interest of nations as well as a blurring of the distinction between public and private institutions. There are also reasons to believe that universities will be under increasing competition from various Market Actors, new as well as old ones. In this competition, universities have advantages of age due to longer reputation building. Furthermore, Scrutinizers will play an increasingly significant role for future universities. This in turn is likely to increase the administrative overhead of Institutions as well as their use of intermediaries.

  • The Governance and Missions of Universities
  • 2020. - 1
  • In: Missions of Universities. - Cham, Switzerland : Springer. ; , s. 1-19
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The chapter starts out by pointing out that the university has been a verysuccessful organizational form from the Medieval Italian universities to itspresent-day global diffusion. Yet, there is today a considerabledifferentiation in terms of scale, scope and reputation. For all of them thegovernance by Regulators, Market Actors and Scrutinizers constitutes significantconditions for their operations, which includes two basic missions: the distribution of established knowledge(teaching students and the dissemination to the wider society) and the creationof new knowledge (research). These missions have for a long time beeninternationalized through students going abroad and researchers collaboratingin global networks. In the past decades, this internationalization has becomeincreasingly institutionalized, which is part of a process, in whichuniversities are developing their internal governance systems in order tohandle Regulators, Market Actors and Regulators, thereby creating boundaryspanning units and using intermediaries such as consultants and interestorganizations.

  • The myth of the global market for business education
  • 2023
  • In: Debating the Business School Legitimacy. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783031127243 - 9783031127274 - 9783031127250 ; , s. 167-180
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Business education has long been a very successful segment of higher education; the number of institutions offering such education has multiplied many times over. This has led to efforts by these institutions to differentiate themselves by means of international rankings and accreditations. As a result, it is widely believed that markets for business education are global. This chapter questions this idea by identifying the limits of global labor markets for education. Even in times of strong internationalization, most students—particularly in non-English speaking countries—stay in their home country for both education and work. Therefore, most business schools, taking advantage of internationally developed knowledge, should focus on providing business education that prepares students for successful careers in their home country. They should also prepare their students for a global world by adding to their curricula languages other than English as well as history, literature, and other subjects from the humanities.

  • Tillbakablickar : En ekonomiprofessors erinringar
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
• In: Årsbok 2021. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 9789188763273 ; , s. 103-120
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
Avslutningsvis diskuteras universitetens framtid.

  • Who is to blame? : Evaluations in Academia Spreading through Relationships among Multiple Actor Types
  • 2022
  • In: Social Science Information. - : Sage Publications. - 0539-0184 .- 1461-7412. ; 61:4, s. 439-456
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We draw on a general model of the governance of organizations to analyze the dynamics among various actor types given the present ubiquity of evaluations in and around universities. Regulators demand evaluations to assess the return on taxpayers’ money. Market actors, particularly publishers of academic journals, promote different metrics, including citation scores and impact factors. Scrutinizers, such as media companies, professions, auditors, and nongovernmental organizations, create further evaluations by developing university rankings, accounting systems, and investigative reports. There are also initiatives for evaluations inside universities: vice chancellors, department heads, and other academic leaders launch voluntary internal assessments, and researchers assist regulators, market actors, and scrutinizers throughout their evaluations. We conclude that multiple actors are responsible for the current evaluation regime in academia, and that none of them is responsible alone. Rather, it is in the dynamic relationships among actors at different levels that we find the strongest processes driving a seemingly ever-increasing number of evaluations in contemporary academia.

  • Internationalization in Higher Education and Research : Perspectives, Obstacles, Alternatives
  • 2024. - 1
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This volume is the outcome of an Academia Europaea conference in Uppsala in the spring of 2022. After an introudction by the editor to the topic and the volume, Hans de Wit, Simon Marginson and Ellen Hazelkorn provide perspectives on internationalization. In a second part Ravit Mizrahi-Shtelman and Gili Drori, Marijk van der Wende, Mette Ginnerskov-Dahlberg and Karen Valentin, elaborate on obstacles to internationalization such as language, security concerns, barriers in labour markets and climate effects. In a following third part, Robert J. Coelen; Ashley Gunter, Markus Roos Breines, F. Melis Cin and Purvati Rahuram, and Christine T. Ennew discuss three alternative modes of internationalization: internationalization at home, distance education and branch campuses. A final chapter by the editor draws conclusions from the earlier chapters and provides some thoughts for the future.

  • Missions of Universities : Past, Present, Future
  • 2020. - 1
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This book provides an analysis of university missions over time and space. It starts out by presenting a governance framework focusing on the demands on universities set by regulators, market actors and scrutinizers. It examines organizational structures, population development, the fundamental tasks of universities, and internal governance structures. Next, the book offers a discussion of the idea and role of universities in society, exploring concepts such as autonomy and universality, and the university as a transformative institute. The next four chapters deal with the development of universities from medieval times, through the Renaissance, towards the research universities in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States. The following five chapters analyse recent developments of increasing external demands manifested through evaluations, accreditations and rankings, which in turn have had effects on the organization of universities. Topics discussed include markets, managers, globalization, consumer models and competition. The book concludes by a discussion and analysis of the future challenges of universities.

  • Professional School Obsession : An Enduring Yet Shifting Rhetoric by U.S. Business Schools
  • 2021
  • In: Academy of Management Learning & Education. - : Academy of Management. - 1537-260X .- 1944-9585. ; 20:3, s. 442-458
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Over the past two decades, prompted in part by a series of corporate scandals, different views have been voiced about why US business schools have purportedly lost their original ambition to become professional schools and, thus, making “management” a “true” profession and how it could be restored. This paper puts these debates into a longer-term perspective, by showing that these claims have been present for more than a century. The paper examines the evolving rhetoric of the protagonists and their critics over five periods, each marked by different contexts, which shaped the ambitions of schools of business to be recognized as professional schools. These claims, the paper shows, had a common thread for over one hundred years, which was the recurring reference to other professional schools, namely those of medicine and law, and at times engineering, which had already achieved the coveted status when US business schools first originated. What we ultimately argue is that, given the rhetorical nature of these claims, suggestions that business schools lost their way or ought to return to some idealized past are largely futile. Future discussions should therefore focus on purpose and power rather than profession.
