  • Uppsala Underdogs - A Robot Soccer Project
  • 2006
  • Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe the four-legged soccer team Uppsala Underdogs developed by a group of 4th year computer science students at Uppsala University during the fall of 2004. The project is based on the experience from two similar previous projects. This year the emphasis of the project has been on distribution of data and on support for evaluation and reconfiguration of strategies. To support data distribution, a middleware has been developed, which implements a replication algorithm and provides a clean interface for the other software modules (or behaviors). To enable easy reconfiguration of strategies, an automata-based graphical description language has been developed, which can be compiled into code that uses the database and the lower level modules, such as tactics and positioning, to make decisions and control the robot. In addition, a graphical simulator has been developed in which the strategies can be evaluated.

  • GABA, a natural immunomodulator of T lymphocytes.
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Neuroimmunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-8421 .- 0165-5728. ; 205:1-2, s. 44-50
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main neuroinhibitory transmitter in the brain. Here we show that GABA in the extracellular space may affect the fate of pathogenic T lymphocytes entering the brain. We examined in encephalitogenic T cells if they expressed functional GABA channels that could be activated by the low (nM-1 microM), physiological concentrations of GABA present around neurons in the brain. The cells expressed the alpha1, alpha4, beta2, beta3, gamma1 and delta GABAA channel subunits and formed functional, extrasynaptic-like GABA channels that were activated by 1 microM GABA. 100 nM and higher GABA concentrations decreased T cell proliferation. The results are consistent with GABA being immunomodulatory.

  • The use of structural equation modeling to describe the effect of operator functional state on air-to-air engagement outcomes
  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Computational evidence of the operative usefulness of a new system is crucial in large system development processes concerning billions of euros or dollars. Although it is obvious that the human often is the most important and critical component of many systems, it has often been hard for Human Factors researchers to express human aspects in a computational and strict way. The thesis describes, through data based statistical modeling, how the concepts or constructs of sensor effectiveness, usability of information, mental workload, situation awareness and teamwork relates to each other and to the operative performance in a fourship of fighter pilots. Through the use of structural equation modeling, ad modum LISREL, a statistical model that describes how the operators’ functional state mediates the effects between technical system oriented variables, was developed. The constructs used in the modeling process have received widespread scientific and operational attention. They have also been identified as multi-dimensional. Many different ways of measuring them have been developed in the scientific community, and the thesis focuses on the next step, i.e. how do these higher order constructs relate to each other in something as multi-dimensional as human activity in real situations?A comprehensive human factors related dataset was collected in a large simulation based acquisition study that examined the requirements and properties of aircraft radar systems. The dataset contains 308 simulated engagements with data from four pilots each, i.e. 1232 cases in a database with 24 variables, generated by 37 pilots. The collected data and the resulting models thus summarizes more than 700 hours of experienced pilots’ complex behavior in an operationally valid environment, and in a way that is of theoretical interest as well as of importance in system development processes. The data thus comes from a real world study of complex processes in a dynamic context, although from a simulator. The thesis is a case example of modern ecologically valid experimental psychology. The data collection does not represent a classical experimental setup, but instead demonstrates methodological needs and considerations for human factors practitioners when working in system development studies. The fact that parts of the used data are classified has not affected the models and scientific conclusions, although the practical findings have been partly circumscribed in the presentation. As a result of the statistical modeling effort, a structural equation model of how the chosen constructs relate to each other, and mediate effects between technical measures by a model of the operator, is proposed. Simplicity of the model was the goal, and based on former experiences and findings, a simplex structure was hypothesized. The final model shows that the covariances between the 24 measures can be explained by a quasi-simplex structure of seven factors.

  • Design and Implementation of a Stereoscopic Display in a Lecture-room
  • 2008
  • In: SIGRAD 2008. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. ; , s. 79-80
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes the master thesis project 3DIS4U: Design and implementation of a distributed visualization system with a stereoscopic display carried out at Uppsala University. The main contributions of the thesis are the installation and evaluation of a wallsized stereoscopic display in a class room-like environment and improvement of the quality, interactivity and usability of visualizations at Uppsala University by connecting the system to one of UPPMAX high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. The project involved modifications to open source softwares, mainly the Visualization ToolKit (VTK) and ParaView. Furthermore, software was developed to aid users in creating interactive stereoscopic simulations. Software was installed and modified for better usability. The option of using HPC resources for larger interactive visualizations also exists. As a final step, evaluations of the display and of the software were carried out together with background research on distributed rendering techniques to be able to produce a proposal for further development of the project. The result of this work is a class room environment which in a few minutes can be turned into a visualization studio with a stereoscopic Linköpings universitetdisplay with the ability to create interactive visualizations. The lecture room retains its function as a class room and can support up to 30 simultaneous viewers.

  • Demand chain management : a Swedish industrial case study
  • 2009
  • In: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 109:8-9, s. 1179-1196
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of demand chain management (DCM) by investigating how it has been structured and executed in an international manufacturing company. Design/methodology/approach - The main emphasis has been on producing descriptive results and the applied research strategy has been an embedded single case study. The case organization originates from Sweden, but it has significant international presence. Empirical data have been collected mainly from in-depth interviews with key persons representing senior management in the case company.Findings - This research shows that DCM is about developing synergies between the demand creation and the demand fulfillment processes. A completely implemented DCM approach should incorporate all the major demand creation and fulfillment processes. This kind of fully implemented approach probably does not exist in real life today but some companies have started to develop versions including some of the major processes, and this research provides an example of this. The ultimate goal of DCM is to gain competitive advantages by differentiating not only the products, but also the delivery process. This is necessary in markets characterized of intensive competition, high product variety, large amount of customer-adapted products, and short product life cycles. It can be concluded that DCM is not another name for demand driven supply chains (SCs) or a fad. It is rather a way to finally benefit from decade long marketing discussions on how to achieve customer focus. It highlights the interplay between marketing and supply chain management (SCM) as an enabler of value creation.Research limitations/implications - This research work is limited to one Swedish company; however the case company has large international presence and is in top three in their industry measured by sales, which provides some ground for the generalization of the research. Practical implications - This paper gives an insight for managers and practitioners to the value of coordinating marketing and SCM to develop a truly customer-driven organization and SC. Originality/value - Several studies have addressed the synergies between marketing and SCM but failed to address how to in some detail realize this in practice. This paper contributes by discussing how to realize this coordination in practice.

  • Prosopopeia: Experiences from a Pervasive Larp
  • 2006. - 1
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Live action role playing, Larp, is a play genre that so far has received little attention from the game studies community. However, the Live action role playing community is perhaps the most interesting role play community of all in its intense focus on role-taking, improvisation, and immersion. Furthermore, Larping has been extensively used for serious purposes, both for crisis training and psychological treatment. In this paper, we focus on Pervasive Larp, Larp events that are staged in the real world and where both the people and the objects of the real world have a direct role in the game. This is a relatively novel variant of Larping, which poses higher demands on technology support than traditional Larps. We report on the experiences from designing and staging Prosopopeia, a pervasive Larp event based on an alternate reality aesthetics. In this game, every design choice was informed by the wish to keep the game as close to reality as possible. We conclude that the approach is indeed both possible and promising, and identify some suggestions for improvements.

  • Expanding the operating space of ICRF on JET with a view to ITER
  • 2006
  • In: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 46:2, s. 391-400
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper reports on ITER-relevant ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) physics investigated on JET in 2003 and early 2004. Minority heating of helium three in hydrogen plasmas-(He-3)H-was systematically explored by varying the 3 He concentration and the toroidal phasing of the antenna arrays. The best heating performance (a maximum electron temperature of 6.2 keV with 5 MW of ICRF power) was obtained with a preferential wave launch in the direction of the plasma current. A clear experimental demonstration was made of the sharp and reproducible transition to the mode conversion heating regime when the 3 He concentration increased above similar to 2%. In the latter regime the best heating performance (a maximum electron temperature of 8 keV with 5 MW of ICRF power) was achieved with dipole array phasing, i.e. a symmetric antenna power spectrum. Minority heating of deuterium in hydrogen plasmas-(D)H-was also investigated but was found inaccessible because this scenario is too sensitive to impurity ions with Z/A = 1/2 such as C6+, small amounts of which directly lead into the mode conversion regime. Minority heating of up to 3% of tritium in deuterium plasmas was systematically investigated during the JET trace tritium experimental campaign (TTE). This required operating JET at its highest possible magnetic field (3.9 to 4 T) and the ICRF system at its lowest frequency (23 MHz). The interest of this scenario for ICRF heating at these low concentrations and its efficiency at boosting the suprathermal neutron yield were confirmed, and the measured neutron and gammay ray spectra permit interesting comparisons with advanced ICRF code simulations. Investigations of finite Larmor radius effects on the RF-induced high-energy tails during second harmonic (omega = 2 omega(c)) heating of a hydrogen minority in D plasmas clearly demonstrated a strong decrease in the RF diffusion coefficient at proton energies similar to 1 MeV in agreement with theoretical expectations. Fast wave heating and current drive experiments in deuterium plasmas showed effective direct electron heating with dipole phasing of the antennas, but only small changes of the central plasma current density were observed with the directive phasings, in particular at low single pass damping. New investigations of the heating efficiency of ICRF antennas confirmed its strong dependence on the parallel wavenumber spectrum. Advances in topics of a more technological nature are also summarized: ELM studies using fast RF measurements, the successful experimental demonstration of a new ELM-tolerant antenna matching scheme and technical enhancements planned on the JET ICRF system for 2006, they being equally strongly driven by the preparation for ITER.

  • Interactive visualization of new electromagnetic quantities
  • 2008
  • In: SIGRAD 2008. - : Linköping University Electronic press. ; , s. 71-74
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent development in classical electrodynamics has demonstratedthe usefulness of different rotational and topological modes in theelectromagnetic fields (angular momentum, polarization, vorticityetc.). Unfortunately, the visualization tools available to illustratethese electrodynamic quantities have hitherto been inadequate. Therefore we have developed a VTK and Python based interactivevisualization tool, with working name EMVT (ElectroMagnetic VisualizationTool), targeted at visualizing precisely these modes. In the near future, EMVT will be further developed to visualize andcontrol live antenna systems, where electromagnetic field data isinstantly received, calculated, and visualized from an antenna or asystem of antennas. It will then be possible to see how the antennaproperties change through direct user interaction in real time.

  • Militärstatens arvegods : Officerstjänstens socialreproduktiva funktion i Sverige och Danmark, ca 1720-1800
  • 2007
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • A new type of state emerged in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Such states, used the bulk of tax revenues for warfare or preparations for war, with Sweden and Denmark being particularly heavily armed. Officers and officials stood at the center of this system. Beginning in the mid-eighteenth century, however, European economies were gradually transformed into a capitalist social order. A starting point for the present discussion is that this economic dynamic affected the manner in which this redistribution system functioned and thus the social conditions for the officials. The question addressed in this dissertation concerns how the role of officers functioned as a means for securing a position within the upper strata in Sweden and Denmark-Norway during the period 1720–1800.One central meaning of officer service was the transfer of hierarchical positions between generations, whereby the officer corps could socially assert themselves through their military ranks. Rank mirrored the conditions of wealth, and the order of ranks was an expression of officers' positions within a well-to-do social group. These positions could lead to advantageous marriages that transferred economic resources through, for example, dowries. Military units stationed in the countryside were usually composed of a number of locally influential families. The economic significance of military service initially complemented income from landed property. But the price of an officer's position increased in Sweden during the second half of the century, with ever greater private wealth being needed to pursue a military career. Consequently, the economic advantages of officer service steadily diminished. Rather than describe military service as a profession, the metaphor of a neighborhood gentlemen's club better expresses the social logic that came to characterize the officer corps.
