  • Skyddandets förnuft : en studie om anhöriga till hjälpbehövande äldre som invandrat sent i livet
  • 2004
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to examine and deepen the knowledge of family member caregiving where the care recipient is an elderly person who immigrated late in life. It also aims to contribute to the knowledge of the complexities underlying informal care giving and add to our understandings of what it means to be an immigrant in Sweden. The caregiver is in focus. The research conducted is explorative and partly inductive. The main material used is a qualitative interview study carried out with family members from different countries who are providing informal care to elderly immigrant relatives. The analysis gives three patterns of caregiving. One shows help from informal caregivers only who are not compensated economically. Another shows help from family members who are compensated. The third shows help from family members and staff from the public care system. Three ideal-typical informal caregiver roles show different positions vis-à-vis the new: “guardian”, “filter” and “reinterpreter of traditional care ideals”. Swedish born and immigrated informal caregivers are also compared through analysis of data gathered in telephone interviews with a representative selection of inhabitants in the County of Stockholm.A philosophy of action together with theory on integration and multiculturalism serves as theoretical frameworks to understand discrepancies and ambiguities in the data. Young immigrants experience different integration processes than do the older ones. They strive to protect older family members from changes linked to the migration experience. Talk about dependence on culture underlines family feelings and legitimates the processes of protection. Preconceptions about great differences between Swedish born and immigrant families are not supported by quantitative data. A conclusion is that protection can be understood in relation both to the traditional and the new, the latter in the forms of meetings with Swedish society where unequal relations prevail. It is a kind of counter-strategy where the range of actions is diminished, and thus it has its own logic. Protection can be loosened up when the circumstances change and the range of actions grow.

  • Cerebrovascular effects of the TRH analogues pGlu-3-methyl-His-Pro amide and pGlu-Glu-Pro amide : a comparison with TRH.
  • 2000
  • In: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences. - : Upsala Medical Society. - 0300-9734 .- 2000-1967. ; 105:1, s. 73-83
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The goal of the study was to assess whether TRH analogues possess cerebrovascular effects similar to the native peptide. The neuropeptide thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) elicits cerebrovasodilation in several species under various conditions. The laser-Doppler method was employed to study the effects of TRH and the analogues pGlu-3-methyl-His-Pro amid (M-TRH) and pGlu-Glu-Pro amide. Intravenous (i.v.) injection of 300 microg kg(-1) of TRH elicited cerebrovasodilation and a 62% increase in blood flow within 1 minute. M-TRH, in a dose of 300 microg kg(-1) i.v., elicited a 80% increase in cerebral blood flow. Even a minute dose of M-TRH (625 ng kg(-1)) caused an increase in cerebral blood flow. No clear difference in effects on the cerebral blood flow was observed between spontaneously and mechanically ventilated animals, pGlu-Glu-Pro amide had no cerebrovascular effect.

  • Rektorsrollen : om skolledarskapets gestaltning
  • 2000
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The role of principals in public education in Sweden has during the last decade been subjected to a number of reforms and structural changes that is without parallel in modern history. For example, the number of principals has doubled, the turnover is considerable and, while in the past being a principal has been an occupation for men, now women are in the majority. The limited Swedish research that has been carried out indicates that principals have multidimensional tasks that are often contradictory. In addition, principals find themselves in a situation where administration dominates at the cost of a more curriculum-based leadership. A majority of these research studies employ a macro-perspective that tends to marginalise the intentions of the actors and the impact of education as a socially-constructed sensemaking process. This thesis examines the role of the principal. The theoretical framework employed in this study derives from social psychology. Within this framework the role of the principal is perceived to be constructed in the intersection of the different domains of public education. This role is then related to the notion of a public ethos based on sets of democratic values. The empirical basis of the investigation is a case study of all principals and their superintendent (director of education) in a smaller Swedish municipality. Data was gathered in a number of interviews that extended over a school-year. The results, in short, suggest that the role of principals is being redefined and can in this process be interpreted with different emphases, that the different domains interpret the role of the principal from different rationalities and that goal-steering and related issues get treated more or less as symbolic rituals. These results are then discussed from the point of different discourses and sensemaking processes in education. It is concluded that the role of the principal is constructed in a discursive intersection. This discussion is then contrasted with a view where principals' emotional labour is highlighted and related to the primary processes of schooling and the societal functions of education.

  • Spelar ideella och informella insatser någon roll för svensk välfärd?
  • 2001
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • The Voluntary Sector in a Social Democratic Welfare State – The Case of Sweden
  • 2003
  • In: Journal of Social Policy. - Sköndal : Ersta Sköndal högskola, Sköndalsinstitutet. - 0047-2794 .- 1469-7823. ; 32:2, s. 217-238
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of the paper is to capture a few vital features of the Swedish voluntary sector and to place them in an international perspective. The size and composition of the Swedish voluntary sector are discussed against the background of dominating theories in voluntary sector research. Special attention is also given to the role of the sector in the field of social welfare. The authors present results from comparative research projects on the voluntary sector carried out in the latter part of the 1990s. It is shown that the size of the Swedish sector is as large as in other industrialised countries, although the composition and the form of the sector differs when compared to many other countries. In weighing the importance of the sector, the authors point out that voluntary organizations make a crucial contribution in certain areas and combining work for interest and values with contributions for members and others. The characteristics of voluntary organizations and new trends within the field of social welfare are presented with the help of three ideal types. Finally, the authors discuss some conceivable scenarios for the future of the Swedish voluntary sector.

  • A3 -- a novel colon and pancreatic cancer reactive antibody from a primate phage library selected using intact tumour cells
  • 2000
  • In: International Journal of Cancer. - 0020-7136. ; 87:4, s. 559-568
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The identification of novel tumour-associated antigens (TAAs) is pivotal for progression in the fields of tumour immunotherapy and diagnosis. In the present study, we have developed, based on flow cytometric evaluation and use of a mini-library composed of specific antibody clones linked to different antibiotic resistance markers, methods for positive and subtractive selection of phage antibodies employing intact cells as the antigen source. An scFv phage library (2.7 x 10(7)) was constructed from a primate (Macaca fascicularis) immunised with pooled human colon carcinomas. This library was selected for 3 rounds by binding to Colo 205 colon adenocarcinoma cells and proteolytic elution followed by phage amplification. Several antibodies reactive with colon carcinomas and with restricted reactivity to a few epithelial normal tissues were identified by immunohistochemistry. One clone, A3 scFv, recognised an epitope that was homogeneously expressed in 11/11 of colon and 4/4 pancreatic carcinomas studied and in normal tissue restricted to subtypes of epithelia in the gastrointestinal tract. The A3 scFv had an apparent overall affinity approximately 100-fold higher than an A3 Fab, suggesting binding of scFv homodimers. The cell surface density of the A3 epitope, calculated on the basis of Fab binding, was exceptionally high, approaching 3 million per cell. We also demonstrate efficient T-cell-mediated killing of colon cancer cells coated with A3 scFv fused to the low MHC class II binding superantigen mutant SEA(D227A). The identified A3 molecule thus represents a TAA with properties that suggest its use for immunotherapy of colon and pancreatic cancer.

  • Interface structure of hydride vapor phase epitaxial GaN grown with high-temperature reactively sputtered AlN buffer
  • 2000
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 76:14, s. 1860-1862
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Thick hydride vapor phase epitaxy GaN layers have been grown on a-plane sapphire using high-temperature ion-assisted reactively sputtered AlN as a buffer layer. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were carried out to study the formation of the two interfaces sapphire/AlN and AlN/GaN, and their influence on the microstructure of both the buffer layer and the main GaN layer. It was demonstrated that the high-temperature reactively sputtered buffer layer provides a good alternative for hydride vapor phase epitaxy growth of GaN layers. In particular, the buffer promotes a specific interface ordering mechanism different from that observed on low-temperature buffers. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)00314-4].
