    • gamma-spectroscopy methods have been used to search for microsecond isomers among the fragmentation products of a 1 GeV/nucleon Pb-208 beam. In particular the population of the known K-pi = 35/2(-) isomer in W-179 has been investigated and several new isomeric decays have been found for neutron rich nuclei in the A approximate to 180-200 mass region. The ground state band of the neutron rich N = 116 system of W-190 has been identified for the first time and we discuss its structure in comparison to neighboring systems.

    • The neutron-rich isotope Sb-136 has been produced following the relativistic projectile fission of U-238 in an experiment performed at the Fragment Separator at GSI, Darmstadt. Delayed gamma -ray spectroscopy of the fission products has been performed after isotope separation. A new isomeric state in Sb-136 has been populated, and its lifetime measured as T-1/2 = 565(50) ns. Realistic and empirical shell-model calculations have been performed and are compared to the experimental observables.

    • The He-8 + Pb-208 reaction was studied in the first experiment with the EXOGAM germanium detector array using beam delivered by the SPIRAL facility. gamma-rays from direct and fusion-evaporation reactions were observed with high resolution. gamma-gamma coincidence data were obtained at a beam intensity level of 105 8He particles per second. Specially designed absorbers and beam detectors could further reduce the background radiation by orders of magnitude.

    • The decays of the very neutron rich Sn isotopes Sn135-137 were studied at CERN/ISOLDE using isotopic and isobaric selectivity achieved by the use of a resonance ionization laser ion source and mass spectroscopy, respectively. Neutron decay rates, gamma-ray singles, and gamma-gamma coincidence data were collected as a function of time. The half-life (T-1/2) and delayed neutron emission probability (P-n) values of 135 Sn were measured to be 530(20) ms and 21(3)%, respectively. For Sn-136, a T-1/2 of 250(30) ms was determined along with a P-n value of 30(5)%. For Sn-137, a T-1/2 of 190(60) ms and a P-n value of 58(15)% were deduced. Identification of low-energy transitions in Sb-135 was made possible by comparison of laser-on and laser-off gamma-ray spectra. Those data combined with gamma-gamma coincidence spectra were used to construct a level scheme for Sb-135 that includes an unexpectedly low first excited state at 282 keV. A ground state beta branch of 33.2% was measured by following the growth and decay of the Sb-135 daughter. Shell-model calculations are consistent with the observed Sb-135 level structure and can account for a lowered first excited state.

  • Ionization energy studies for ozone and OClO monomers and dimers

    • Electron impact ionization cross sections measured close to threshold are reported for both the monomers and dimers of ozone and OClO using a new high resolution electron impact apparatus. The present appearance energies AE(O-3(+)/O-3)=12.70 +/-0.02 eV, AE (OClO+/OClO)=10.55 +/-0.02 and AE(ClO+/OClO=13.37 +/-0.03 eV derived from the measured ionization cross sections are in excellent agreement with the vertical threshold values determined for these ions by high resolution PES and PIMS photoionization studies. The corresponding appearance energies determined for the dimer ions, 10.10 +/-0.3 eV for (O-3)(2)(+) and 9.87 +/-0.2 eV for (OClO)(2)(+), are both red shifted with respect to the monomer case. The bond energy (0.70-0.3+0.5) eV of (OClO)(2)(+) estimated from these data is similar to that of other dimer ions, whereas the bond energy of (O-3-O-3(+)) with (2.55-0.4+0.6) eV is rather large suggesting an unusual structure for the cationic ozone dimer ion. Based on quantum chemical calculations on various levels we are led to the conclusion that the ion produced by ionization of the ozone dimer is no longer a conventional dimer ion where the two monomer units are still present (as is the case for the OClO system), but rather an ion of form O-2.O-4(+) or a twisted ring structure of (O-6)(+).

    • The use of a resonance ionization laser ion source at CERN/ISOLDE has made it possible to study the decay of very neutron-rich Sn135-137. The decay of Sn-135 is found to populate low-energy levels in Sb-135 via direct beta decay and the first excited state in Sb-134 by beta-delayed neutron emission. The level structure of Sb-135 Will be discussed and a possible signature for a more diffuse nuclear surface considered.
