  • Study of drip line nuclei through two-step fragmentation
  • 2004
  • In: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 20:1, s. 95-96
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We have studied the structure of light neutron-rich nuclei around N = 16 by employing the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique using the fragmentation of secondary beams of Ne-25,Ne-26, Na-27,Na-28 and Mg-29,Mg-30 isotopes. This secondary-beam cocktail was obtained by the fragmentation of a 36 S beam at 77.5 MeV.A by the SISSI/GANIL facility. By a second-step fragmentation, we have measured gamma-ray-residue coincidences in C17-20 and O-23,O-24 and described the obtained levels in the framework of the shell model.

  • Study of neutron rich carbon and oxygen nuclei up to drip line
  • 2004
  • In: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 746, s. 135C-139C
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of radioactive beams have been performed in order to study the structure of excited states in neutron rich oxygen and carbon isotopes. For the produced fragments, gamma-ray energies, intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences have been measured. The experiment was performed at GANIL. New gamma-lines have been identified and placed in level schemes for C17-20. The non observation of any gamma-ray in O-23,O-24 suggests that their first excited states lie above the neutron threshold. These results are discussed in the framework of shell model calculations.

  • Development of magnetic rotation in light Gd nuclei; study of Gd-142
  • 2002
  • In: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 13:3, s. 297-305
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-spin states in Gd-142 have been populated by means of the Ru-99(Ti-48, 2p3n) reaction at 2-10 MeV and investigated with the gamma-spectrometer EUROBALL III and the charged-particle detector array ISIS. The features of four dipole bands have been determined and compared with tilted-axis cranking model calculations indicating that they are magnetic rotational bands. A transition from regular to irregular bands has been found approaching N = 82 demonstrating that this is a general phenomenon in nuclei near a double-shell closure.

  • A New us Isomer in 136Sb Produced in the Projectile Fission of 238U
  • 2001
  • In: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - 1434-6001. ; 11, s. 9-13
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The neutron-rich isotope Sb-136 has been produced following the relativistic projectile fission of U-238 in an experiment performed at the Fragment Separator at GSI, Darmstadt. Delayed gamma -ray spectroscopy of the fission products has been performed after isotope separation. A new isomeric state in Sb-136 has been populated, and its lifetime measured as T-1/2 = 565(50) ns. Realistic and empirical shell-model calculations have been performed and are compared to the experimental observables.

  • gamma-ray spectroscopy with a He-8 beam
  • 2003
  • In: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 511:3, s. 354-359
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The He-8 + Pb-208 reaction was studied in the first experiment with the EXOGAM germanium detector array using beam delivered by the SPIRAL facility. gamma-rays from direct and fusion-evaporation reactions were observed with high resolution. gamma-gamma coincidence data were obtained at a beam intensity level of 105 8He particles per second. Specially designed absorbers and beam detectors could further reduce the background radiation by orders of magnitude.

  • Angular Momentum Population in the Projectile Fragmentation of 238U at 750 MeV/nucleon
  • 2004
  • In: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 69:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A systematic study of the population probabilities of nanosecond and microsecond isomers produced following the projectile fragmentation of U-238 at 750 MeV/nucleon has been undertaken at the SIS/FRS facility at GSI. Approximately 15 isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei around A similar to 190 were identified and the corresponding. isomeric ratios determined. The results are compared with a model based on the statistical abrasion-ablation description of relativistic fragmentation and simple assumptions concerning gamma cascades in the final nucleus (sharp cutoff). This model represents an upper limit for the population of isomeric states in relativistic projectile fragmentation. When the decay properties of the states above the isomer are taken into account, as opposed to the sharp cutoff approximation, a good agreement between the experimental and calculated angular momentum population is obtained.

  • Isomeric decays in neutron-rich W, Os and Pt nuclei
  • 2002
  • In: Progress of Theoretical Physics. Supplement. - 0375-9687. ; :146, s. 467-472
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Relativistic energy fragmentation of a 1 GeV/nucleon Pb-208 beam was used to populate a wide range of nuclei on both sides of the valley of beta-stability. The structure of these nuclei was studied by the identification of discrete gamma-ray transitions depopulating isomeric states with lifetimes in the nano- to millisecond range. Highlights of the experiment include the first observation of gamma-ray transitions in the neutron-rich nuclei (188)TA, W-190, Re-192, Os-195, Ir-197,Ir-198, Pt-201,Pt-202. The yrast states in W-190 and Pt-202 as well as the decay out from 10-20 ns isomers in Pt-202,Pt-201 and Os-195 are discussed. The observation of the previously reported isomeric K = 35/2 states in Hf-175, W-179 and Re-181 represents the highest discrete spin states observed to date following a projectile fragmentation reaction.

  • Gamma-decay Lifetime Measurements in the Second Minimum of 58Cu
  • 2001
  • In: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 63:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The individual lifetimes of three low-lying states in the proton-decaying well-deformed rotational band in the second minimum of the N = Z nucleus Cu-58 were determined. Doppler-shift attenuated gamma -ray lineshapes were analyzed following the fusion-evaporation reaction C-40,(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n)Cu-58 and using the EUROBALL gamma -ray spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector systems. The deduced transitional quadrupole moments confirm the predicted increase of deformation towards the bottom of the band. The gamma decay-out strength hints towards a nonstatistical pattern.

  • 2001
  • In: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 694, s. 132-146
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Energy correlations between gamma -ray transitions and the prompt proton decay line in Cu-58 were studied by means of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-40(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n) using the EUROBALL spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector devices. A lifetime of 0.06 < tau < 0.58 ps for the 8915 keV proton-decaying state in Cu-58 is deduced. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    • gamma-spectroscopy methods have been used to search for microsecond isomers among the fragmentation products of a 1 GeV/nucleon Pb-208 beam. In particular the population of the known K-pi = 35/2(-) isomer in W-179 has been investigated and several new isomeric decays have been found for neutron rich nuclei in the A approximate to 180-200 mass region. The ground state band of the neutron rich N = 116 system of W-190 has been identified for the first time and we discuss its structure in comparison to neighboring systems.
