  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Anders Ekström and Sverker Sörlin take an active part in critical debates of humanities in and for society. University policies in the last decades have primarily aimed at the research component, to trigger excellence and international visibility, whereas education and collaboration have played a secondary role, often disconnected from the excellence surge in research policies. The British RAE/REF systems are cases in point, but similar tendencies are visible throughout the world. The authors analyze the concept of "integrative environments" where education, research and collaboration are vitally interconnected - either orchestrated by universities or as spontaneous outcomes from below. It critically examines how such integrative environments have been set up in different university settings, and particularly point to the promising route of conjoining different intellectual backgrounds and disciplines in them (such as humanities, environmental studies, policy and industry).

  • 2019

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article provides the first international overview and detailed discussion of teaching in the environmental humanities (EH). It is divided into three parts. The first offers a series of regional overviews: where, when, and how EH teaching is taking place. This part highlights some key regional variability in the uptake of teaching in this area, emphasizing important differences in cultural and pedagogical contexts. The second part is a critical engagement with some of the key challenges and opportunities that are emerging in EH teaching, centering on how the field is being defined, shared concepts and ideas, interdisciplinary pedagogies, and the centrality of experimental and public-facing approaches to teaching. The final part of the article offers six brief summaries of experimental pedagogies from our authorship team that aim to give a concrete sense of EH teaching in practice.

  • Pathways : Exploring the Routes of a Movement Heritage
  • 2022
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This anthology explores possibilities to acknowledge human motion, and traces thereof, as heritage. Today, with the increasing interest in local and sustainable connections, and in bodily and spiritual enhancement, we see a growing use of walking tracks both in landscapes within reach from urban centres and in more remotely located or ‘wild’ areas. The corona pandemic has further propelled these trends. Of course, landscapes that are commonly understood as wilderness or ‘nature’ are in most cases clearly influenced by human actions and movements. While walking trails tend to be regarded as pathways to experience nature and as tools to promote public health, they could also be seen and used as routes to culture and history, indeed as pathways to the past. Based on a Swedish research project with the aim to explore the multiple dimensions of walking, paths and movement, this volume engages and discusses the potential effects of such an expansion of the heritage register.

  • 1993
  • In: Kulturmiljövård. - Stockholm : Riksantikvarieämbetet. - 1100-4800. ; :2-3, s. 11-19
  • Journal article (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
