  • 2000
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2009. - 1
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2009
  • In: Analisi e Diritto. - Barcelona : Editorial MARCIAL PONS. - 1126-5779. ; 1, s. 159-176
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article on Axel Hägerström’s theory is presented in four sections. First, focus is on his meta-ethics, a perhaps lesser explored, but no less important aspect, which earned him the title of “father of modern non-cognivism”. His inaugural lecture at the Uppsala University, On the Truth of Moral Propositions from 1911 will be examined. Some very hot debates in the thirties and forties originated from this lecture that gave Hägerström his notorious nickname “axiological nihilist”. In section two, I will explain why his position cannot be properly understood as nihilism. This enables us to avoid a common misinterpretation and to illustrate in a more appropriate way Hägerström’s view of Hume’s law. By pointing to the specific features of Hägerström’s theory, the aim in section three is to determine what arguments of his can be considered the first form of modern non-cognitivism, as distinct from both classical moral relativism and Hobbes’ conventionalism. In section four, light is shed on the argumentative strategies used by Hägerström in defending the four meta-ethical theses that make up his “axiological nihilism”. This exposition enables further critical assessment on where to locate Hägerström in the contemporary debate on entanglement.

  • A Real Mind : The Life and Work of Axel Hägerström
  • 2009
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This comprehensive presentation of Axel Hägerström (1868-1939) fills a void in nearly a century of literature, providing both the legal and political scholar and the non-expert reader with a proper introduction to the father of Scandinavian realism. Based on his complete work, including unpublished material and personal correspondence selected exclusively from the Uppsala archives, A Real Mind follows the chronological evolution of Hägerström’s intellectual enterprise and offers a full account of his thought. The book summarizes Hägerström’s main arguments while enabling further critical assessment, and tries to answer such questions as: If norms are neither true nor false, how can they be adequately understood on the basis of Hägerström’s theory of knowledge? Did the founder of the Uppsala school uphold emotivism in moral philosophy? What consequences does such a standpoint have in practical philosophy? Is he really the inspiration behind Scandinavian state absolutism? A Real Mind places the complex web of issues addressed by Hägerström within the broader context of 20th century philosophy, stretching from epistemology to ethics. His philosophy of law is examined in the core chapters of the book, with emphasis on the will-theory and the relation between law and power. The narrative is peppered with vignettes from Hägerström’s life, giving an insightful and highly readable portrayal of a thinker who put his imprint on legal theory. The appendix provides a selected bibliography and a brief synopsis of the major events in his life, both private and intellectual. "The work offers an excellent reconstruction of Hägerström’s work and life, and presents his personal and intellectual evolution balancing perfectly the chronological and the systematic dimensions."Liborio L. Hierro, Professor of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Law, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain "The book is excellently-sourced, always well-argued, and makes a case for a revival of interest in Hägerström. I believe this to be important. Hägerström is relevant, insightful and interesting."Michael Freeman, LLM, Barrister, Professor of English Law, Faculty of Laws, University College London, United Kingdom

  • 2009
  • In: Analisi & Diritto. - Barcelona : Editorial MARCIAL PONS. - 1126-5779. ; 1, s. 73-97
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This essay aims to distinguish analytically the meanings of “citizenship” in the contemporary debate. According to the semantic area of reference, citizenship stands for a political status referring to the individual’s position within the polity; a legal status referring to the overall position of a subject characterized by a determinate sphere of capacities; a social status indicating the ascribed or achieved position of a person within the social stratification in the group. After distinguishing the three semantic areas and specifying the methodology used, focus switches to the structure, genesis and internal composition of the semantic areas. These are subsequently summed up in a scheme that accounts for the basic problem that a given semantic area attempts to respond to. The purpose is to explain, on the basis of practical examples, why the distinction is important and why there is so much confusion in the current debate. In the last section, I suggest another distinction, inspired by Aristotle’s third book of Politics according to which we should distinguish between what the citizen is and who a citizen is. The stake of the issue is to inquire on the plausibility of assuming that a person has to enjoy a determinate attribute or capacity in order to have the right or the legal obligation implied by the status of citizenship.

  • Reproductive and parental autonomy: an argument for compulsory parental education
  • 2009
  • In: Reproductive Biomedicine Online. - : Elsevier. - 1472-6491 .- 1472-6483. ; 19:1, s. 5-14
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper we argue that comprehensive and systematic parental education has the potential to equip young adults with the necessary information for the responsible exercise of their autonomy in choices about reproduction and parenting. Education can allow young adults to acquire largely accurate beliefs about reproduction and parenting and the implications of their reproductive and parental choices. Far from being a limitation of individual freedom, the acquisition of relevant information about reproduction and parenting and the acquisition of self-knowledge with respect to reproductive and parenting choices can help give shape to individual life plans. We make a case for compulsory parental education on the basis of the need to respect and enhance individual reproductive and parental autonomy within a culture that presents contradictory attitudes towards reproduction and where decisions about whether to become a parent are subject to significant pressure and scrutiny.

  • On a Romanian attempt to legislate on medically assisted human reproduction
  • 2008
  • In: Bioethics. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0269-9702 .- 1467-8519. ; 22:1, s. 56-63
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The paper presents and briefly analyses some of the provisions of a Romanian legislative proposal which arrived at the Presidency for ratification twice, in slightly different forms, and which was rejected twice: the first time at the Presidency in October 2004, and the second at the Constitutional Court in July 2005. The proposal was finally dropped in February 2006. My intention here is to point to some of the most problematic deficiencies of the legislative document in the hope that this may assist with future debates and regulations on assisted reproduction either in Romania or elsewhere. I have isolated the features to be discussed under two headings: (1) whose are the rights to reproduce, that the document claimed to 'acknowledge, regulate and guarantee' and (2) what is the status of the embryo, the child and the surrogate mother?

  • Sex is overrated : On the right to reproduce
  • 2009
  • In: Human Fertility. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1464-7273 .- 1742-8149. ; 12:1, s. 45-52
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • I will show that what is respected the most in human reproduction and parenting is not a right to reproduce in the way in which this right is explicitly proposed. The only way in which people can become, and function as, parents without having to submit themselves to anyone else’s judgments and decisions, is by having reproductive sex. Whatever one’s intentions, social status, standard of living, income etc., so long as assistance is not required, that person’s reproductive decisions will not be interfered with in any way, at least not until neglect or abuse of their offspring becomes known. Moreover, none of the features that are said to back the right to reproduce (such as bodily integrity or personal autonomy) can justify one’s unquestioned access to the relationship with another unable to consent (the child). This indicates that the discourse in terms of the right to reproduce as is currently used so as to justify non-interference with natural reproduction and parenting coupled with the regulation of assisted forms of reproduction and parenting, is at best self-deluding and that all it protects is people’s freedom to have reproductive sex and handle the consequences.

  • Making and sharing the space: initiatives for story-sharing and reconciliation among women and men in South Africa and Northern Ireland
  • 2006
  • In: Nederduitse Gereformeerde Teologiese Tydskrif. - : Stellenbosch. - 0378-9888. ; 47:3 & 4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article I present findings from my earlier research on reconciliation in South Africa and Northern Ireland, together with some issues raised by my current research project on “reconciliation in South Africa from women’s perspectives”. Reconciliation is seen as a process whereby the diverse “moral landscapes” held in a war-torn society are addressed, with the aim of building, rebuilding or transforming relationships between those in conflict. A common strategy is to provide “safe spaces” where people from all “sides” can broaden their “moral landscapes” and find sources of common ground by listening to, and being challenged by, each other’s life stories and personal experiences of the conflict. On the basis of my case studies, I identify some important conditions for such “story-sharing”, as well as certain dilemmas. I also ask critical questions about what beliefs and practices that may silence certain stories, and how space and power are shared between women and men in church and society, in particular in post-TRC South Africa.

  • Reconciliation and the Search for a Shared Moral Landscape – An exploration based upon a study of Northern Ireland and South Africa
  • 2001
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In Northern Ireland and South Africa obstacles to reconciliation were found in these elements of a “moral landscape”: – Experiences of trauma, separation and inequalities, – Divergent views of the conflict and of “the other”, – Opposing identifications and loyalties, – Norms for interaction, – Contestant interpretations of values such as “peace” and “justice”. This study describes how these obstacles have been addressed in: 1) Efforts, particularly by ecumenical groups, to bridge the Catholic/Protestant divide in Northern Ireland. 2) The work of, and debates surrounding, the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. On the basis of these dialogues in adverse circumstances, this study suggests some prerequisites for “emancipatory conversations” – a central question in the search for a global ethics. Ecumenical groups in Northern Ireland pursued a middle road between Unionism and Nationalism, focused on relationships between Catholics and Protestants, and stressed their shared responsibility. In South Africa there was more stress on the relationship between individual victims and perpetrators, on the responsibility of one group (i.e. whites) to repent, and on redistribution and material reparations as part of reconciliation. Initiatives for reconciliation in both contexts stressed dialogue, tolerance and non-violence. They were inspired by the notion of every person being created in God’s image and by a supreme loyalty to the God of all people. Particular attention was given to “storysharing”, i.e. the sharing of personal experiences of the conflict, rather than debating various viewpoints. Prerequisites for being able both to speak and to listen to “the other side” were: safety; equality of power; recognition of the humanity of “the other” and of one’s own human dignity; preparedness for critical self-examination; concern with one’s adversary’s welfare, and that the participants had achieved a sense of security in their own identities and some healing from their own traumas. A commitment to each other and the shared place of residence could serve as a basis for common ground, as could similar experiences of trauma, of parenthood, and (in Northern Ireland) of social class. Certain dilemmas were identified, such as what safety needs to prioritise, what stories to emphasise in the official discourse, and seeking harmony versus struggling to change inequalities.

  • The precarious practice of forensic psychiatric risk assessments
  • 2009
  • In: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-2527. ; 32:6, s. 400-407
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development of forensic psychiatric risk assessments is discussed from a clinical point of view using the example of Sweden. A central task in forensic psychiatry has traditionally been to identify dangerous, mentally disordered subjects considered to be prone to commit violent acts. Over time, “dangerousness” has been reworded into “risk”. Nevertheless, such assessments have generally been based on the psychiatric factors characterising the individual patient, while group interaction, situational factors, or social and cultural circumstances, such as the availability of alcohol and drugs, have been largely overlooked. That risk assessments have a focused on people with a diagnosis of “mental disorder” and been used as grounds for coercive measures and integrity violations has somehow been accepted as a matter of course in the public and political debate. Even the basic question whether offenders with a mental disorder are really more prone to criminal recidivism than other offenders seems to have been treated light-handedly and dealt with merely by epidemiological comparisons between groups of persons with broad ranges of psychosocial vulnerability and the general population. Legal texts, instructions and guidelines from the authorities in charge are often vague and general, while actors in the judicial system seem to put their trust in psychiatric opinions. The exchange of professional opinions, general public expectations, and judicial decision processes poses a huge risk for misunderstandings based on divergent expectations and uses of terminology.

  • Kyrklig och social reform : motiveringar till diakoni 1845-1965
  • 2006
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The main purpose of this dissertation is to see how proponents of diaconia justified the establishment of three Swedish diaconal institutions: Diaconissanstalten 1851 (The Institution for Deaconesses, Stockholm, now Ersta diakonissällskap/Ersta Association for Diaconal Work), Stockholms Stadsmission 1853 (The Stockholm City Mission) and Svenska Diakonanstalten 1898 (The Swedish institution for Deacons, first in Gävle, from 1905 in Stockholm, now Stiftelsen Stora Sköndal/The Stora Sköndal Foundation). Included is also a study of how diaconal work was justified in Sweden in the post-war period, a time when religious neutrality within health care and education was high on the political agenda. An additional purpose is to discuss how these justifications are related to the modern discourse of social work. The primary source material consists of journals that voiced the opinions of the aforementioned diaconal institutions, Parliamentary records and newspaper articles. This material is culled for justificatory arguments. The set of justifications found in each setting is discussed from three angles: theology, ideology and gender roles. The dissertation shows that justifications for diaconal institutions have varied over time, but that all the initiatives have reformism in common. Diaconal institutions are vindicated as projects for social and ecclesial improvement and not merely as instruments for the material or spiritual well-being of individuals. This reformist stance contrasts with how responsibility for one's neighbour was justified in pre-industrial Sweden: as a duty performed within a static society. Reformism in diaconia is in this dissertation looked upon as an early example of modernisation. The justifications of diaconal work found in the source material are the following. In the 1850s diaconal work was justified theologically as a means of revival and evangelism. The ideological stance of its proponents was social conservative. Female diaconia was propagated because women were regarded as particularly apt for nursing and caring. Around the year 1900 diaconal work was mainly a question of reinforcing the Church of Sweden as the spiritual and moral foundation of Swedish society. Ideologically, diaconia (both male and female) was still social conservative. The justification of male diaconia was that supposedly male characteristics could be made useful in a lay ministry at the service of the Church of Sweden. In post-war Sweden the basis for justifications shifted to social liberalism and a theology of stewardship.

  • 2002
- 0280-5723. ; , s. 97-110
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Zvinorwadza : being a patient in the religious and medical plurality of the Mberengwa district, Zimbabwe
  • 2000
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis deals with patients in a rural area of southern Africa and poses these basic questions: What does it mean to be ill in this part of the world and what do patients' life-worlds look like? In order to find answers to these questions, an in-depth fieldwork was carried out through which I was able to study how patients reacted to illness. I followed twenty patients in their search of ease, of which ten were members of Chief Mataga's family, with whom I was staying. Each patient, some relative(s) and the traditional healer(s) and faith healer(s) consulted constituted a "multi-episodical" case. In addition, a questionnaire was applied in order to collect supplementary information. A further area of research was the various factors which negatively and positively influenced the lives of people in the area. I examined those factors from both the insider and an outsider perspective and concluded that the phenomenon of illness and healing need to be regarded holistically and that it is of crucial importance to acknowledge patients' own ideas concerning those issues.

  • Shifting the Paradigm of the Philosophy of Science: the Philosophy of Information and a New Renaissance
  • 2003
  • In: Minds and Machines. - 1572-8641 .- 0924-6495. ; 13:4, s. 521-536
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Computing is changing the traditional field of Philosophy of Science in a very profound way. First as a methodological tool, computing makes possible “experimental Philosophy” which is able to provide practical tests for different philosophical ideas. At the same time the ideal object of investigation of the Philosophy of Science is changing. For a long period of time the ideal science was Physics (e.g. Popper, Carnap, Kuhn, and Chalmers). Now the focus is shifting to the field of Computing/Informatics. There are many good reasons for this paradigm shift, one of those being a long standing need of a new meeting between the sciences and humanities, for which the new discipline of Computing/Informatics gives innumerable possibilities. Contrary to Physics, Computing/Informatics is very much human-centered. It brings a potential for a new Renaissance, where Science and Humanities, Arts and Engineering can reach a new synthesis, so very much needed in our intellectually split culture. This paper investigates contemporary trends and the relation between the Philosophy of Science and the Philosophy of Computing and Information, which is equivalent to the present relation between Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Physics.
