  • The double axe in Minoan Crete : a functional analysis of production and use
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study examines the production and use of Minoan double axes with the aim of finding out what working activities they were used for. The double axe has earlier been associated with a woodworker, a carpenter, a stonemason and a butcher. These assumptions have not been substantiated through any detailed investigation of who used the double axes and for what purpose. This study includes 229 double axes, of which 21 have been thoroughly studied. The bronze smith’s knowledge reflects the end product and could make the difference between a good and a bad cast. The study has therefore included the whole production chain from obtaining the ore to casting and finally finishing treatments. The analyses showed that the double axes were cast in different moulds, had various casting defects and were finished off in different ways. Use-wear on the Minoan double axes was recorded. The use-wear varied and some axes only have a few dents while other axes have extremely blunt cutting edges. The axe bodies were also studied in order to distinguish whether they revealed any use-wear. In order to understand the results from the analyses of Minoan double axes, several experiments were undertaken. As comparative material 17 “modern” double axes were cast. The experiments included casting, finishing treatments and working activities on wood, stone and bone. The results for the Minoan double axes were then discussed with the help of the results from the experimental axes. To further substantiate the interpretations of the use-wear, the Minoan axes’ find contexts were investigated and briefly discussed. The conclusions are that all working activities could be verified by use-wear and by contexts. For example, a stonemason could be verified as working at or in the surroundings of the Zakros palace.

  • Evaluation of Stopping Criteria for Ranks in Solving Linear Systems
  • 2019. - Chapter 10
  • Ingår i: Data Analysis and Applications 1: Clustering and Regression, Modeling‐estimating, Forecasting and Data Mining, Volume 2. - Hoboken, NJ, USA : John Wiley & Sons. - 9781119597568 - 9781786303820 ; , s. 137-152
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bioinformatics, internet search engines (web pages) and social networks are some of the examples with large and high sparsity matrices. For some of these systems, only the actual ranks of the solution vector is interesting rather than the vector itself. In this case, it is desirable that the stopping criterion reflects the error in ranks rather than the residual vector that might have a lower convergence. This chapter evaluates stopping criteria on Jacobi, successive over relaxation (SOR) and power series iterative schemes. Numerical experiments were performed and results show that Kendall's correlation coefficient gives good stopping criterion of ranks for linear system of equations. The chapter focuses on the termination criterion as means of obtaining good ranks. It outlines some studies carried out on stopping criteria in solving the linear system.

  • Project: Fuel Efficient Transmission Technology Concepts: Design Methodology
  • 2010
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The need to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels is a major factor influencing governments and industry and decisions being made for future investments. In this vein, Volvo Construction Equipment AB has identified a new transmission technology which has been shown to offer a substantial saving in fuel consumption. The aim of this proposed project is to provide support towards achieving the objective of bringing this new transmission technology to the market as quickly as possible.

  • Modelling the normal retinal nerve fibre layer thickness as measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1435-702X .- 0721-832X. ; 244, s. 1607-1614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The variation in retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT) as measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT) in healthy subjects may be reduced when the effect on RNFLT measurements of factors other than disease is corrected for, and this may improve the diagnostic accuracy in glaucoma. With this perspective we evaluated the isolated and combined effects of factors potentially affecting the Stratus OCT RNFLT measurements in healthy subjects. Methods: We included 178 healthy eyes of 178 subjects between 20 and 80 years of age. Participants underwent an extensive eye examination. Stratus OCT RNFLT was measured by three standard protocols, two with high and one with standard image resolution. Effects on RNFLT of age, gender, refractive error, axial length, lens nuclear colour and opalescence, intra-ocular pressure (IOP), and optic disc size were examined by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Age, refractive error, axial length, and lens nuclear colour and opalescence affected RNFLT in univariate analyses, whereas gender, IOP, and optic disc size had no significant effect. In multivariate analyses only age in combination with refractive error, or with axial length, was significant and explained 14.7-17.6% (R-2 stop) of the total variation of RNFLT, approximately 50% more than age alone. RNFLT decreased by 2.6-2.9 mu m per increasing decade of age and increased by 1.5-1.8 mu m per more positive diopter of spherical equivalent using full-circle measurements of the three standard protocols. These effects varied between measurement sectors. Conclusions: RNFLT as measured by Stratus OCT standard protocols was significantly affected by age and refractive status. The effect on global RNFLT of a difference in refractive error of 10 diopters corresponded to the effect of a difference in age of 60 years. Theoretically, the effect of refractive status may be explained by artefacts of RNFLT measurement circle placement. The results suggest that the diagnostic accuracy of Stratus OCT may be improved by considering refractive status in addition to age when RNFLT is measured. For this purpose spherical equivalent seems as effective as axial length.

  • RELATIONSHIPS OF CRITICAL CONSTANTS AND BOILING POINTS TO COMPUTED MOLECULAR-SURFACE PROPERTIES
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. - UNIV NEW ORLEANS,DEPT CHEM,NEW ORLEANS,LA 70148. : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0022-3654 .- 1541-5740. ; 97:37, s. 9369-9373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is shown, for a large number of organic compounds of a variety of types, that their critical constants (T(c), V(c), and P(c)) and normal boiling points can be related to computed properties of the respective molecular surfaces. One of these is the surface area; the other is a measure of the molecule's tendency for electrostatic interactions. These properties are obtained by ab initio SCF computations at the STO-5G* level, using STO-3G* optimized geometries.
