  • Castle Dracula : Its Exact Location Reconstructed from Stoker's Novel, His Research Notes and Contemporary Maps

    • Bram Stoker's novel Dracula was published in 1897. In ten weeks, the centenary of Stoker's death will be commemorated. Today, Dracula is one of the best-known narratives worldwide. Since the 1970's, a wealth of secondary literature has developed. Several annotated editions of the novel have been published, as well as Stoker's personal research notes. The location of the vampire's headquarters, Castle Dracula, however, could not be reconstructed until now. Rather, it is generally assumed Stoker had no exact position in mind while writing the story.Based on the novel's travel descriptions, this paper will narrow down the Castle's territory with the help of modern satellite-based maps, interactive route navigators and high-resolution scans of contemporary military maps of Transylvania and Moldavia, until only two mountain peaks remain. An analysis of Stokers notes will reveal that Stoker's actually had one of these two peaks in mind while designing the final chapters of his book, but choose not to mention its name:Mount Izvorul Călimanului, 2,033 m high, located in the Transylvanian Kelemen Alps near the border with Romania, at 47°08'03" North, 25°17'19" East.

  • Differences in structure and hibernation mechanism highlight diversification of the microsporidian ribosome

    • Assembling and powering ribosomes are energy-intensive processes requiring fine-tuned cellular control mechanisms. In organisms operating under strict nutrient limitations, such as pathogenic microsporidia, conservation of energy via ribosomal hibernation and recycling is critical. The mechanisms by which hibernation is achieved in microsporidia, however, remain poorly understood. Here, we present the cryo-electron microscopy structure of the ribosome from Paranosema locustae spores, bound by the conserved eukaryotic hibernation and recycling factor Lso2. The microsporidian Lso2 homolog adopts a V-shaped conformation to bridge the mRNA decoding site and the large subunit tRNA binding sites, providing a reversible ribosome inactivation mechanism. Although microsporidian ribosomes are highly compacted, the P. locustae ribosome retains several rRNA segments absent in other microsporidia, and represents an intermediate state of rRNA reduction. In one case, the near complete reduction of an expansion segment has resulted in a single bound nucleotide, which may act as an architectural co-factor to stabilize a protein-protein interface. The presented structure highlights the reductive evolution in these emerging pathogens and sheds light on a conserved mechanism for eukaryotic ribosome hibernation.

  • Understanding the improvement in full childhood vaccination coverage in ethiopia using oaxaca–blinder decomposition analysis

    • In Ethiopia, full vaccination coverage among children aged 12–23 months has improved in recent decades. This study aimed to investigate drivers of the improvement in the vaccination coverage. The Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition technique was applied to identify the drivers using data from Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 2000 and 2016. The vaccination coverage rose from 14.3% in 2000 to 38.5% in 2016. The decomposition analysis showed that most of the rise in vaccination coverage (73.7%) resulted from the change in the effect of explanatory variables over time and other unmeasured characteristics. Muslim religion had a counteracting effect on the observed increase in vaccination coverage. The remaining 26.3% of the increase was attributed to the change in the composition of the explanatory variables between 2000 and 2016, with maternal educational level and maternal health care utilization as significant contributors. The findings highlight the need for further improvements in maternal health care utilization and educational status to maintain the momentum towards universal coverage of childhood vaccination. Targeted intervention among Muslim-dominated communities is also needed to improve the current situation. Besides which, future studies need to be conducted to identify additional potential modifiable factors.

  • Capturing processes in longitudinal multiple case studies

    • This paper discusses and suggests a methodological approach to capture processes in multiple case studies. While single case studies may address processes in an inductive or abductive manner, multiple case studies entail a stronger need for analytical frameworks and methodological tools developed ex ante in order to maintain focus on the same phenomena across cases and over time. This is, however, difficult to pursue in studies that focus on processes. The aim of the paper is to suggest an approach to longitudinal multiple case studies. We use an example of an on-going multiple case study aiming at capturing the processes of strategizing in terms of how the networking of start-up companies interplays with their ideas of future network positions. The paper concludes by suggesting the use of a combination of narratives and network drawings. Network drawings can be instrumental in capturing the past, the present and the future at different points in time for the individual cases. Based on these descriptions, change patterns and how these evolve can be analyzed and compared across cases and over time.

  • Exploring the roles of university spin-offs in business networks

    • This paper identifies different university spin-off (USO) roles related to resource interaction among business parties. It does so by mapping how USOs become part of business networks in terms of their roles relative to other parties. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on roles and resource interaction based on an industrial network approach to business markets. The empirical research is based on five cases of USOs representing a variety in terms of technology, degree of newness, sector, and area of application. As a result of the analysis, three different roles are identified: the USO as resource mediator, resource re-combiner and resource renewer. These roles reflect how USOs adapt resources to, or require changes among, business parties' resources. The paper also discusses the main resource interfaces associated with the three roles and related challenges. The paper contributes to previous research through illustrating USOs' roles relative to business parties from a resource interaction point of view, and by pointing to the establishment of new companies in business networks as a way of implementing innovation. Finally, the paper discusses the managerial implications of the research in terms of the USO's need to understand which role to take and how to develop it.
