  • Towards the smart window : progress in electrochromics
  • 1997
  • In: Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids. - 0022-3093 .- 1873-4812. ; 218, s. 273-279
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Electrochromic devices have the ability to produce reversible and persistent changes of their optical properties. The phenomenon is associated with joint ion and electron transport into/out of an electrochromic thin film, in most cases being a transition metal oxide. This paper outlines the various applications of such devices in smart windows suitable for energy-conscious architecture, in variable-reflectance mirrors, and in display devices. Critical materials issues and design concepts are discussed. The paper also covers two specific research topics: computed electronic structure of crystalline WO3 incorporating ionic species, showing how reflectance modulation emerges from a first-principles calculation; and Li+ dynamics in heavily disordered Ti oxide, illustrating how diffusion constants derived from impedance spectroscopy can be reconciled with the Anderson—Stuart model.

  • In Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization of L-lactide on the Surface of Pristine and Aminated Silica : Synthesis and Metal Ions Extraction
  • 2022
  • In: Polymers. - : MDPI. - 2073-4360. ; 14:22
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development of functional materials from food waste sources and minerals is currently of high importance. In the present work, polylactic acid (PLA)/silica composites were prepared by in situ ring-opening polymerizations of L-lactide onto the surface of pristine (Silochrom) and amine-functionalized (Silochrom-NH2) silica. The characteristics of the ring-opening polymerization onto the surface of modified and unmodified silica were identified and discussed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the polymerization of lactide onto the silica surface, and thermogravimetric analysis determined that PLA constituted 5.9% and 7.5% of the composite mass for Silochrom/PLA and Silochrom-NH2/PLA, respectively. The sorption properties of the composites with respect to Pb(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) ions were investigated, and the effect of contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and initial pH were evaluated. Silochrom-NH2/PLA composites were found to have a higher adsorption capacity than Silochrom/PLA for all chosen ions, with the highest adsorption value occurring for Pb2+ at 1.5 mmol/g (90% removal efficiency). The composites showed the highest performance in the neutral or near-neutral pH (created by distilled water or buffer pH 6.86) during the first 15 min of phase contact. The equilibrium characteristics of adsorption were found to follow the Langmuir isotherm model rather than the Freundlich and Temkin models. Perspective applications for these PLA/silicas include remediation of industrial wastewater or leaching solutions from spent lead-acid and Li-ion batteries.

  • (Ta1-xNbx)(2)O-5 films produced by atomic layer deposition : Temperature dependent dielectric spectroscopy and room-temperature I-V characteristics
  • 2001
  • In: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 90:9, s. 4532-4542
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Temperature dependent ac dielectric spectroscopy and room-temperature I–V characterization were performed on atomic layer deposited(Ta1−xNbx)2O5films. The high frequency permittivity, as well as the dc conductivity of the films, were found to increase with increasing Nb content. The conduction mechanism in the mixed Ta–Nb oxide films was of the Poole–Frenkel type, while the high field conduction in pure Ta2O5 was space-charge limited. The activation energy for dc conduction was higher in mixed Ta–Nb oxides compared to pure Ta2O5 and Nb2O5films. Irreversible changes in the conduction mechanism took place upon heat treatment above a certain irreversibility temperature. This temperature was higher for the mixed oxides than for the binary ones.
