  • Description and first application of a new technique to measure the gravitational mass of antihydrogen
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physicists have long wondered whether the gravitational interactions between matter and antimatter might be different from those between matter and itself. Although there are many indirect indications that no such differences exist and that the weak equivalence principle holds, there have been no direct, free-fall style, experimental tests of gravity on antimatter. Here we describe a novel direct test methodology; we search for a propensity for anti-hydrogen atoms to fall downward when released from the ALPHA antihydrogen trap. In the absence of systematic errors, we can reject ratios of the gravitational to inertial mass of antihydrogen 475 at a statistical significance level of 5%; worst-case systematic errors increase the minimum rejection ratio to 110. A similar search places somewhat tighter bounds on a negative gravitational mass, that is, on antigravity. This methodology, coupled with ongoing experimental improvements, should allow us to bound the ratio within the more interesting near equivalence regime.

  • The Legacies of Forced Freedom : China's Treaty Ports
  • Ingår i: Review of Economics and Statistics. - 0034-6535 .- 1530-9142.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the long-run development of China's treaty ports fromthe mid-18th century until today. Focusing on a sample of prefectures on thecoast or on the Yangtze River, I document the dynamic development paths oftreaty ports and their neighbours in alternate phases of closedness and openness.I also provide suggestive evidence on migration and sector-wise growth to under-stand the advantage of treaty ports in the long run.

  • Between Yarns and Electrons : A method for designing textural expressions in electromagnetic smart textiles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Design Conference 2021. - Kolding, DK.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of smart textiles presents a discrepancyof scale where the designer works at the level ofstructural textile design while facets of the materialexpress at scales beyond one’s senses. Withoutmethods to narrow this gap, certain expressionaldomains of the textile are closed off from designpossibilities. The aim of the research has been todesign a method for observing, visualizing, anddescribing expressions of electromagnetism intextiles. Through a method of textile surfacescanning, one can produce a visualization of itselectromagnetic field. Woven textile samplesobserved through this method reveal a texturalquality that exists within the electron flow – anelectromagnetic texture, which emerges at theintersection of woven design and electromagneticdomain variables. The design variables fieldstrength, diffusion, and field shape contribute innarrowing the gap that presents when one designssimultaneously at the scale of textile structure andelectron flow in yarns.

  • Affordances for Participation : Children's Appropriation of Rules in a Reggio Emilia School
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Mind, culture and activity. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1074-9039 .- 1532-7884. ; 19:1, s. 51-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores how young children appropriate school rules and what opportunities for active participation are afforded in a Reggio Emilia elementary classroom with particular interest in the interactional and communicative competences children display in situated practice. An ethnographic and microanalytic approach is used to study how the material environment and multimodal resources are mobilized in the activity. The analysis is based on video-recorded sequences in which 6- to 7-year-old children participate in a school project about rules for the schoolyard. The detailed analysis demonstrates how the children plan, reflect, enact, and discuss how to apply their own co-constructed rules in locally relevant ways in the playground. Overall, the findings shed light on how opportunities for children's active participation are situated within and also afforded by the particular Reggio Emilia educational practice that is also shaped by the learning process itself.

  • Pump-probe scheme for electron-photon dynamics in hybrid conductor-cavity systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 90:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent experiments on nanoscale conductors coupled to microwave cavities showed the prospect of transport investigations of electron-photon interplay in the deep quantum regime. Here we propose a pump-probe scheme to investigate the transient dynamics of individual electron-photon excitations in a double-quantum-dot-cavity system. Excitations pumped into the system decay via charge tunneling at the double dot, probed in real time. We investigate theoretically the short-time charge-transfer statistics at the dot for periodic pumping and show that this gives access to vacuum Rabi oscillations as well as excitation dynamics in the presence of double-dot dephasing and relaxation.
