  • Believing Androids? : fMRI activation in the right temporo-parietal junction is modulated by ascribing intentions to non-human agents
  • 2017
  • In: Social Neuroscience. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1747-0919 .- 1747-0927. ; 12:5, s. 582-593
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Attributing mind to interaction partners has been shown to increase the social relevance we ascribe to others’ actions and to modulate the amount of attention dedicated to them. However, it remains unclear how the relationship between higher-order mind attribution and lower-level attention processes is established in the brain. In this neuroimaging study, participants saw images of an anthropomorphic robot that moved its eyes left- or rightwards to signal the appearance of an upcoming stimulus in the same (valid cue) or opposite location (invalid cue). Independently, participants’ beliefs about the intentionality underlying the observed eye movements were manipulated by describing the eye movements as under human control or preprogrammed. As expected, we observed a validity effect behaviorally and neurologically (increased response times and activation in the invalid vs. valid condition). More importantly, we observed that this effect was more pronounced for the condition in which the robot’s behavior was believed to be controlled by a human, as opposed to be preprogrammed. This interaction effect between cue validity and belief was, however, only found at the neural level and was manifested as a significant increase of activation in bilateral anterior temporoparietal junction.

  • Small fish in a big pond : Product longevity design strategies for smart speakers
  • 2023
  • In: IASDR 2023: Life-changing design.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Extending the lifetime of the product, as one of the strategies for design for sustainability, may increase the value of the product in use, repair, recycle and disposal phases for a longer lifetime thereby decreasing demand for new manufacturing. However, employing these perspectives may be challenging and requires long development processes. In the current structure, small scale companies have a potential to be a significant actor in transition for sustainable manufacturing and design due to their agile development skills. We will present empirical data collected from eight participants regarding five small scale companies who design and manufacture long-lasting connected smart speakers. Key findings and implications highlight that small scale smart product producers strive to maintain control over design decisions in order to enhance the potential for long-lasting products; such companies thus need to be empowered towards distribution and decentralisation of design and manufacturing. To do so, (1) local manufacturing of the hardware is needed; (2) distributed and decentralised repair services need to be available to distribute the responsibility and increase the resilience of the product; (3) new types of intermediary relationships such as collaborating with local incubation centres and local initiatives should be encouraged; and (4) future designers may also need to practise their production skills and include open-source hardware and software development in their projects.

  • Advanced Transmitter Architectures Based on Switch Mode Power Amplifiers
  • 2014
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Nowadays the main driving parameters for the research in radio transmitters in wireless infrastructure are energy efficiency, frequency agility, and integration. This thesis presents new solutions at the device waveform-, circuit-, and transmitter level which exploit the inherent high efficiency potential of switch-mode power amplifiers (SMPAs) for realization of energy efficient, wide-band, highly integrated transmitters for wireless communication applications. In the first part of the thesis, a continuum of novel high efficiency class-E power amplifier modes are derived, significantly extending the known SMPA design space. In contrast to conventional SMPA modes, the new continuum allows some variation for the switch impedances, providing important possibilities on wide-band SMPA designs. This is experimentally verified in a 1 W SiGe BiCMOS SMPA design having a drain efficiency of above 70% over a 1.3-2.2 GHz bandwidth. In the second part a novel combiner synthesis technique is developed that enables realization of wide-band highly efficient outphasing transmitters. The technique is based on the calculation of the combiner network parameters from the boundary conditions required for highly efficient switch-mode operation of the transistors in each branch. The approach is validated in a CMOS-GaN outphasing transmitter design providing a peak output power of 44 dBm and a 7.5 dB output power back-off efficiency exceeding 52% over a 750-1050 MHz bandwidth. It is further shown that the same theoretical approach can also be used for design of Doherty PA combiner networks. A 28 W 3.5 GHz Doherty PA is designed and manufactured for experimental verification providing a record-high power added efficiency of 51% at an adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) of -50 dBc with carrier-aggregated 100 MHz LTE test signals. In the third part a new SMPA topology particularly suitable for amplification of RF pulse-width modulation (RF-PWM) signals is presented. In classical pulse width modulated SMPAs the varying pulse width leads to switching losses and hence efficiency degradation. We present an electronically tunable load output network that alleviates this problem.A 10 W 2 GHz CMOS-GaN RF-PWM transmitter demonstrator is constructed and characterized to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technique. ACLR after digital pre-distortion linearization is -45 dBc at a drain efficiency of 67% with W-CDMA communication signals. The solutions presented in this thesis will facilitate realizations of frequency agile, energy efficient and highly integrated/digitalized radio transmitters for future wireless communication systems.

  • Effective Potential for Magnetic Resonance Measurements of Restricted Diffusion
  • 2017
  • In: Frontiers in Physics. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-424X. ; 5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The signature of diffusive motion on the NMR signal has been exploited to characterize the mesoscopic structure of specimens in numerous applications. For compartmentalized specimens comprising isolated subdomains, a representation of individual pores is necessary for describing restricted diffusion within them. When gradient waveforms with long pulse durations are employed, a quadratic potential profile is identified as an effective energy landscape for restricted diffusion. The dependence of the stochastic effective force on the center-of-mass position is indeed found to be approximately linear (Hookean) for restricted diffusion even when the walls are sticky. We outline the theoretical basis and practical advantages of our picture involving effective potentials.

  • Traffic climate scale : Comparing samples from Turkey and Sweden
  • 2022
  • In: IATSS Research. - : Elsevier. - 0386-1112. ; 46:1, s. 130-137
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Traffic climate is a recent and one of the essential topics in traffic and transportation research. Various studies have examined the relations of traffic climate with driving outcomes such as accidents by using different versions of the Traffic Climate Scale (TCS). In a recent attempt, 16-items and 38-items versions of the TCS were examined in different countries. With respect to that, the present study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of 16-items and 38-items versions in samples from Turkey and Sweden and to test the traffic climate differences of these two countries. A total of 309 participants from Turkey and 357 participants from Sweden completed a questionnaire including a demographic information form and the TCS. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the short TCS had better fit indexes with acceptable reliability. Moreover, the traffic system in Turkey was perceived to be more internally and externally demanding and less functional compared to the traffic system in Sweden. The results suggest that the short TCS is a reliable and user-friendly measurement to understand the perception of road users.
