  • Tevatron Combination of Single-Top-Quark Cross Sections and Determination of the Magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix Element V-tb
  • 2015
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 115:15
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present the final combination of CDF and D0 measurements of cross sections for single-top-quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb(-1) per experiment. The t-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(t) = 2.25(-0.31)(+0.29) pb. We also present the combinations of the two-dimensional measurements of the s- vs t-channel cross section. In addition, we give the combination of the s + t channel cross section measurement resulting in sigma(s+t) = 3.30(-0.40)(+0.52) pb, without assuming the standard model value for the ratio sigma(s)/sigma(t). The resulting value of the magnitude of the top-to-bottom quark coupling is vertical bar V-tb vertical bar = 1.02(-0.05)(+0.06), corresponding to vertical bar V-tb vertical bar > 0.92 at the 95% C. • Measurement of transverse-single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity and forward-rapidity production of hadrons in polarized p plus p collisions at root s=200 and 62.4 GeV
  • 2014
  • In: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 90:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Measurements of transverse-single-spin asymmetries (A(N)) in p + p collisions at root s = 62.4 and 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are presented. At midrapidity, A(N) is measured for neutral pion and eta mesons reconstructed from diphoton decay, and, at forward rapidities, neutral pions are measured using both diphotons and electromagnetic clusters. The neutral-pion measurement of A(N) at midrapidity is consistent with zero with uncertainties a factor of 20 smaller than previous publications, which will lead to improved constraints on the gluon Sivers function. At higher rapidities, where the valence quark distributions are probed, the data exhibit sizable asymmetries. In comparison with previous measurements in this kinematic region, the new data extend the kinematic coverage in root s and p(T), and it is found that the asymmetries depend only weakly on root s. The origin of the forward A(N) is presently not understood quantitatively. The extended reach to higher p(T) probes the transition between transverse momentum dependent effects at low p(T) and multiparton dynamics at high p(T).

  • Production of omega mesons in p plus p, d plus Au, Cu plus Cu, and Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2011
  • In: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 84:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p + p, d + Au, Cu+ Cu, and Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu Cu and Au + Au collisions show that. production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi(0) and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. The nuclear modification factors, R-AA, are consistent in Cu + Cu and Au + Au collisions at similar numbers of participant nucleons.

    • Reliable data with less variation play a key role for acceptance of the usefulness of the measurement output of a wheel profile measurement system (WPMS) in a railway network. However, in practice, most studies are carried out without checking the reliability of data from such a system, which may lead to inappropriate maintenance strategies. To ensure the measurement capability of WPMS and to support robust maintenance in railway systems, this study has evaluated measurement data for the flange height, flange thickness, flange slope, and tread hollowing of rolling stock wheels by using gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R). In this study, acceptance and rejection criteria for the precision-to-tolerance ratio (PTR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and discrimination ratio (DR) have been employed to evaluate the measurement capabilities. For the purpose of illustration, we have implemented a new proposed approach. This approach involves both an analysis using graphs with four regions with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% and an analysis using a graph with three regions with only the predicted values; the latter type of graph represents an innovation made in this study. The results show that the measurements of the tread hollowing and flange slope are on an acceptable level, while those for the flange height and flange thickness have to be rejected as unacceptable. The action proposed to increase the quality of data on the flange height and flange thickness is to enhance the calibration of the WPMS. In conclusion, GR&R is a useful tool to evaluate the measurement capability of WPMS and to provide helpful support for maintenance decision making.

  • J/psi production in root s(NN)=200 GeV Cu+Cu collisions
  • 2008
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 101:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Yields for J/psi production in Cu+Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range |y|< 2.2 and compared with results in p+p and Au+Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie. Cold nuclear matter estimates based on ad hoc fits to d+Au data describe the Cu+Cu data up to N-part similar to 50, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density of at least 1.5 GeV/fm(3).

  • Elliptic and Hexadecapole Flow of Charged Hadrons in Au plus Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2010
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 105:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Differential measurements of the elliptic (upsilon(2)) and hexadecapole (upsilon(4)) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p(T)) and collision centrality or number of participant nucleons (N-part) for Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV/ The upsilon(2,4) measurements at pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar <= 0.35, obtained with four separate reaction-plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3.9, show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant Delta eta-dependent nonflow correlations. Sizable values for upsilon(4)(p(T)) are observed with a ratio upsilon(4)(p(T), N-part)/upsilon(2)(2)(p(T), N-part) approximate to 0.8 for 50 less than or similar to N-part less than or similar to 200, which is compatible with the combined effects of a finite viscosity and initial eccentricity fluctuations. For N-part greater than or similar to 200 this ratio increases up to 1.7 in the most central collisions.

  • Beam Energy and Centrality Dependence of Direct-Photon Emission from Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
  • 2019
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 123:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.41 GeV/c) direct-photon yield dNγdir/dη is a smooth function of dNch/dη and can be well described as proportional to (dNch/dη)α with α≈1.25. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different A+A collision systems. At a given beam energy, the scaling also holds for high pT (>5 GeV/c), but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional sNN-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield. © 2019 authors. • Measurement of Bottom Versus Charm as a Function of Transverse Momentum with Electron-Hadron Correlations in p plus p Collisions at s=200 GeV
  • 2009
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 103:8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The momentum distribution of electrons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom quarks for midrapidity |y|< 0.35 in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV is measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 2 < p(T)< 7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined using partial D/D -> e(+/-)K(-/+)X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4 GeV/c in p(T). A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom production cross section at this energy is sigma(bb)=3.2(-1.1)(+1.2)(stat)(-1.3)(+1.4)(syst)mu b.

  • More Water, Less Grass? : An assessment of resource degradation and stakeholders’ perceptions of environmental change in Ombuga Grassland, Northern Namibia
  • 2007
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The objectives of this thesis are to assess: to what degree have natural resources deteriorated in a grazing area in northern Namibia, how do perceptions of environmental change held by local stakeholders there, correspond to scientific assessments, and how do these relate to national estimates? Analysis of the process of developing national indicators for monitoring of land degradation concluded that specific indicators should be developed on national level, and in some instances even on local level as there are no universal causes of land degradation. According to farmers overgrazing and low rainfall since the early 1990s cause negative environmental changes in the study area, partly confirming findings from national monitoring. Results also suggest that: less grazing outside the study area, improved access, permanent water supply, and fencing of large areas, also contributed. Results show that improved water supply was the most important factor. Investigation of the influence of permanent water points on grazing resources showed that perennial grasses are replaced by less palatable annual grasses as far as 6 km from water points along a water pipeline. No significant grazing induced changes in grass composition were observed around privately owned wells. Private ownership seems to be a key factor preventing over-utilization of grazing resources around the latter. A remote sensing study using Landsat TM imagery identified bare ground, saltpans and grassland with a fair accuracy. Separation of woodland from shrubland and shrubland from grassland was less accurate using supervised classification. The results show that the soil adjusted vegetation index provides valuable information about variations of green biomass over time in semi-arid environments. However, it is suggested that satellite based investigations should be supported by thorough ground based assessment due to the influence of underlying soil in this environment.
