  • Inferring origin-destination distribution of agent transfer in a complex network using deep gated recurrent units
  • 2023
  • In: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Predicting the origin-destination (OD) probability distribution of agent transfer is an important problem for managing complex systems. However, prediction accuracy of associated statistical estimators suffer from underdetermination. While specific techniques have been proposed to overcome this deficiency, there still lacks a general approach. Here, we propose a deep neural network framework with gated recurrent units (DNNGRU) to address this gap. Our DNNGRU is network-free, as it is trained by supervised learning with time-series data on the volume of agents passing through edges. We use it to investigate how network topologies affect OD prediction accuracy, where performance enhancement is observed to depend on the degree of overlap between paths taken by different ODs. By comparing against methods that give exact results, we demonstrate the near-optimal performance of our DNNGRU, which we found to consistently outperform existing methods and alternative neural network architectures, under diverse data generation scenarios.

  • Attitudes towards work life among clients in psychiatric outpatient clinics
  • 2023
  • In: Nordic Journal of Rehabilitation.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of the study was to explore factors related to recovery back to work life among clients in psychiatric outpatient clinics. An inventory was answered by 270 participants. Besides descriptives, chi2, ANOVA analyses and standard multiple regression were carried out. The main results were that about 20 % of the participants had experienced prejudices in their care contacts and 30% had experiences of prejudices at work sites. The participants who worked had experienced fewer prejudices and had higher recovery self-efficacy and fighting spirit than those who did not work. Multiple regression analyses revealed that fighting spirit and social support in work life were associated with the intention to work. The results partly reflect previous research but highlight the importance of work and fighting spirit in the recovery process. Improvements, such as incentives to employers and interventions which decrease prejudices, are suggested.

  • Nonlinear interactions between electromagnetic waves and electron plasmas oscillations in quantum plasmas
  • 2007
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 99:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We consider nonlinear interactions between intense circularly polarized electromagnetic (CPEM) waves and electron plasma oscillations (EPOs) in a dense quantum plasma, taking into account the electron density response in the presence of the relativistic ponderomotive force and mass increase in the CPEM wave fields. The dynamics of the CPEM waves and EPOs is governed by the two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations and Poisson's equation. The nonlinear equations admit the modulational instability of an intense CPEM pump wave against EPOs, leading to the formation and trapping of localized CPEM wave pipes in the electron density hole that is associated with a positive potential distribution in our dense plasma. The relevance of our investigation to the next generation intense laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments is discussed.

  • A demonstration of contextuality using quantum computers
  • 2022
  • In: European journal of physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0143-0807 .- 1361-6404. ; 43:5, s. 055401-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Open-access, online quantum computers have shown significant improvements in the past decade. Although they still suffer from noise and scalability limitations, they do offer the possibility of experimenting with quantum circuits which would otherwise have required laboratory resources and prowesses beyond the reach of most students (and even researchers). In view of this, we revisit from the ground up the notion of contextuality and show that it can now be easily demonstrated on one of the IBM quantum computers. We showcase this with an implementation of the Peres-Mermin square which, despite the high error rates, manages to violate noncontextuality by almost 28 standard deviations.
