  • A velocity-pressure streamline diffusion finite element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
  • 1990
  • In: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - LAUSANNE : Elsevier BV. ; 84:2, s. 175-192
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper a streamline diffusion finite element method is introduced for the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domnain in R^2 and R^3 in the case of high Reynolds number flow. An error estimate is proved and numerical results are given. The method is based on a mixed velocity-pressure formulation using the same finite element discretization of space-time for the velocity and the pressure spaces, which consists of piecewise linear functions, together with certain least-squares modifications of the Galerkin variational formulation giving added stability without sacrificing accuracy.

  • On the convergence of shock-capturing streamline diffusion finite element methods for hyperbolic conservation laws
  • 1990
  • In: Mathematics of Computation. - PROVIDENCE : American Mathematical Society (AMS). - 0025-5718 .- 1088-6842. ; 54:189, s. 107-129
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We extend our previous analysis of streamline diffusion finite element methods for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws to include a shock-capturing term adding artificial viscosity depending on the local absolute value of the residual of the finite element solution and the meh size. With this term present, we prove a maximum norm bound for finite element solutionsof Burgers' equation an thus complete an earlier convergence proof for this equation. We further prove, using entropy variables, that a strong limit of finite element solutions is a weak solution of the system of conservation laws and satisfies the entropy inequality asociated with the entropy variables. Results of some numerical experiments for the time-dependent compressible Euler equations in two dimensions are also reported.

  • A study of mu-mu- and e-mu-pairs produced in 450 GeV/c p-Be--collisions in HELIOS, and software development for DELPHI.
  • 1990
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The main part of this thesis treats measurements in the HELIOS experiment of the production of e-mu and mu+mu-pairs in 450 GeV/c p-Be collisions. The mumu measurement covers the kinematical covers the kinematical range of 2Mmu < M < 1.5 GeV, 0.03 < xF < 0.25, and 0 < pT < 2 GeV. Production of the vector mesons rho, omega , and phi is observed. The branching ratio omega to mu+mu- is for the first time experimentally measured. The continuum at masses below the mu mass is studied, and compared with the contributions from known sources, normalized to the vector meson peaks in the mu+mu- mass spectrum, and to measurements in this experiment of the mu cross section. The res ult is compared with that of other experiments, discussed in terms of different background estimates used. A significant signal of unlike-sign e-mu-pairs is observed, forming a continuum peaking at a mass below 500 MeV. Correlations between e-mu and neutrino production are studied. The shape of the e-mu mass and missng-energy spectra indicate significant non-charm contributions. A search for lepton-number-violating decays is made, resulting in upper limits on a number of branching ratios. Also discussed here is the author's work in the DELPHI experiment, contributions that are related to analysis of heavy quark production. Keywords: muon. pair, dimuon, dilepton, lepton, low mass, continuum, eta, rho, omega, branching ratio, emu, e-mu, mue, mu-e, muon-electron, electron-muon, electron, charm, neutrino, missing energy

  • A 10-year follow-up of patients treated for dental fear.
  • 1990
  • In: Scandinavian journal of dental research. - 0029-845X. ; 98:1, s. 53-9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Different types of treatment have been used in trying to reduce dental anxiety in adult patients with severe fear and avoidance behavior. However, there is an obvious shortage in long-term treatment follow-up. The present investigation reports results over a period of 10 yr of 14 patients treated for dental fear in a specialized dental fear treatment and research clinic. The aims of this project were to evaluate patients' regularity in dental behavior between 1977 and 1987, changes in and present level of dental fear and other long-standing positive/negative effects of the respective initial treatments. The 14 dental phobic patients were assigned to two treatment groups, one receiving Systematic Desensitization and one Premedication with valium before dental treatment. Pre- and posttreatment status as well as the 10-yr follow-up were evaluated by psychometric (Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale and a Mood Adjective Checklist) and physiological (Skin Conductance Response) measurements. A majority of patients (100% SD, 63% P) reported regular dental care during the period 1977-87. Positive side-effects were reported by seven patients. A significant reduction of dental fear (DAS) was found with a better effect for the SD-group. This was paralleled by a rise in mood (MACL). The SCR figures were non-significant. In conclusion, the results revealed long-standing effects with regard to a high degree of regular dental care and reduction of dental fear. In addition, positive side-effects were reported.

  • On memory and the collaborative construction and deconstruction of custody case arguments
  • 1990
  • In: Human Communication Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0360-3989 .- 1468-2958. ; 17:2, s. 289-314
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In a simulation of lay judges’ deliberations, it is shown how the participants selectively misconstrued courtroom evidence, depending on their overall story frameworks. All participants had received a common set of background information (drawn from an authentic custody case). In addition, one person in each group had, unknowingly, received some unique pieces of information. The “lay judges” produced several spontaneous misrepresentations of the background material. Moreover, they would often accept and retell false “facts” (introduced by a participant with different background information), unless these “facts” were integrated into opposing account frameworks. Hence it is shown how misrepresentations are often coconstituted.
