  • This work was compiled to provide a worldwide perspective of the Specidae, including a reclassification of all categories down to generic level, with keys for all categories, illustrations and data on distribution. In addition, previously published information including details of biology is reviewed, particular problems of taxonomy are pointed out, morphological terminology for the family is standardised, an up-to-date generic catalogue is presented, and the species are listed, with their synonyms. Examples of all but 5 of the 226 genera recognised in the book have been studied. Topics not dealt with or dealt with only cursorily, are comparative anatomy of the mouthparts, female terminalia, internal organs, eggs, larvae and pupae, the metasternal area of the thorax and leg details.
