Chemoinformatics as a multidiscipline : Using standardised systems for nomenclature

• As early as in 1994 there were over 14,000,000 described chemical compounds, of which more than 6,000,000 were organic; in 1999 the number of chemical compounds totalled more than 21,000,000 and in 2001 more than 30,000,000. Thus, there is a great need for a rational management of names and properties. Studying the currently most frequently used standard nomenclature systems, and some more recent attempts within Chemistry, we find there are lessons to be learned that could be used in other sciences as well. The difficulties of transforming three-dimensional bodies into two- or one-dimensional descriptions have in part been solved. Could these experiences be of use in other fields of expertise? Multidisciplinary development should be of great help to improve existing systems
