Information Systems Development in an Application Package Environment

• This paper will focus on how we "attack" information systems development when an organization wants to use application packages for improving their business activities. Application packages are ready-made software which you can buy from a vendor in the market. Acquisition of packaged software is, according to our experiences, a very special environment for systems development. There is a need for new methodologies and Case-tools in order to handle a package situation in a proper manner. The purpose of this paper is to present the SIV-methodology and the Case-tool SIV-DOC which we have designed for an application package environment. The SIV-approach consists of three main areas to systems development: Selection, Adaptation and Implementation of application packages in organizations. For each area we have a number of method steps, description techniques, and evaluation critera as a systematic way of working with the package alternative for systems development.
