  • In this work the nature of pantograph arcing is studied. It originates from an imperfect contact between the catenary, delivering power to the train, and the pantograph of the train. The arc acts as a source of EMI but due to the complex nature of the arc and the associated conductor structure, it is very hard to perform direct measurements on the emitted electromagnetic fields. A model of the characteristics of the arc is proposed. This model can be used together with analytical methods or with simulation tools to investigate the electromagnetic fields and determine the threat to other sensitive systems from the field bound EMI created by these arcs.
