This abstract presents a doctoral thesis concerning young people and the transition from youth to adulthood in a Swedish working class town. The interaction between the individual, and the society are discussed through three key transitions, education, work, and ‘building your own life’. The young people in the study have a working class culture and the town is looked upon as a working-class town. This culture sets the conditions for the young people on their road to adulthood. The working class culture also sets the conditions for how the institutional practices work with and how they regard working class youth. This qualitative sociological study is about youth and Society in a specific Swedish context. In order to understand this context and its conditions you have to understand the town history. It is only in light of history you can understand the positions and interactions between individuals and Society of today.
