  • This book presents Julia Kristeva's psychoanalytic theory of literature and interpretation. A brief historical and intellectual background to the development of her theory is given and its central concepts are defined. The relations between Kristeva's theory and the French phenomenological tradition of interpretation are described and clarified by means of a discussion of her analyses of Stéphane Mallarmé in comparison with those of Jean Pierre Richard on the one hand and Jacques Derrida on the other. In Julia Kristeva's psychoanalytic poetics literature is considered as an experience. 'Experience' is here used in a technical sense. She tries to demonstrate that the speaking subject and a fortiori the subject of the signifying practice is tied to the primary object, the archaic maternal pole of need, desire, love and repulsion in the psyche. In her literary analysis Kristeva aims at unveiling this experience. In literature, Kristeva holds, language becomes a conveyor and transformer of passion, and she therefore regards literary words as something more than linguistic signs — they translate sensations and drives into metaphors.Kristeva's psychoanalytic poetics has a normative dimension. Part of the value of literature lies in its cathartic effects. Catharsis is in Kristeva's view a retrieval of the subject's past in order to displace and transform it into poetic language. Kristeva's theories of metaphor and catharsis are discussed and assessed in the light of her interpretations of Baudelaire and Duras.
