Responding to modern research in natural sciences and Biblical studies, two laymen of the Evangelical movement launched apologetic periodicals in Sweden in the first decade of the 20th century to defend the infallibility of the Bible. In Facklan, Waldemar Lönnbeck published translated articles written by British and American conservative scientists, while Axel B. Svensson’s Nya Väktaren had a more national and popular profile, which included edifying articles. The editors of the two monthly journals acted as brothers-in-arms but competed in the same market of Evangelical Christians. They developed a strongly polemical style in their criticism of contemporary phenomena. While Lönnbeck identified the materialism of modern science as a major threat to traditional Christian faith, Svensson related to the Bible-view debate within the Swedish Evangelical Mission.
