  • Abstract - Lecture-Recital - What is perceived as a singing tone? Stockholm Research Week, January 18th 2023.Jaroslaw Jan Kaliski, Assistant Professor of musical performanceIn this lecture-recital, the interplay between piano technique and vocal performance is explored to understand how the piano can emulate the singing voice. The presenter shares insights into enhancing the clarity and expressiveness of vocal music through a pianistic approach. The discussion addresses the challenges of producing a singing tone on the piano—an instrument with a fundamental difference from the human voice. Technical aspects such as legato, articulation, and the use of body weight in sound production are examined, alongside interpretative elements like poetic text treatment and agogic application. Using examples from both opera arias and romantic piano repertoire, the role of the piano in vocalists' musical path is analyzed, emphasizing the importance of rhythm and phrasing. The lecture reflects on artistic development and offers practical musicianship guidance, providing performers with creative solutions to express the nuances of vocal music on the piano.
