- In this article, it is argued that the time has come to develop new approaches to the study of the role of sacrifice in the prophetic literature in the Hebrew Bible. One potentially fruitful approach, informed by rhetorical analysis and metaphor theory, is outlined. The main focus lies on the rhetorical purpose of bringing sacrificial language into a discourse which primarily deals with some other topic. This approach is illustrated by preliminary analyses of two passages where home-coming from diaspora is depicted by means of sacrificial metaphors: Isaiah 66:20 and Ezekiel 20:40-42.
