  • This study is partly a result of the project "Language and Ethnicity. Standard Language Differentiation and Attitudes towards Language in Bosnia and Herzegovina," funded by the Swedish Research Council. The author uses a somewhat philological approach, studying grammars that to some extent have been used, or are known, in education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as language textbooks and readers for Bosniac, Croat and Serb pupils respectively in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The author studies the language in which the books are written, using variation in spelling, lexicon and word-formation as a tool, and checking the usage against prescriptive manuals for the Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian standards. In Chapter One grammars are analyzed; in Chapter Two language textbooks; and in Chapter Three readers. Questions addressed are those that are currently debated in former Yugoslavia, such as the genesis of the South Slavic languages (diasystems), including what the authors have to say about the dialect basis of the standard languages and the development of the South Slavic standards based on dialects of Central South Slavic (Serbo-Croatian). Other topics are the naming of languages and stan-dard languages, the differences between the standard languages, and the atti-tudes towards the differences. In this context it is examined in what language the books are written and what (or if) the authors say (anything) about the language of the "others". These issues are discussed in a concluding Chapter Four. Due to the complexity of the language situation in former Yugoslavia, the author has tried to define or address some of the most important notions in Chapter Five called Definitions. In this chapter and in the Appendices some important documents concerning the language question are presented.
