Folkliga fågelnamn : artnamn för beckasinfåglar i nordiska språk

• Många dialektala artnamn för fåglar finns upptecknade vid dialektarkiven i Norden. Avhandlingen koncentrerar sig till artnamn för beckasinfåglar (enkel-, dubbel-, dvärgbeckasin samt morkulla) totalt ca 330 folkliga artnamn.De flesta namnen avser enkelbeckasinen, som p.g.a. sitt bräkande/gnäggade läte har eggat folkfantasin och lett till olika associativa artnamn. Även morkullans knarrande läte har varit namngivande. Andra artnamn speglar den långa näbb som är gemensam för de fyra arterna. De olika ord som ingår i artnamnen har delats in i olika grupper efter sin betydelse. Dessa har i sin tur ordnats i två huvudkategorier: namn efter lätet respektive namn efter synintrycket. En särskild grupp utgör de namn som utgår från folkliga föreställningar.Artnamnens olika ursprung, bildning, förekomst och utveckling utgör tillsammans med ordens etymologi en grund för slutsatser om namngivningsprocessen. Vårt behov att identifiera och klassificera fenomen i vår omgivning i kombination med känslomässiga upplevelser är viktiga ingredienser i denna process. Ett anmärkningsvärt läte eller ett iögonenfallande utseende har därför lockat till många folkliga artnamn, medan de vetenskapliga artnamnen enbart utgår från vetenskapliga iakttagelser.De flesta av de undersökta artnamnen tillhör ett äldre språkskick, men flera folkliga artnamn har också visat sig vara skapade på senare år. Detta visar att en folklig klassifikation och namngivning fortfarande är en fungerande del av vårt språk.

• In Scandinavian languages there are many popular bird names, most of which have been recorded at the dialect archives in the Nordic countries. The thesis concentrates on the bird names for snipes, i.e. the common snipe, the great snipe, the jacksnipe and the woodcook, in all approx. 330 different names. Some of these are recognized in all Scandinavia, while others are only sparsely confirmed in single dialects.An especially large amount of names refers to the common snipe, mainly due to its typical vibration sound. While the sound mostly resembles a cer­tain unobtrusive whinny from a horse or bleat from a goat or a sheep, many of the popular names contain words associating to these animals. Names describing a par­ticular creaking sound mostly refer to the woodcock. Fairly common are names describing a protru­ding beak, which is a characteristic feature of all snipes.In order to present a complete semantic and etymological picture, all words forming part of the names have been identified and sorted by category, i.e. words indicating a common implicit meaning. The categories have in turn been divided into two main groups: words describing different sounds, and words describing vi­sual impressions. In ad­dition, names describing popular beliefs and those transferred from other bird spe­cies are presented.Factors that influence origin, formation, existence and development of bird na­mes have especially been taken in consideration. With the etymological discussion forming the necessary background, ethnological as well as cultural influences have been added in order to complete the picture of the naming process. One important factor in this process is man’s need of identification and classification of phenomena in his environment. Another main ingredient is the presence vs. lack of affect in the process. In the popular naming process a striking sound along with a particular ap­pearence have caused many affected names, while scientific names mostly refer to visual, non-affected impressions.Due to man’s present lack of everyday connection with nature many of the popu­lar bird names presented are no longer in use. However, some of the na­mes are pro­ven to be fairly young, which shows that the process of popular classification and naming is still a functioning part of our language and culture.
