  • Although wrongful convictions have been systematically linked to police interrogation practice, empirical literature in the domain is scarce. A survey was carried out to examine police investigators' beliefs about attitudes related to interrogation tactics and practice, detecting deceptive statements and the scope of wrongful convictions, Participants were Swedish police detectives (N = 81) whose main tasks were investigations of domestic violence (mean years of experience = 23). Estimates of wrongful convictions and false confessions were low compared to the field data, and self-reported deception detection skills were somewhat inflated. The most commonly endorsed interrogation tactics were largely information-gathering rather than accusatory.
