Crisis and organisational innovation – Icelandic local governments responding

• In this paper we examine the relation between radical change in the institutional context and organisational innovation. The paper is based on an exploratory case study of Icelandic local governments, conducted during the fall 2010. While many crises, when scrutinised closely, are more threats of crisis, the economic crisis in Iceland is a crisis with real and immediate effects. In this article we argue that although many actions to handle the crisis are taken, the main part of them are reactive and in some respect non-innovative. But there are also actions that are innovative – at least in this context and as a solution to this particular problem. The crisis has lead to actions that promotes cooperation, reorganisation, acquiescence and involvement.
