- The osseointegration process is typically characterized by the overlap of different stages, including the initial inflammatory response, initial bone formation, osseous anchorage and bone remodeling. Each stage is characterized by a specific set of cellular and molecular events. Advances in molecular biology and biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, wound-healing physiology, materials science and engineering, and novel laboratory techniques, have provided incentives and opportunities for renewed and ever-increasing interest in detailed studies of the mechanisms of osseointegration. The aim of this chapter is to illustrate the sequence of molecular interaction, cellular events and the general pattern of the osseointegration process performed following implant placement. Further, the influence of surface modification on cellular and molecular activity at the bone-implant interface is discussed on the basis of recent in vivo investigations.
