  • Based on the changes of policy landscapes towards competitiveness within the mass higher education system, the aim of this study is to describe how early career academics in Education Sciences experience recruitment strategies and positioning processes in their careers. The study analyzes, how career capital, symbolic spacing and value are achieved, in order to get recognition in careers. How “career capital” is produced by placing in recruitment in academia as a specific career field (Harris & Ramos, 2013), will be analyzed. Based on 40 qualitative interviews in the field of Education Sciences, institutional practices, competences, individual spacing and positioning within the field and career strategies developed are analyzed. Purposeful sampling enhances a variation in the institutional practices, which vary in terms of their predominant focus: teacher education, research or mixed teaching and research. The analysis shows three recruitment strategies, spacing and positioning practices, identified in relation to these academics career positions, as "the invited," "the useful" or "the uninvited", showing, that the “Matthew effect” becomes relevant in recruiting strategies, spacing and positioning practices in the early career phase. Being a “promising researchers”, a “teacher” or a “substitute” shows the spacing and positioning practices in their effects and possibilities to advance move on and chose in an academic career.
