Heritage Planning and Design

• Heritage planning and design is here understood as the intersection between urban heritage and urban planning and design. In response to societal development over the past few decades, a number of urban planning and design ideals—urbanisms—have emerged, in particular re‐urbanism, new urbanism, posturbanism, and everyday urbanism. They are based on different notions about contemporary society, future prospects, and the role of the past and urban heritage in urban development. In some cases, heritage is considered a resource, and in others an obstacle. In any given situation and context, the dominating urbanism, together with the prevailing approach to the past, will define the specific urban heritage, and thus will influence how we understand the past.
