Tidig vetenskap på svenska – Christopher Polhem skriver om teoretisk och tillämpad "mechanique"

An important step in the development of Swedish as a scientific language was the new Royal Academy of Sciences’ decision to launch a scientific, Swedish-language journal. The basic criteria for the articles published in the journal were novelty, utility and a solid empirical base for the knowledge conveyed. One of the contributors in the early years of the journal was Christopher Polhem, a much celebrated, elderly mechanic, constructor and inventor. Our general view of the 18th century as the era of development of scientific disciplines and scientific writing in Swedish does not apply to Polhem. He represented an already well-established discipline and he only wrote in Swedish. We can therefore expect many of the qualities typical of established scientific writing to be already present in his texts. In this article, four of his texts in the Transactions of the Royal Academy of Sciences are analyzed in relation to the established criteria.
