  • The origin of this book was a context where I was asked to do a lecture on young voices and also, to do a workshop on the subject. I wanted to bring material that I knew for sure that the participants did not know of. Besides, I also wanted to get them started properly with both body, mind and voice. That was the reason I composed the song Come and sing a song. Inspired by the feedback from that occasion I continued to compose several songs/exercises and in the end, it had become a book. The goal has been to make a book containing music from different genres and cultures, and one that can be used in solo singing as well as ensemble- and choir singing. The songs are well suited for both adults, adolescents and children. The styles vary and contain features of classical, pop, gospel, soul, beat-boxing, body percussion, rap and folk music. The first part containing canons and two-, three- and four-part arrangements, and the second part is intended for individual singing. The songs are inspired by four continents and eight different languages are represented. The degree of difficulty on them varies greatly and ranges from very simple to fairly advanced. Sometimes a simple song might still be a challenge for an advanced student depending on what one chooses to focus on. Some of the ensemble songs can also be used in solo singing and then the teacher can sing one of the other parts and also, in the same way, the solo songs can serve as unison ensemble songs. Every song has an associated instruction with suggestions on what one can work with. Most songs are with accompaniment, while some are intended to be performed A cappella. To make it easier for the teacher, the songs are also listed in all keys that may be suitable for each song. The songs in this book can be used for countless purposes. They can be seen as a bridge between more traditional singing exercises - often in the forms of scales and triads - and the repertoire at hand. They can serve as a song to "tune in" a particular genre and, thereby, also develop the singers´ genre breadth. Furthermore, the songs can also be a way of “getting started” where a quick warm-up is needed, as a gathering-song or as an “ensemble-tuning-in-together-song”. Some songs are intended to be performed with movements. The goal might then be to simply let go, work with a clear sense of pulse or gain a bodily awareness and sing with a clearer body anchorage. Moreover, they can also challenge the singer's simultaneous capacity and through the diversionary maneuver that the movement constitutes, get a freer and more fluid song.
