More specifically, it will, first, deal with the function of secrecy in relation to initiation and experiential knowledge. Secondly, it will cover the formalized application of secrecy as expressed through the rituals of initiation, with a particular focus on the development of the oaths and penalties). Finally, the chapter will discuss the use of secrecy as a polemical discourse against Freemasonry.
