Notes

  • What factors contribute to the uniqueness of small islands? Why do individuals opt to reside on smaller islands either permanently or part of the year? Limited research exists on Swedish islands, despite Sweden being among the countries boasting the highest number of islands globally. Hence, this study presents crucial findings pertaining to the difficulties encountered in sustaining a thriving community and enhancing the residents' quality of life on a small island located on Sweden's western coast. The primary focus underscores the necessity for coordinated endeavors and systematic strategies to tackle declining population trends and augment the value for both inhabitants and visitors of small islands. The study highlights the intricate relationship between urbanization in cities and the ensuing challenges, such as housing shortages, segregation, and environmental issues. Engaging 64 participants representing various groups, including year-round residents, part-time residents, tourists, and visitors, the study employed semi-structured interviews to facilitate a comprehensive exploration of participants' prominent concerns and unanticipated perspectives. The research identified four overarching thematic areas: housing, collaboration, cultural heritage development, and marketing/communication. Participants emphasized the significance of encouraging permanent residency to ensure the island's year-round viability. Preserving cultural heritage, fostering collaboration, and promoting sustainable development necessitate active engagement and organization among residents. Results show that islanders often carry responsibilities otherwise led by governmental or regional stakeholders. The findings underscore the imperative for strategic interventions, continued collaboration, and a community-centered approach to address the challenges confronting the island, while fostering its long-term vitality and resilience.Consequently, this investigation furnishes valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of small islands.
