Notes

  • On the basis of material from the CobuildDirect corpus it is demonstrated that native speakers of English often use "unorthodox" singular concord in sentences with existential there plus the catenative verb seem plus a plural notional subject. A closing comment deals with pedagogical implications for the teaching of English.
