• The Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez is frequently recognized as ‘the father of liberation theology’. The epithet has been given to him since he is believed to have coined the name ‘Theology of Liberation’ and to have been the first to discuss the relationship between salvation and human liberation. Supposedly he did both these things in a talk he gave in the Peruvian city of Chimbote in July 1968. The empirical material shows, however, that others preceded Gutiérrez both with the name and the central ideas of liberation theology. Thus, the notion of Gutiérrez as the first liberation theologian does not represent a historical fact. In the article it is argued that several simultaneous and concurrent forces within the religious field made Gutiérrez the father of liberation theology.
