Populism invokes the authority of the people against an élite. Often that entails a rejection of the authority of experts and their criteria for a valid discourse. This tension surfaces in conflicts around conspiracy theories and here is suggested that this tension is seen as a conflict between two interpretations of reality, of particular phenomena or history. The question is what role the philosophical hermeneutics articulated by Paul Ricœur can play when reflecting on the formation of history, narration, documents and archives. Crucial factors are the historian and what is legitimately included in a story.
Abstract in FrenchLe populisme invoque l’autorité du peuple contre une élite. Souvent, cela implique un rejet de l’autorité des experts et de leurs critères de validité du discours. Cette tension apparaît dans les conflits autour des théories de la conspiration. Est suggéré que cette tension soit considérée comme un conflit entre deux interprétations de la réalité, de phénomènes particuliers ou de l’histoire. La question est de savoir quel rôle peut jouer l’herméneutique philosophique articulée par Paul Ricœur lorsqu’il parle de la formation de l’histoire, de la narration, des documents et des archives. Les facteurs cruciaux sont l’historien et ce qui est légitimement inclus dans une histoire.
