Photochemistry

• Photochemistry refers to the processes by which energy istransferred from electromagnetic radiation (in practicemainly ultraviolet and visible light) into chemical activityin gases, solid particles, and living matter. Photochemicalprocesses partly control the initial conditions for the formationof stars and planets, they may leave traces of theearly chemical evolution of planetary systems in the abundancesof isotopes, they regulate the input of stellar energyinto atmospheres of planets, and they play important rolesin the chemistry of living organisms on Earth.
