    • BackgroundTo manage injuries effectively, players, head coaches, and medical personnel need to have excellent knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to the identification of risk factors for injuries, the implementation of injury prevention initiatives, as well as the implementation of effective injury management strategies. Understanding the injury context, whereby specific personal, environmental, and societal factors can influence the implementation of injury prevention initiatives and injury management strategies is critical to player welfare. To date, no qualitative research investigating the context of injuries, has been undertaken in elite-level womens football. The aim of our study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of players, head coaches, and medical personnel in the Irish Womens National League (WNL) to injury prevention and injury management.MethodsWe used qualitative research methods to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of players, head coaches, and medical personnel in the Irish WNL to injury prevention and injury management. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 17 players, 8 medical personnel, and 7 head coaches in the Irish WNL. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Our study is located within an interpretivist, constructivist research paradigm.ResultsThe participants had incomplete knowledge of common injuries in elite-level football, and many held beliefs about risk factors for injuries, such as menstrual cycle stage, which lacked evidence to support them. Jumping and landing exercises were commonly used to reduce the risk of injuries but evidence-based injury prevention exercises and programmes such as the Nordic hamstring curl, Copenhagen adduction exercise, and the FIFA 11+ were rarely mentioned. Overall, there was dissatisfaction amongst players with their medical care and strength and conditioning (S & C) support, with resultant inadequate communication between players, head coaches, and medical personnel.ConclusionPoor quality and availability of medical care and S & C support were considered to be a major obstacle in the effective implementation of injury risk reduction strategies and successful return-to-sport practices. More original research is required in elite-level womens football to explore injury risk factors, injury prevention initiatives, and contextual return-to-sport strategies, so that players, head coaches, and medical personnel can use evidence that is both up-to-date and specific to their environment.

  • Coronary Flow in Neonates with Impaired Intrauterine Growth.

    • BACKGROUND: Subclinical myocardial injury has been reported in newborns with fetal weights < 2 SDs for gestational age. Intrauterine growth restriction might affect cardiac function and coronary flow (CF). METHODS: Seventeen newborns with intrauterine growth restriction and 15 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Blood flow in the umbilical artery and maternal uterine artery was assessed using Doppler velocimetry. Cardiac function and left anterior descending coronary artery CF were measured using transthoracic Doppler echocardiography at 1 week of age. RESULTS: The mean growth deviation of the newborns from normal was -2.5 ± 0.2 SDs. Percentage left ventricular shortening fraction was 39 ± 4.3% in patients and 42 ± 4.1% in controls (P = .40), and the mean left ventricular mass index was 86.6 g/m(2) in patients and 73.7 g/m(2) in controls (P < .01). The mean left anterior descending coronary artery diameter was 0.99 ± 0.1 mm in patients and 0.8 ± 0.1 mm in controls (P = .002). The left anterior descending coronary artery flow velocity-time integral was correlated with left ventricular mass index (r = 0.31, P = .007) and with mitral peak E/A ratio (r = 0.74, P = .01). Intrauterine growth restriction was associated with increased peak flow velocity in diastole (34.5 ± 4 vs 19 ± 6 cm/sec in controls, P = .0001), as well as increased CF (37 ± 7.3 vs 8.2 ± 3.0 mL/min in controls, P = .001). CONCLUSIONS: CF is significantly increased in neonates with impaired intrauterine growth. Left ventricular mass index is increased, but systolic and diastolic function remains normal. The clinical significance of increased CF is unclear, but it might lead to decreased CF reserve.

    • The divertor solutions obtained with the plasma edge modelling tool SOLPS5.0 are discussed. The code results are benchmarked against carefully analysed L-mode discharges at various density levels with and without impurity seeding in the full-metal tokamaks ASDEX Upgrade and JET. The role of the cross-field drifts and currents in the solutions is analysed in detail, and the improvements achieved by fully activating the drift and current terms in view of matching the experimental signals are addressed. The persisting discrepancies are also discussed.

    • In this paper, we consider the div-curl problem posed on nonconvex polyhedral domains. We propose a least-squares method based on discontinuous elements with normal and tangential continuity across interior faces, as well as boundary conditions, weakly enforced through a properly designed least-squares functional. Discontinuous elements make it possible to take advantage of regularity of given data (divergence and curl of the solution) and obtain convergence also on nonconvex domains. In general, this is not possible in the least-squares method with standard continuous elements. We show that our method is stable, derive a priori error estimates, and present numerical examples illustrating the method. © Springer-Verlag 2005.

  • The edges of galaxies : Tracing the limits of star formation

    • The outskirts of galaxies have been studied from multiple perspectives for the past few decades. However, it is still unknown if all galaxies have clear-cut edges similar to everyday objects. We address this question by developing physically motivated criteria to define the edges of galaxies. Based on the gas density threshold required for star formation, we define the edge of a galaxy as the outermost radial location associated with a significant drop in either past or ongoing in situ star formation. We explore ∼1000 low-inclination galaxies with a wide range in morphology (dwarfs to ellipticals) and stellar mass (107 M⊙ < M⋆ < 1012 M⊙). The location of the edges of these galaxies (Redge) were visually identified as the outermost cutoff or truncation in their radial profiles using deep multi-band optical imaging from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project. We find this characteristic feature at the following mean stellar mass density, which varies with galaxy morphology: 2.9 ± 0.10 M⊙ pc−2 for ellipticals, 1.1 ± 0.04 M⊙ pc−2 for spirals, and 0.6 ± 0.03 M⊙ pc−2 for present-day star-forming dwarfs. Additionally, we find that Redge depends on its age (colour) where bluer galaxies have larger Redge at a fixed stellar mass. The resulting stellar mass–size plane using Redge as a physically motivated galaxy size measure has a very narrow intrinsic scatter (≲0.06 dex). These results highlight the importance of new deep imaging surveys to explore the growth of galaxies and trace the limits of star formation in their outskirts.
