Detection of lubrication failures in wire drawing

• Lack of lubricant or rough surface conditions results in metal-to-metal contact between the wire and the die. This affects wear of the die and may cause tearing. Efforts to detect tearing by measuring changes in the wire temperature, drawing force or motor power have had little or no success because the changes are relatively small. This article describes the principle and design of an instrument for detection of tearing and lubrication failures
