  • Partial wh-movement in the history of Scandinavian
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Partial wh-movement does not exist in the modern Scandinavian languages. It is however found in Old West Scandinavian texts, but not in Old East Scandinavian texts. In this article it is argued that there is a correspondence between attested partial wh-movement and the possibility of deleting the complementizer corresponding to English that. Although complementizer deletion is possible in all modern Scandinavian languages only Old East Scandinavian seemed to allow this.

  • Presentational sentences in Icelandic and Swedish: Roles and positions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Working Papers in Scandinavian Syntax. - 1100-097X. ; 101, s. 1-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article we report on a systematic comparison of presentational sentences in Icelandic and Swedish, looking in particular at possible thematic roles of the pivot and how they correlate with positional options. Despite some well-known differences between the languages (only Icelandic allows ‘high’ IP-pivots and pivots with transitive verbs), it turns out that the restrictions on VP-pivots are similar, both in terms of roles and positions. VP-pivots have to be Themes and may co-occur with other DPs, but only if the pivot is the last DP argument. We show how these restrictions to some extent reflect the argument structure proposed in Platzack (2010). In addition we show that we need to distinguish presentational sentences among the different Transitive Expletive Constructions discussed in Håkansson (2017).

  • Scandinavian relative clause extractions - Apparent restrictions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Working Papers in Scandinavian Syntax. - 1100-097X. ; 94, s. 36-50
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This brief article investigates the restrictions on Mainland Scandinavian relative clause extraction that have figured in the literature on island constraints. The conclusion is that none of these restrictions can be regarded as constraints on relative clause extraction per se and therefore that the peripheral status standardly assigned to Mainland Scandinavian relative clause extraction cannot be maintained.

  • Is V2 really that hard to acquire for second language learners? On current universalist L2 claims and their empirical underpinnings.
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper investigates the nonnative acquisition of German verb placement on the basis of new, quantified, empirical data from Swedish post-puberty learners. Contrary to existing claims in the literature on the acquisition of V2 languages (here, German), there is no evidence for a universal developmental sequence for verb placement. Rather, non-subject-initial V2 transfers from the L1 grammar (here, Swedish), whether or not there is an intervening non-V2 L2 (here, English). Secondly, and again contrary to claims in the literature, the nonnative acquisition of V2 is not developmentally dependent on target headedness of the VP (here, German OV) being acquisitionally prior. Thirdly, in L3 acquisition, there is – or can be – transfer of properties of both L1 syntax (here, V2, VO, from Swedish) and L2 syntax (here, XSV-V3, from English) to L3 German.

  • On Aristotle and Baldness : Topic, Reference, Presupposition of Existence, and Negation
  • 2006
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is a contribution to the never settled debate on reference, negation and presupposition of existence in the linguistic/philosophical literature. Based on Swedish and English data, the discussion is an attempt to present a unified account of the opposing views put forward in the works of Aristotle, Frege (1892), Russell (1905) and Strawson (1950). The starting point is the observed asymmetry in Swedish (and English) that negation may precede a quantified subject NP in the first position, but not a definite subject NP or a proper name. This asymmetry is argued to be due to semantic, rather than syntactic, restrictions. In the model proposed here, negating a topic NP affects the “topic selection”. This is allowed with quantified NPs, since negating a quantifier leads only to a modification of the topic selection. For definite/generic subject NPs this cannot be allowed, since negating a definite NP equals cancelling the topic selection. This leads to a ‘crash’ at the semantic level.

  • On the Structure of Subordinate Clauses in Swedish
  • 2008
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel observation on Swedish subordinate clause structure. I show that in embedded V2 clauses, negation may only precede quantified subjects in the position following the complementizer; this is the very same limitation as found in the first position of main clauses. This correlation I take to provide a strong argument for assuming V-to-C movement in embedded V2 clauses. This claim is of course not new in itself, but my approach to V-to-C movement is. Thus I argue that by focusing on the position immediately to the right of the complementizer, we are offered a new tool for distinguishing the structural properties of different subordinate clause types in Swedish.

  • Subject Omission and Discourse Anchorage in Early Swedish Child Language
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper addresses the question whether a connection exists between subject omission and discourse anchorage in early Swedish child language. By analysing data from three Swedish children, I investigate whether previous mentioning in the discourse affects the occurrence of subject omission. A Danish study by Hamann & Plunkett (1998) reported that no connection between subject omissions and discourse anchorage could be established for Danish. My study partly contradicts their results: in finite utterances, the majority of the omissions found were anchored to the discourse. Furthermore, the results indicate that the development of a Theory of Mind might be of importance for the decrease of subject omission in child language.
