  • Review of "Las Vegas in Singapore: Violence, progress and the crisis of nationalist modernity", by Lee Kah-Wee. Singapore: NUS Press, 2019.
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. - 0022-4634 .- 1474-0680. ; 52:4, s. 779-780
  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This book is essentially a collection of texts about gambling in Singapore and in Las Vegas. The texts are presented as being unified mainly by the theme of the architectural and spatial dimensions of gambling, as well as by the notion of the ‘taming of vice’. Other overarching concepts are ‘moral laundering’ and, in regard to Singapore, ‘progress without crisis’ and ‘nationalist modernity’. ... Despite its quirks and shortcomings, the book is a welcome addition to the rather few texts — compared with all that has been written on the psychology of excessive gambling — that explore how gambling is embedded in historical, ideological and economic contexts.

  • “The Whole Moon was Eaten”: Southeast Asian Eclipse Calculation
  • 1998
  • In: Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. - 0022-4634. ; 29:2, s. 309-318
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One might classify earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as “natural disasters”, whereas comets and eclipses might be described merely as “natural curiosities”. In earlier times, however, all were equally frightening, signs that the gods were angry.A form of protection against eclipses was available, however, in the sense that prediction provided a means of countering the event. Consequently one main function of the astronomer/astrologer (henceforth “hora”) in his society was to warn his patron that the sky would darken and the birds stop singing at such and such a time on such and such a day.

  • The killing of Posthouder Scheerder and Jifar Folfolun (The War of the Breasts) : Malukan and Dutch narratives of an incident in the VOC's waning days
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-4634 .- 1474-0680. ; 50:3, s. 324-346
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Aru Islands in southeastern Maluku have a long history of economic exchange and colonial relations with the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and later the Dutch colonial state. Aru was fragmented in smaller autonomous settlements, of which those in the east produced valuable items for export, such as pearls and tripang (edible sea cucumber). The article focuses on a spate of anti-colonial revolts in the waning days of the VOC in the 1790s. It centred on the Batuley villages situated on a few small islands on the eastern side. The central incident leading to the resistance was the killing of a Dutch low-ranking officer, Scheerder, an event which has been preserved in local tradition till the present day. A search in the VOC archives confirms several details, but suggests a rationale for the resistance which is partly different from the traditional version, and linked in with larger movements of resistance in Aru and Maluku. The article discusses the significance of the oral traditions, and how a comparison with archival materials can enrich our understanding of Arunese-Dutch relations.

  • Peace pacts and contentious politics: The Chico River Dam struggle in the Philippines, 1974–82
  • 2022
  • In: Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0022-4634 .- 1474-0680. ; 53:4, s. 641-663
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the 1970s, communities of the Kalinga sub-ethnic group in the Cordillera Mountains in northern Philippines successfully halted the construction of a series of hydroelectric dams along their main waterway, the Chico River, which would have caused their displacement. Based on interviews and archival research, the article examines the role played by a Kalinga political institution known as the bodong or peace pact in the Kalingas’ mobilisation against the dam project, using an analytical framework drawn from Charles Tilly's and Sidney Tarrow's work on contentious politics.
