  • Mental health and exercise habits among police students in Sweden : A three-year retrospective study
  • 2023
  • In: The Police Journal. - : Sage Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study aims to explore police students’ self-rated mental health and physical activity levels and the relationship between them. Based on longitudinal and cross-sectional data (N = 722), two scales on mental health orientation were developed. The scales and levels of physical activity were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and X2. During police education, (1) the level of physical activity decreases for men, (2) there is a decline in positive health orientation for both sexes, and (3) women report a more negative health orientation. This raises questions regarding whether “enough” is done to provide police students with sufficient conditions for improving their health.

  • A retrospective study of physical fitness and mental health among police students in Sweden
  • 2023
  • In: The Police Journal. - : Sage Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 96:3, s. 430-450
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Little is known about the physical and mental health among police students. Based on data on Swedish police students’ physical fitness (N = 1736) and mental health (N = 407), the results show that: (a) there are gender differences; (b) the physical fitness changes during police education; in general, the students get stronger but less flexible, and the aerobic endurance increases for women but decreases for men; and (c) students’ self-reported physical activity and mental health affect their perceived police ability differently in re- lation to gender. Consequently, this study questions if the Swedish police education is preparing the students adequately for their future profession.

  • Police Cycle-Patrols in Finland: A Qualitative Study Applying the Diamond Model
  • 2008
  • In: The Police Journal. - : Sage Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 81, s. 323-335
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article describes a study in Finland of self-assessed risks and safety of policemen and women patrolling on bicycles. The study included focus-group interviews with police officers about their activities and ways of improving their situation. The interviews were structured into five different solution areas according to the Diamond Model: cycle-patrol officer, police bicycle, infrastructure, society/structure and communication. The study also included a questionnaire about police cycling activities in Helsinki, and active cycle-patrol officers' responses were analysed. The purpose of this study was to look at how police activities in Helsinki can be advanced and, in particular, how cycle-patrol members perceive their own safety, visibility and calming effect on other road users. It was also intended to study demands on the bicycle and other equipment used.

  • Using police bicycle patrols to manage social order in bicycle and pedestrian traffic networks : a Swedish case study
  • 2016
  • In: The Police Journal. - : Sage Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 89:1, s. 18-30
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article examines how bicycle police units perceive their impact on social norms of rule compliance and risk behaviours in bicycle and pedestrian traffic networks. Using qualitative methods, a police bicycle patrol was analysed. Findings indicate that bicycle patrols are promising as an innovative measure to target bicycle and pedestrian traffic enforcement. Police reported that the bicycle patrol allowed increased accessibility and that police presence on bicycles had a positive normative impact on the behaviours of bike riders and pedestrians. The discussion encompasses the way in which bicycle patrol units hold important tacit knowledge of street life that could play a key role in policy making.

  • The ‘blue leviathan’ : Perceptions of youth on police violence and impunity in Argentina
  • 2016
  • In: The Police Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 90:4, s. 318-347
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • There have been complaints against the Argentinian police for decades (CELS, 2013, 2015). The Argentinian police (either federal, national, prefectural or military) have been characterised as the ‘blue leviathan’ (Saín, 2008), being responsible for gross human rights violations and excessive violence committed against civilians. The present article focuses on youth, aiming to explore their perceptions regarding police violence and impunity based on past negative experiences in one of the most affected areas in the metropolitan region of Buenos Aires, the Mitre neighbourhood. The quantitative data gathered for this study furthers the discussion on institutional legitimacy and the mutual relationship between the development of confidence, obedience in law and procedural justice, in Argentina and beyond.

  • The quality of question types in Swedish police interviews with young suspects of serious crimes
  • 2019
  • In: The Police Journal. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 92:2, s. 136-149
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study explores how juvenile offenders in Sweden between the age of 15 and 17 are interviewed by police officers when suspected of homicide crimes. The quality of question types was assessed in 47 authentic interviews. The findings show that the police officers used option-posing and suggestive questions most frequently and social pressure was used in three predominating ways: to confront, to challenge and to appeal for a confession. The conclusion is that the police officers’ question style to a large extent contradicts recommendations for how to interview children. There is therefore a need to develop an evidence-based interview practice for interviewing young suspects.
