  • Fighting for the (Step)motherland? Predictors of Defense Willingness in Estonia’s Post-Soviet Generation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political & Military Sociology. - : University of Florida. - 0047-2697 .- 2642-2190. ; 49:2, s. 146-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What makes individuals willing to defend their (adopted) homeland as their own? This is an essential question for all diverse societies. We turn to the case of Estonia, which inherited a sizable Russian-speaking population after the fall of the Soviet Union. Using recent polling data, we test demographic and attitudinal predictors of defense willingness among the first generation of males that have been raised in the republic since the restoration of independence. The results enable us to unpack differences between Estonian-speakers and Russian-speakers, as well as disagreements among the latter, which shed light on the state of social cohesion in Estonia’s national fabric.

  • Trust and Fraud. : Occupation and Resistance in Norway, 1940-1945
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political & Military Sociology. - 0047-2697 .- 2642-2190. ; 27:1, s. 290-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution foicuses on a neglected problem in the current sociology of trust, namely actors' calculated attempts to gain the advantages of trust through fraudulent means. The purpose is to illustrate the potentials and limitations of such tactical trust investments by studying the ways in which secret agents attempted to infiltrate the resistance movement during the German occupation of Norway (1940 - 1945). Drawing on the archives of the Norwegian resistance movement, this study shows how infiltrators, using dramaturgical methods alone, could gain access to the trust of others. This was accomplished by copying typical traits present in everyday relations of trust; that is, first, the tendency to put trust in the trust of others, and, sencond, the gradual test of the reliability of actors. It is suggested that the study of tactical investments in trust under risk conditions is of sociological interest, since the otherwise often elusive, gamelike aspects of mutual strategic action are made visable.

  • "The Swedish Principle is the Christian Principle" : Christianity and the Concept of the People in Swedish Patriotism during World War II
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political & Military Sociology. - : University Press of Florida. - 0047-2697 .- 2642-2190. ; 49:2, s. 219-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To strengthen Swedish patriotism during World War II, representatives of the Swedish Parliament and the Church of Sweden gathered at Stockholm’s City Hall and issued the motto “The Swedish principle is the Christian principle.” This study analyzes the role of Christianity in Swedish patriotism as expressed at that meeting. Using Viroli’s theories of nationalism and patriotism, this unifying message is found to contain a variety of understandings regarding the relationships between the Swedish people, Christianity, and the Church of Sweden. Christian faith was presented as part of both nationalism and patriotism and as both an instrument for increasing national loyalty and an objective in itself.
