    • The purpose of this article is to study how Swedish adults conceptualize the relationship between their name and identity and how their views relate to scientific theories. It also discusses to what extent the relation between name and identity changes throughout life and which social factors may influence this. The data consists of 173 written survey answers, including both highly structured answers and freely written comments. Perspectives from folk onomastics, sociocultural identity theory and psychological theories life span identity are combined in the analysis. Results indicate that most people do not experience that their name reveals anything about their identity, however a third of the participants do see such a relation. This is often conceptualized as a process and includes both personal and social identity traits. A third of the participants further perceive that this relationship has changes throughout life and basing on these results the article suggests a tentative model of the life development of name identity through certain phases.

    • People and culture can move across borders bringing personal names across traditional linguistic boundaries. This process has changed and enriched the use of personal names throughout history – and continues to do so in our time. However, names can also lead to name based ethnic discrimination. This article discusses ethnic connotations to first names in Sweden that were originally imported from other languages, some quite recently, others centuries ago. A survey was conducted to investigate factors that potentially influence people’s ethnic connotations to first names: a) structural properties deviating from the main Swedish norm, b) how frequently the name occurs in Sweden, and c) how long the name has been established in Sweden. Furthermore, the article uses the results to discuss and problematize the concept of “marked” and “unmarked” names. © Respektive författare 2023

    • Toponyms and identity processes. Discussions on some Saami toponyms in Västerbotten, northern Sweden. The implementation of the Swedish minority policy has implied that the national minority languages spoken in an area have come to be visualised more than before. This exposure signals the value of the minority languages. The commission to the Swedish Transport Administration (‘Trafikverket’) implies strengthening the work with displaying toponyms in minority languages, since the toponyms are regarded as a valuable part of the cultural heritage. But what minority language toponyms should be put on the road signs parallel with the Swedish names? And what reactions could a toponym in a minority language cause? In an ongoing research project at Umeå University, ‘Naming and Narrating Places: Empowering Saami Traditions and Identities through Popular Place-Making Processes,’ the work with strengthening the use of the Saami toponyms and the reactions that this work cause is analysed. In this article is focused on three toponyms: Ubmeje (for Umeå), Likssjuo/Liksjoe (for Lycksele) and Birjevahne/Döörte/Kraapohke (for Dorotea). These examples illustrate complicated questions that arise in the work with the toponyms in the minority languages and the identity processes associated with them.

    • The significance of nicknames in the making and performance of identity: The examples youth and gender identityThis article analyses the nickname’s significance for the construction of identity. The issues I specifically discuss are as follows: 1) How does the nickname contribute in the construction of identity? 2) How is youth and gender identity constructed through nicknames? My approach to identity is based on a constructivist perspective where the starting-point is that the identity is originally individual but also perceived as collective in a group constructing process where nicknames can be used to announce inclusion or exclusion of the group. In the analysis, I am using 198 nicknames that are collected through interviews and questionnaires. Name-bearers usually get their nicknames when they are children or adolescents. A gender perspective on the issue shows that it is more common for women to get nicknames at the age of 0–5 years, while men get, to a greater extent, their nicknames at the age of 11–15 years. However, it is more common that men’s nicknames contain different features which reinforce traditional gender roles. The conclusion is that the nickname can be an important linguistic resource for constructing identity.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this article is, based on previous Nordic name research, to provide a proposal for defining the name category that include product names more than before. In this context, the entire naming practice, that includes the naming process, the emergence of names, the monoreferentiality, the adjacent to appellative and text, the name formation, and the name choice, as well as the function of the product name group, is highlighted. To conclude, it can be stated that the similarities between product names and other more prototypical names are predominant. The differences that occur, depend upon the situation and the name users’ individual choices. Finally, I argue that product names are part of the name category - on their own terms.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Choosing a name for a child is part of the process of becoming a parent and is done with care and after careful consideration. For those who become parents through adoption, the question arises of how to deal with the fact that the child already has one or several names. Should the names be kept or changed or added on to? This article focus on how both adult international adoptees and adoptive parents assign meanings to names and naming, and how they discuss naming in relation to identity. There are differences as well as similarities between the informants, both in terms of attitudes and experiences. A life-historical perspective reveals that what may appear to be important during one period in life seems less so in another, and vice versa. As a person's identity changes throughout life, her interpretation and understanding of her own name may also alter.
