  • Special Issue: Intersections and Transformations in Medical Humanities : Defining and Conceptualising New Paths
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 52:2, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue of Ethnologia Europaea explores new paths for our scientific disciplines within the expanding field of medical humanities. Medical humanities have seen a significant expansion in recent years, creating new research foci and leading to collaborations both within and outside of the humanities. As it is a growing academic field, we argue that it is necessary to be part of the medical humanities in defining and conceptualising new paths. The contributions to this special issue demonstrate the ways in which disciplines like European ethnology, folklore studies, social and cultural anthropology can contribute to the expansion, drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork from Croatia, Estonia, Slovenia and Sweden. This special issue opens a space for more collaboration within our fields, as well as with medicine.

  • Doing-it-yourself : autoethnography of manual work
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - Copenhagen : Tusculanum. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 41:1, s. 53-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autoethnography is a method for cultural research where you are using your own experiences, as a starting point or as examples of more general conditions. You are both the subject and the object of observation. Recently I tried this method in a Do-It-Yourself project, writing field-notes while working as a home fixer with hammer, screw driver and other tools. I found it to be rather tricky to describe manual work with regard to both body and mind. I also reflected on some differences and similarities between writing and DIY. The purpose of self-narrative experiments like this is to improve fieldwork and cultural analysis. By practicing autoethnography you may learn more about the research process and become more conscious of what is going on when you are doing observations and interpreting them.

  • Performing a Present from the Past : The Värmland Heritage Gift, Materialized Emotions and Cultural Connectivity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Berghahn Books. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 40:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on actor-network theory and theories of performance, this article discusses gift-giving as an expansive form of materializing relationships and delimiting boundaries between nations, regions, organizations and individuals in the wake of migration. Initially, I discuss gift-giving as a way of materializing relationships and building networks. Thereafter, I map out the social life of the Värmland Gift to America, a collection donated by the Värmland province in Sweden to the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis in 1952. I suggest the coinage of heritage gift as a term to describe gifts with dense biographies which contain and enact multiple performances that simultaneously create and recreate the idea of gift-giving in its role as an activity that binds people together. The analysis of the Värmland Gift shows how such a heritage gift kept on the move over time involves not one but a series of performances which have fostered dynamic transatlantic relationships for over fifty years.

  • Sense of Community: Trust, Hope and Worries in the Welfare State
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 39, s. 7-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Community-studies have a long tradition within European Ethnology. Almost without exception they have been neglecting the strong presence of public institutions of the welfare state – despite the fact that various social security and insurance systems are such an important factor in local life. These are the offices people turn to when they are ill, require unemployment benefits, social assistance, and early retirement or disability pensions. They often provide the foundations for people to make a go of things where they live. Local communities on the other hand are not passively receiving support, but in a most intricate practice defining the actual outcome of the workings of the institutions. In this essay remuneration for illness in contemporary Sweden is used as an instrument for putting local culture in a new light. In a joint effort the macro-perspectives of political science is combined with the detailed cultural analysis of ethnology. 1 Especially the emotional aspects of community-building are brought out.

  • Camouflage
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of the Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 35:1, s. 136-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To camouflage is to adapt in a situation. The word is used in different ways with many connotations and synonyms, as in disguise, mask, hide, conceal, obscure, cover-up and create a façade or smoke-screen. What the words have in common is that they point out how something can give protection from recognition. Camouflage is therefore a good word to use in studying how the individual being can mask and hide differences, stigmas, or abnormalities. Before translating the concept into specific cultural practices, it may be worth noting that it has been developed in two very separate fields: biology and warfare.

  • Controlling Bacteria in a Post-antibiotic Era : Popular Ideas about Bacteria, Antibiotics, and the Immune System
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 52:2, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses people’s experiences with bacteria and the human body and examines the cultural meanings regarding concerns that society likely is running out of effective antibiotics. The empirical material comes from Sweden, and our analysis is framed through perspectives from the medical humanities. The interdisciplinary goal is to better understand the societal challenges of antibiotic resistance in the advent of a so-called post-antibiotic era. The study presents results from the “If antibiotics stop working” questionnaire which was distributed with the help of The Folklife Archives with the Scania Music Collections at Lund University. We argue that the concept of a post-antibiotic era can open a more imaginary way of thinking about what future relationships are possible if antibiotics were to lose their curative power.

  • “I was born here” : Positioning by Origin and Citizenship in a Conversation between a Collector and a Roma Family in the early 1950s, Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of the Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 51:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines an audio recording with a Roma family made by the collector Arvid Andersson in Sweden, in the early 1950s. The aim of this article is to unfold this jointly constructed conversation between the collector and the Roma family members. The analysis of the conversation shows a delicate interplay between the Roma family and the interviewer, and we especially stress the agency of the family in the process of negotiating belonging, challenging a discourse about the Roma as a passive group merely subjected to discrimination and stereotyping. The foreignness of the Roma was continuously stressed, while the Roma opposed being positioned as foreigners and tried to clarify that they did belong in Sweden and contributed to society.

  • Promoting Environmental Awareness. : On Emotions, Story-Telling, and Banal Sustainability in a Staged Rainforest
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Open Library of the Humanities. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 49:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the promotion of environmental awareness in a staged rainforest at a science centre in Sweden. The organizers worked with the agenda to change people’s everyday behaviour and consumer routines and especially targeted the use of palm oil. This mundane way of approaching environmental issues is defined by the author as banal sustainability. The exhibited forest was employed for guided walks, stressing the domestication of the environmental challenges into issues of people’s everyday life practices. The promotion of an awareness rested on the bodily experience of moving in the staged rainforest, emphazising astonishment, adventure, and empathy. It worked as an attachment site, connecting insight to action. As such, it was practice-oriented, simplifying, and empowering.
